This was the question of my Educ 44 professor last meeting. Isn't it difficult? I am sure my friends here in MYLOT will be able to help me answer this MIND-BOGGLING and TRICKY question of hers. Thanks in advance for those who will share some thoughts. I will then POST my professor's answer on friday after my class with her. GOD BLESS US ALL!

This is how I see it. If you are a learned person, then you took the time to learn something on your own or as you go. An educated person is just that. They had a formal education, went through the formalities of getting a good education, paid the dues if you may. Learned is more like a self taught. Educated is when someone teaches you.

What an interesting discussion. Well, there is no "Real" difference but there is indeed a difference. The difference is that a learned person learned naturally and through experience whilst an educated person learned from another person, subject, book, etc.

Wow, tricky indeed...I wold say learned person are those who were trained and who were exposed in a particular study, training and course and absorb those theories and learn and understand things in relations to what they are studying and when we say educated, they are the one who knows how to apply theories in real life, they can be illiterate or with poor education but they have skills and they understand how to use this skills in actual life! LOL! I am interested to know your professor's answer about this!

Educated person has a school degree while a learned person has the life experience to back up that knowledge. In other words, a learned person doesn't just have generic book learning. The person owns the information because they've earned it through hard experience.

There is no significant difference; both terms have the same meaning but have simply used seperate words. A "learned" person is someone who has been taught many things and knows a lot of information. An "educated" person is not different - they have gathered an education and have the smarts. The "learned person" term is simply an older term than an "educated person," and some people may argue that it is not proper English, which is no true. So basically, they have no major difference. They are the same meaning hidden in two different terms.

That is what I am thinking at first... but according to my professor there is a great difference between them and not just their spelling.

well education is what we learn at institutes through teachers and professor and we study....after we are educated the learning process starts that is when we start applying our education and the experiences that we face make us learned...even our grandparents are more learned about the various aspects of life bcoz they have more varied experience..being learned is not only by the book more about evolving and experiencing..have a nice day..

I would have to say that a learned person is one who has all the facts but an educated person is one who has the lice experience to back it all up.

this is my thoughts and that alone. I believe when you are learned, the learning can come an informal gathering as well as in an academic gathering. You may take it upon yourself to learn something, which is how you have a lot of folks who can give you some expertise in certain areas; That is a learned person. you may also call this person a self-taught person if you will that is fine. An educated person is one who has the formal schooling and the certifications, degrees and what not to back him up behind it. They can be learned as well, but it depends, and that is where you get someone who has common sense, vs perhaps someone who doesn't. very interesting question. I was about to tackle this the other day, and I got the presence of mind to wait right then and there. I feel that I waited for a better, yet thought out answer. I hope this helps you and I sure plan to read the other's responses as well.

i think a learned person is someone who has learned things through living there life like life lessons through mistakes in life and things of this sort. i think and educated person is someone who has been too college or university and gotten a degree in a field as in doctor lawyer nurse whatever profession they wanted to be in education is the key too sucess in everything you want too do in life!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IN my opinion, a educated person is someone who got their knowledged mainly from books and by just reading and remembering.. As for learned person, they learn thru experience and it's because of failure, and they learn from practical situations and scenarios ^_^ I guess that's the difference ^_^

In my opinion, a "learned person" is one who has learned by trial and error, by living life, actual real life experiences, "street smarts" if you will. Been there done that kind of things. An "educated person" is just one that has read about it in books - usually not much actual experience. IF it says so in the book that is how it is and if it doesn't say so in a book - then it isn't.

No, just common sense to me. Same thing with book smarts and streets smarts. Live and learn is quite often better than anything a book can tell you cause that is all it does - tells you. Life teaches you.

Not knowing the larger context in which this question was asked makes it harder to guess what your professor was wanting you to think about. I agree some with other responders. An educated person is someone who has been formally taught. A learned person is someone who has learned - implies self-taught and experienced. I would go so far as to say that a learned person may be wiser and have more practical knowledge and skills than many educated persons. Have you ever met a doctor who seemed to know very little outside his/her specialty? Some people are smart enough to achieve academic success and get a degree or maybe two, but are not wise and savvy enough to keep learning and updating their knowledge on their own once they are out of school.

A learned person is one who was able to acquire knowledge collectively through studies, personal experience, self-studies and other possible sources. Educated is a person who gets to attend and finish a college degree or even up to doctorate degree in a university. Education is just one way of learning but a person who did not get education can still be learned through other possible means like self-study, and from his own experience from home, from friends, from people around and from happenings as well. Education stops at one point but learning is a continuous process.

I think a learned person is a person who has a lot of school knowledge and is smart that way. An educated person is someone who has school knowledge and life knowledge and knows how to use that for his advantage. Just my idea. Have a nice day

An educated person is one who has been though all the schools and colleges and univerisities and is really book smart, but he or she may not always be too street smart. They know all the facts and figures but not always how to react to social situations or simple life problems. A learned person has both the educational advantages of school and college and university but has also learned how to live among other people and how to react to social situations. he is educated and street smart too.

I have a new college here. She was a graduate of computer science from a known computer school here. She knows a lot about computers. But if she have some problems regarding her work and her computer, she had no one to approach for help but me. She was EDUCATED with regards to computers. And here goes me. This is true, not just for the sake of this discussion. I graduated electronic technician from a state technical school. Never got computer lessons. I was given a chance to work a computer programmer, maintenance and encoder at the same time. Never got the chance to go back to school for this matter. So I got books and the system. And I LEARNED it and now I know it...

This is a very deep thought and I looked up the two words definitions and yes they are closely related. But after reading the actual definitions I see that a learned person is someone who is constantly learning and an educated person is someone who has already acquired an education, experience or skills. And obviously a person who is an educated person either was once or are still a learned person. Just an educated person has an education above the avergae person. I am sure if i think on this a little more in depth I could see other differences and similarities. Can't wait to see the professor's answer.

There are many ways to become educated, so in my opinion learned and educated are one, but I think that your tutor will say that the educated person has achieved some status of qualification and therefore has gained recognition through receipt of certificates, were'as a learned person has learned through either experience or their own research which they may not gain certificates for. The learned person may actually be more practical within the subject, but not less inexperienced.
