I have disturbed the hornets' nest and have been stung all over.I am undersiege! I have started a discussion which has angered mylot members here. I have been bombarded for being a cruel, uncaring to cats. I have no intention to hurt people like pyewacket, momiecat, catsanddogs and The Catlady who have truly shown their real love for cats, they have even adopted cats in their names. Being a cat lover, I do not blame you for your frustrations on my dislike for stray cats. I accept the negative ratings you gave me on this discussion. I deserve this for not sharing your love for cats. I am not against animals. I do have cats and dogs as pets but I cannot accept stray animals lurking in my home as it creates trouble to my own beloved pets. I thank you for your deep concern for animals especially cats and would try to bent a bit to live and love cats. Your caring attitude towards these animals have taught me to be more open to the plight of stray cats. Let us smoke the peace pipe in Mylot!

No friends are willing to take these cats unless they are from a good breed.

Being that I'm part Native American I'm very more than willing to smoke the peace pipe....LOL If and of my words were harsh to you, I apologize. As I mentioned I've done my share of pet rescues and know a lot of pet rescuers, so when pet rescuers hears something like this situation we cringe. And yes, perhaps you're word of "starving" the cats was the wrong one for you to use, which is probably what got many of us so upset. I did a further search about pet shelters and organizations in Malaysia...don't know if any of these are near you...if not maybe you could at least call them and ask if there is anything closer to your area. Also please have serious talks with your daughter...as some others in your other discussion indicated, your daughter may be showing signs of "pet hoarder" tendencies...believe me I know about this condition as my own mother was a hoarder and collected pets as well which nearly got us evicted twice...I won't get into the long details of the story, but it was a nightmare to say the least and in this case was dealing with a lot more pets than you. In fact if you wish, you can read an article I wrote about all this here. http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/357371/living_with_a_pet_hoarder.html?cat=72 Here is the listing of shelters I found in Malaysia....hope something is near you. Hi zandi, I have to say that even I'm shocked at some of the comments that you received on the other discussion. I know a lot of these people and their usually kind hearted natures got displaced with a lot of unhelpful anger. I love cats very much, my cats have been like my children but I do not think you are a cruel person. If you were a cruel person you would have done something a lot more drastic than just not feeding strays so they'd go away. Unfortunately you used the word starve which is what I think set everyone off. Just an unfortunate choice of words that people misunderstood to mean you were trying to kill them all. I understand that you are in a very difficult situation right now. One that you did not create yourself. Because of where you live, you don't have the help resources that are available to animals in other countries. That is not your fault. You need help and advice right now not hateful comments. I for one would have a very long talk with your daughter and tell her this has to stop immediately. I don't know how old she is but it's gone way too far and she has to be made to understand that being kind to animals is a good and wonderful thing but destroying your home is another. For the ones that you already have I hope that you can find good homes for them. As I said I don't know how old your daughter is but if she is older perhaps she could put her kind heart to work for all the local stray cats. Take up a collection from the local townspeople and open her own cat shelter for strays and unwanted pets. If there are that many strays around then maybe more people are looking for a way to solve the problem. I wish you the best and hope you can solve your problem soon. I hope everyone who got involved here on MyLot can chalk this up to a big misunderstanding with no harm intended. Hugs :D

Exactly I have been misunderstood with the word 'starve'. It is too cruel a word which provoked anger with these people who are real cats lover. Properly worded I would not have landed myself in this controversy issue. my daughter is 12 years old. I have already warned her not to bring home abandoned cats.

A very good post, and my sentiments exactly. I do think it was the word starve that set everyone off. Honestly it bothered me as well. Zandi I think part of the problem too was that you mentioned the cats had been brought in, and you were not feeding them in your house. That is a difficult situation. It is a shame that you had so many harsh words, but it is a difficult subject. My best advice (since I understand your country doesn't help deal with strays) is to let them go outside to hunt their own meals. And not allow the strays inside to mingle with your own pets. Its not the best solution, but probably the only one you can handle in the area you live.

zandi... I don't hate you and yes I'm very upset on how you've treated these cats. It's not the cats fault that they're there, it's your daughters and that is another reason why I was so upset because it appeared that you were blaming them. Starving them is so cruel that I couldn't do that to ANY animal regardless of what it was. However, not everybody is going to feel this way about all animals and I can respect that as long as the animal is respected and not being done wrong. There is help out there, one just has to look for it. If you don't know how, then ask someone and if they don't know then ask another. If one door closes another opens. Again I want you to understand, I don't hate you but am very upset. BUT I'm glad you've changed your attitude towards them. Maybe in due time, you'll grow to love them. Who knows? They might be a benefit to you instead of a burden. No one knows why fate hands us the things we're dealt but everything has a reason. Okay? I'm joining you in that peace pipe!! lol We're all good! We're all good!!

