I have a cooon cat who is 25lbs and has long hair. I know my baby boy loves his long hair because he always wants it brushed. In the past when i have cut his hair he has the sappy look, like i feel stupid with this hair cut. Maybe he is not a fan of the lion cut:( Anyways i heard that cutting the hair just makes him even more cottony. Its really getting hot and even though he doesnt go outside, its to hot in the house. I feel bad that he is all passed out on the floor. Then when i get home he wants me to hold him. I dont want to hold him, cuz he makes me hot. I am a bit torn because i do want to shave him, but dont want to do it if its going to end up ruining his beautiful coat. I know the hair will grow back but ugh we all know shaving a cat can be loads of work. What do you think?

Unless you have the supplies you need, a professional might be the best option.

unless you're 100% sure of his reaction to the noise,i second the professional.

i used to have an angora/tabby mix i'd get the lion cut for in the summer, the fur grows back perfectly fine.he'd be embarassed acting the first couple of days, but he'd settle in about it. it gets so humid here he'd get overheated if he didn't get the haircut.

Lol isn't it funny how embarrassed they get. usually when he has all his hair he is king and walks around like he is boss man. Aww to see my sad fatty boom boom sitting in the corner with his head down is going to be a bit funny. Usualy i have to hold him til his ego subsides.

We have cats like that - we cut their hair for a lot of reasons. If you don't brush it frequently it gets matted underneath and can cause skin irritation. I don't think it bothers them so much. It's more likely that it's the weight that bothers him. Taking the extra pounds off through cutting his hair will certainly make him lighter especially during the hot summer months.

Yeah he gets brushed daily but the fur is killing me. I am sure he is ok with it but it makes me hot. I think i will go for the cut like everyone suggest. I love mylot, people give great responses. I hope i wont procrastinate now that i have the answer.

I have a Maine Coone, too, and I usually shave her down when it gets really, really hot. It hasn't gotten too hot, this year, but I did last year. Her coat did come in more cottony, but I bought a rake, raked out all of the crazy, fluff stuff, and that fixed the problem. It's a bit more work than just shaving her, but she had a lot of hairball issues until I raked her down. Good luck! I think cats just like to make you feel bad when it comes to their hair.

Yea they sure do. by the by the cat in the picture is my actual big boy. I think the fact that i baby him will make his attitude worse. The only good thing is that he is good for me and will allow me to cut/shave/brush his hair without him freaking out. The down side is he likes to bite the scissors/clipper/brush at least one time in the process. Well i am happy that brushing will get rid of that cottony fuzz. I love when he is that soft but days later matts start to form and the brush gets tangled
