This isn't really an invention, but on Friday night as I was drifting off to sleep I had this great idea to start my own cupcake shop! I'm quite interested in cake decoration and I thought that a nice little cupcake shop with really pretty decor and delicious pretty cpcakes would be a good idea. The next morning my boyfriend and I got up early to go to the markets. What did I come across? A stall that was for a small shop in my town called 'The cupcake Parlour' and of course the lady had reall pretty cupcakes, just like my idea!I couldn't believe it, literally hours after I got my big idea, my hopes and dreams were slashed. Has this ever happened to you?

Hi coffeeshot! I guess, I experienced it the other way around. After I graduated in college, my husband and I had this great idea of putting up a personalized novelty shop wherein people can have items made to order such as personalized handmade cards/invitations, shirts, scupltures/busts, caricatures, souvenirs for baptism, debuts, weddings, etc and all items will be unique in design and no designs will be made again. So we opened that shop and many people came to us telling us that they have thought of it first. That was alright because I could not really own the idea. However, on my next venture in business, I thought up of a one stop wedding shop, wherein all wedding services will be handled by me and my partners. So we opened it and an acquaintance of ours went at our shop and told us that it was her idea and she really was upset about it and told us that I have stolen the idea from her. Yikes!NOT TRUE! However all those ideas that I have were not original, it just so happened that there were no other shops like that in our area before and I thought it will be a great idea to be the first to open shops like that in our area. And it was! Those two businesses lasted for almost twenty years until the big corporations put us out of business. Oh well, I still have the memories. haha..however, I do think that you can still put up your cupcake shop and just make it more attractive and more yummy looking than the competitor. Just think of ideas that can attract your customers. The market is too big for just one cupcake shop. Good luck and may you follow your dreams dear! Take care and God bless!

How dare they come and tell you that! That's like me marching into the cupcake parlour and telling her that I thought of it first! How unfortunate for you.

Hi coffeeshot! Oh, i don't think you will be marching at that cupcake parlor and tell the owner that it is your idea..I think that if ever you talk to the owner, you will be just telling her that you have an idea just like hers and that you plan to have one cupcake shop and will wish her luck and she will encourage you and wish you luck just the same and she and you will be exchanging tips and strategies and be good friends and all will be beautiful and positive energy surrounding you from then on. i think that is what i think will happen if you enter the cupcake parlor. haha..I think highly of you my friend, so don't say I am wrong. haha.. Take care and God bless!

Uh, I was going to say, that is not exactly an invention. But that doesn't mean you can't do it if you like. How about a muffin shop? Or a scone shop, lol. I have invented a few things. Some are good enough that I should patent them, but that is such a drawn out process and so expensive. I just never bothered.

If you're confident about your inventions maybe you should go for it! Look at the quote in the first response

Lol, lol, it is not about fear of failure, it is about fear of succeeding and having to WORK. Hah! I am just so happy being retired! I just want to do my own thing and after a lifetime of sharing I want to just use my own inventions myself! I will try to write them up though to leave a record for others to enjoy after I pass from this mortal coil, tee hee. But truly, time is on my side.

It is not actually an invention but a business idea... i once thought of buying a franchise and setting it up in front of a school near my apartment... but before i can even call or inquire about it... somebody already beat me to it... since the very same franchise was set up the following day... and right now... it is doing very good... that could have been mine... but it was not meant to be...

It hasn't happened to me, but I don't think your hopes and dreams have been slashed quite yet. After all, this shop allows you to see what's working and what isn't. So when you set up your own cupcake shop in the next town you'll be so much better

Well I've been playing with the idea of a purpetual motion machine since...well for months now, just for fun! Lol. Otherwise I created a little mini-environment when I was a kid for science in school. I called it the MicroClimate. It involved a plastic or glass container, a plant, water, and some sand. It sorta worked...because it eventually developed vapors that hung around the top of the environment (like clouds) and the plant did pretty well. I've been itching to see if I can duplicate it again, heh.

Yes I have had my hopes and dreams smashed like that. I invented something and was talking to a company about manufacturing that item. I got a catalog in the mail and guess what was in there. My idea someone has beaten me to it.

When my first son was young he is 32 now he had a dummy and I said to my sister that I was going to invent a cover holder for dummys and she laughed at me and now they have them for dummys, wish I had done it at the time.

I once tried inventing games ! And I was totally discouraged by the fact that I couldn't get anybody to consider marketing them for me. It was years ago but I still remember the disappointment over the responses I got when I wrote people. A really popular game can earn somebody a lot of spare money but its just not easy to get them marketed.

My ex and my son are the inventors. My son has come up with numerous ideas that we'll see on the market later - sometimes as soon as 6 months, sometimes as long as 4 years. So many times, he's said he wished he had the money to follow through with his ideas.

I've had some ideas of my own. The internet makes the world a really small place so it's pretty easy to do some googling and find someone that has made the same thing or something similar already. Don't let that discourage you though if you really want to have your own cupcake shop get out there and do it! Build a better cupcake!

Yes, it happends sometime. and many people would have great ideas of their own.But just like most of us, we seldom will bring it to reality. That's the difference between a successful person and a ordinary one, i think.

I wanted to open a small "dog cafe" that sold home baked, healthy dog treats and food. Next thing I know, I read an article about a company looking to open franchises, and it looked pretty easy to get one started. Then I found out that someone had already opened 3 in the towns near me. I was crushed.

What a great idea you had! Cupcakes are really popular right now. So popular that you shouldn't give up on your idea just yet. In fact, you should make samples of your cupcakes and take them to other specialty shops and restaurants in your area to see if they would be interested in using your creations. As for me, I did create something once. My idea came from the time I saw a high-priced hair stylist sell his hair oil on QVC. The oil was supposed to be a conditioner used before shampooing to help mend hair that was over processed and dull. When I saw how much he was charging for it, I began doing some research on the internet and came up with a formula I could easily make at home. I told my own hair stylist about it and she actually began using it in her shop so I made two kinds, one for blonde hair and one for dark hair. I never got rich off my idea, but I'm so proud of myself for thinking a little outside the box.

no this has not ever happened to me yet.but i do have a great idea for hospitals and the elderly.i want to invent a mat ,so when the elderly are sat out in chairs they have something soft to put there feet on.time and time again i come across patients who been sat out in chairs with no slippers on and that infuriates me,so i will have to get busy with my design.i would be devasted if some one beat me to it.i love those fancy cup cakes and my friends daughter makes them and the kids love them.she was approached by people from a party fuction place and asked to make them for childrens birthday parties.maybe you could look into that.cheers sue
