volunteering with children

I live in Ontario and am looking for some experience volunteering with children so that it will help my resume when looking for teaching jobs. I was wondering if anyone had a list of places that I could try to get some volunteer work with?

Things might be different in Canada than in the US, but volunteers are needed in so many places! What grade level(s) do you plan to teach? Public and private schools are desperate for volunteers, from preschool through university. Public libraries beg for volunteers to "teach" reading circles for the little ones or help create book clubs for older students, adults and seniors. Most religious organizations (churches, synagogues, etc.) have everything from daycare to religious classes, for which they need bot paid teachers and volunteers. Good luck. You're doing a very worthwhile thing!

I have never heard that libraries look for readers. I am going to look into that. Does it make it worthwhile having these sort of things on your resume when applying for teaching jobs? I want to volunteer in schools so that as I start applying for jobs that some of the principals may already know me and see that I am devoted to teaching.

I've seen many people go from volunteer to teacher. Anything you can put on your resume that someone else doesn't have puts you that much ahead. You're right about the importance of showing your commitment to the profession and to the kids!

I am glad that showing my profession will be great. I have been very involved with my religion and the children at my church so I am hoping that will help me as well. I hoping I can get a job right away becuase I need the money. I have lined up a tutoring part time job, but am going to need much more then that.

I would recommend contacting local schools, mentoring programs, afterschool programs, hospitals with a pediatrics ward, and a local abused/neglected child court advocacy program. These are all great ways to get involved with children who need you!
