Vegetables and the fridge crisper!

In the past I have put most of the vegetables in the crisper in the bags that they came in. In doing this do they stay fresher or are they better out of the bags and just placed in the crisper? I try to limit my shopping so buy quite a bit for maybe a weeks' meals, and do get them from a fruit and vege. shop not the supermarket in which I have done for many years in the past. They do seem nicer quality but am not always around this shop so do buy to last longer.

To be honest, I've never actually mastered the crisper! Mine has a little slider on it, so you can make it colder or warmer or whatever. Well, sometimes I have iced lettuce - and sometimes I have brown lettuce. I'm never sure what to do! According to something I once read, you're supposed to cut the heart out of the lettuce and leave it wrapped in plastic - but I haven't noticed that makes much difference. The other night I even had frozen carrots - so I'm hopeless ...

I noticed that slider guybrush and it seems to move when taking something out of the shelf above so not sure where it is meant to be! I guess the further it is closed the colder the product gets, and have heard that taking the middle out of the lettuce is better for it.

Yep - my slider has a mind of its own - hahaha! Also, you're not supposed to cut lettuce with a metal knife, as it goes brown. (I suppose we're supposed to attack them with our bare hands and rip them apart!)

Well I believe in keeping the veg out of the bags and in the crisper box Caramello as I was told many years ago that the bags stopped the veg from 'breathing' and made them sweat. Not sure if this is true but I never keep them in the bag ! xxx

It is quite possible I was told this in the past mummymo but may have slipped the mind. As having done the deed a few days ago I have noticed a difference. xo

I wish I lived near an old fashioned type fruit shop but I don't, I was told by someone in here that it is good to wrap everything in paper towell in the fridge to help keep things fresh.

That is a shame lilaclady that you don't have one close by. The paper towel seems to be a good thing so will get to it now. Thank-you.

sue I have now done the paper towel bit, and it even looks neater and at least I can see what is in there! We have a couple of really good fruit and vege. shops and much prefer them.