I really wouldn't be too concerned about this. I've gotten some sharp or more than sharp replies over things I've put on the net even while trying to help people ! It stings but just forget it and they will too !

I think the "upset" came when you used the term "starve" to describe you not leaving food outdoors which attract the strays. That is quite a harsh term, and when people read that, I'm sure they felt you were being cruel and uncaring. I have the same problem with food being left outdoors. I have one cat, Sherbert, who came to me as a stray, and she refused to come inside the house for months, almost a year! So, I HAD to leave food outdoors for her to eat, and sure enough along came other strays, along with racoons, skunks, and even the ravens and magpies helped themselves!!! I was going through cat food like there was no tomorrow! FINALLY, in March of this year, she decided to TRUST US enough to come IN (besides it being BITTER COLD outside) and began coming inside the house. I have since removed the food dishes from outside, and I am not having the strays/racoons/skunks, etc problem AS MUCH! They still come around, but they don't STAY because there is no food OUTSIDE. Sherbert makes SURE that she comes inside at least twice a day and eats what she needs. She's also taking to sleeping with us, too. But if she has her "druthers" she still prefers to be outside, day or night!

Boy I can sympathize with you. I'm dealing with the same issue. Two years ago a starving kitten showed up on my door step. It was feral so I couldn't get near it, but I started feeding it. Over the two years more have come, some have had kittens. Ive found homes for four, adopted two, and had three fixed. But I can't keep up and like you I'm going thru huge bags of cat food. And its not just cats eating it. Racoons as big as a bus (or so it seems, lol) possums, squirrels you name it are eating the food. I've finally realized I am in over my head and tomorrow I have to call animal control. I've been upset all weekend about this choice because I know that they will put down these cats I've been watching grow. But I just can't save them all.

tesswhite... Yep... those raccoons can really get HUGE! In fact, just the other night, I saw a "mamma" and 3 cub raccoons in the driveway. I told them, "Oh no you don't! This isn't FAMILY HOUR! You go find your OWN food!" Calling animal control is often your best bet. I've had to take 3 strays to the shelter over the years... well... 3 ADULT strays. 2 of them had 9 kittens between them... so that totals 12 cats to the shelter. We tried to keep one of them, Missy, but she was very distructive, and peed all over my BF's jacket, chair, and HIS side of the bed.... his leather jacket was the last straw, and Missy had to go to the shelter. She has found a home, thankfully! It was at that time we adopted Paco... a "kitty for kitty" exchange. We haven't been kitty-free since! I do hope the shelter will be able to "home" at least some of the strays. Around here, people love having "barn cats" to keep the vermin down, so feral (or near-feral) cats can find homes.

i sympathize also. years ago, people used to drop cats off at my house because i always took them in/outside also. it was a bit of a problem at times but i love them so much i couldnt help it and fed them as best i could which was usually quit well. these days luckily, people have quit doing that as i live in a park now that dont allow them running free. dont know why. just moved here.

zandi I am so sorry people have gone after you like that, and I guess I sort of did a little bit too, but it was the use of the word starve that irked me. I do not hate you at all and I would never give you a negative rating just because I did not agree with you. you have a perfect right to your opinion and I must respect that as I would want to be respected for my own opinions. I will sure smoke the peace pipe in mylot with you and anyone else and am sorry you got hurt.YOu are right about stray cats, they should be caught and cared for by the proper authorities. If people would only spay and neuter their pet cats here would not be a plethora of stray cats to be dealt with.

Stray cats never make a good house pet, they are not domesticated.Having stray cats around your property can be a major bother. They get into garbage, use your lawn for a little box, some have disease.I don't think there is much that can be done for a stray unless it is a baby then you have a chance to make it more family oriented. The best way to avoid strays in in neutering and spaying, however that really doesn't give the cats a home either and I don't agree with putting them to sleep.I guess I don't have a good response as to what to do about them,I just don't think you should have been bashed for your opinion every body is entitled to their opinion.I don't know what I would do in your situation, maybe since they are already strays catch them and drop them at a farm. Then they help the farmers by killing mice and rats, and they can stay warm at night in the barn, and have plenty f food.Just a thought. i dont know what is going on here but i live in a place where we have strays come to my house. we are not allowed to have them and honestly dont want them because we have so many woods around us and there are ticks and other bugs that climb on these strays. so its not that i dont like cats, i do, but we cannot have them and therefore i do not do anything to them. i think you should, if possible, call animal control or get them to a shelter if possible, but thats just me. i had one give birth to 4 lil kittens and thats what i did was take them to the shelter. again, thats just me and i have no idea what is going on here! best to all of you that you get it worked out!
