I never understood this either. Some people claim that their dog is part of the family and such, only to leave them out in the cold or the heat. A dog should be indoors because of the possibility of something attacking it outside. Even if you have a fence you never know what could happen. I've heard stories about people stealing dogs to use in a dog fighting competitions as bait.

Thankyou very much for your comment, you are on my wavelength. I have never understood it myself, some people have taken my question the wrong way!! But i wonder if the answer would be the same if that 80 pound dog attacked someone? like you say it does not matter if there is a fence up your dog can still get out when your back is turned, no matter what weight or size. thankyou once again.

I agree with amanda. Have you ever tried to restrain an 80 pound dog in the house who wanted to be outside? Also many people love their horses, but they don't keep them in the house. A small dog is different, they prefer to be all snugly and warm inside but often big dogs just don't like it. They think it is their job to guard the property. Sometimes from every friggin leaf that blows by.

This is exactly my point can you restrain a 80 pound dog from jumping a fence or gate or even attacking someone?

I have no idea. I have 2 dogs who are so humanized that they need to be told to go outside. And if it is raining forget it. These guys actually walk around puddles instead of through them. They are my kids. They are family members. Mine are not left outside alone - EVER!

Thankyou for your comment. My nan has five small dogs and they sound just like yours if it is raining you have to drag them outside to go to the toilet, lol. and my nan never leaves them outside alone either. I do sometimes wonder where the saying 'a dog is a man's best friend' actually came from. Thankyou again.

Some dogs, believe it or not.. actually prefer to live outside... and as long as the weather is not inclement and they seem comfortable, I do not see why this is a problem... you have to remember that we socialized dogs... their insticts are to be outside and free.. sometimes they do not like to be inside, or maybe they are just too rambunctious to live inside when their owner is at work.... they may have a behavioral problem and this owner may be doing them a favor as being the only one willing to deal with such a problem... I am not sure why this particular person keeps their dog outside.. but I am just saying there could be many possibilities as to why the dog lives outside.. maybe you would get a clearer answer if you questioned the person at hand... ;)

Thankyou for your comment. As you say some dogs like to live outside which is fair enough, but you also said when their owner is at work, which is not really good, should that dog who may have behavioral problem get out and attack someone or kill the neighbours cat do you think that owner will be able to see the reasoning as well as you? I never actually said that a certain person kept their dog outside it was just a general question. Thanks again
