The vet is coming tomorrow to put my dog to sleep. He's been with me for 16 years of my life, and I know in my heart it is time, but I am so sad and so scared. He's been such a good friend, and loyal companion, I couldn't even sleep last night. Today, we are going to go for one more little hike in the woods,as far as he can make it, and a car ride, which he loves. I'm going to share some ice cream with him, and make our last full day together as fun as I can, but I am so sick to my stomach about losing him. I don't know how to say goodbye!

I know what it's like to lose a pet, we had a cat for about 10 years and she was older than me! But they had to have her put down at the vets. It is a sad thing, but if there is a good reason then it may be for the best. In terms of saying goodbye, I would say that what you already have planned is a great idea, just make sure he knows you love him an that'll be enough.

You're never truly prepared for the moment. I can only hope he knew how much I loved him.

hello cassidy22, thanks for making me cry i have not cried this fast here in mylot just reading a discussion but i did this time coz i know exactly what it is like to lose a best buddy. you are lucky in some ways coz you are there on his last minute. i was out of the country when my buddy left me. it was very painful coz i have her for 15 years and it was a great one. she is a sweetheart and she just love to hug and dance with me all the time. she is part of my childhood as well as my teenage life so it is painful and i cried so much when i heard the news from my mom. i find it always amazing coz my dog showed up in my dream the night she left. that dream triggers me to call my mom and check on her and only to find out she already left. anyway, it is very sweet of you to treat your dog to something that he will remember before he goes. i honestly wont make it to that hospital and i can assure my hubby that i will be crying really hard if our dog's retirement arrives. we have a dog right now and that makes me cry as well coz i cant imagine losing him as he is my boy who is so loving and just a bundle of joy. sorry i dont have the right words to say, losing a part of us is always hard and there is no way that such space will be taken for awhile (i hope) i am also sorry that i have to be emotional as well as it is something that hurts me the way it does to you. anyway, i hope you guys enjoy your trip at the mountain. remember to take lots of photos and even take a video so you have something to watch and look whenever you miss him. i wish you all the best. give my hugs to your sunshine! takecare

Oh my goodness cassidy, you're making me cry here myself. I don't think there's one person who has ever had a pet who has had to face this decision and it's never easy. I've had pets since I was five years old and I had to go through that twice in my life. I'm glad you're having a last day with your dog though...that is probably the greatest act of love you can show and give him.

I am so sorry. I know how you feel we have had a few dogs in our life put to sleep, the most recent was 2 years ago. It is as painful a feeling as losing any family member.

You have brought tears to my eyes and the urge to go spend as much time with my Miniature Pinscher as possible.. I can't even imagine the hurt and pain you must be going through. I am deeply sorry for your loss, as animals are as part of our families as humans are, and sometimes even more so. I hope he enjoys his day with you, before he goes to doggie heaven and will watch over you, and go on car rides all the time.

I have put a few furry friends to sleep and I have to say that it is a beautiful thing to do for them, but it is a difficult loss. I hope you will give yourself ample time to grieve, but then consider going to a local shelter to give a new friend a place in your home and heart!

That's never easy, letting go, I had a golden retriever that was with us for 14 years, she passed away with her head in my lap. But, it sounds like he'll have a wonderful last day with you. And since you stated that you know it's time in your heart, then you'll be okay. Just think of all the wonderful things you two have shared. And it sounds like he's had a very full and wonderful life with you. And remember.....All dogs go to Heaven! As for saying goodbye, hug him, kiss him on the head and tell him you love him, but I think he already knows that.

It is hard to let go. I asked the vet, why would God be so nice to give us dogs, man's best friend, but only let us have them for such a short time. It doens't seem fair to have to say goodbye. I'm sorry for the loss of your dog, but she was loved.

I feel sorry for you my friend. It is not an easy thing to do, I know because I just had to put down my Pugsly. He was only 12 years old but he has suffered with cancer for the last two years and after 3 very expensive surgeries it has returned again and so it was time to put him down. I couldn't go with him to do it, so my husband took him. He stayed with him and had him die in his arms. My husband came home in tears and then we both sat together and had a good cry. It was one of the sadest things we had to do. I will never get another dog because I could never go through that again. Now that was 3 months ago that you posted this discussion so I know you are probably over it as much as we ever get over it. Are you or have you, gotten another dog?

I'm so sorry for your loss. Its hard to lose a friend whos been in your life for that long. Why did it have to happen? I understand how it feels - we had to say good bye to casper last spring (female cocker spaniel) we had had since i was 9 she was 16 and the cancer treatments weren't helping anymore she was in too much pain. I had to take her in because my mom couldn't and I cried when i left to go in because she just laid with her head on my lap all the way into town looking at me like she understood and was saying good bye to me. The most you can really do to say good bye is still love them and greive...maybe cry for them occasionally when you think of them.

You must say goodbye because every relation is not forever. You have to understand that people and all living are the guest in this earth so we must left one day . We have to left each and everything we earn we can't take all those thing all together so keep your heart strong enough.

Hi Cassidy, Reading your post makes it impossible not to resond to your pain. I won't share my experiences with my old friends because you are in enough pain. It is one of the hardest decisions anyone has to make. Just don't ever second quess your decision. You are doing what you have to do and even though we've never met, I'm proud of you. Be strong. You have a lot of friends here who are prayinf for you both. Leenie

Oh cassidy, I feel for you. I went through the same thing with my baby, actually 2 of them. I had for years and had to have put to sleep. It hurt so much and the first one I was sent home to have a few more hours with. I just held him and loved him, told him how much I loved him and that I was going to miss him but I also understood that he had to go to rest. And that he would not be sick or hurting any longer. I apol;ogized for making him stay here longer because of me being selfiah and not being able to let him go. I cried so much as I am doing now. I love my babies so and I do know what you are going through. You are doing the best you can for your friend. It's all you can do for his sake. Many, many blessings to you. It will take time but you will get through this.

I'm so sorry you're going through this and I do know what it's like, it's never easy to say goodbye to a beloved furry friend. Bless you for planning to make his last day with you so special! My daughter went through this not too long ago, her beloved Shi-tzu (SP) Pu-Pu had to be put down a few years ago at the age of 19. My son-in-law and his brother took her because neither my daughter or I could handle it and it wasn't easy for him, either. However, sometimes we have to do what's best for our pets no matter how much it hurts. Since it may be over by now I sure hope you and your wonderful friend made the most of your final day together and that you can concentrate on remembering the good times. I'm in tears myself as I type this because I honestly do "feel your pain", as corny as that may sound. HUGS! Annie

I'm so touched by the friendship and love of you and your 'old friend'. He has given you the best days of his life and the only thing you can do now is to wish him all the best in Heaven and live your life happily as I am sure he wants you to be happy. I hope you have enjoyed your last day with him and I wish him all the best. RIP.

I feel for you, I've been there many times and it always breaks my heart! It's not going to be easy for you, but all our thoughts will be with you! Mourn him as he deserves but try and remember you are doing what is right for him. It's the kindest thing we can do for our pets, if we do it for love. Look up 'Rainbow Bridge' on your search engine! It's a beautiful poem about our beloved dogs playing happily whilst waiting for us to join them. I like to think all my past canine and feline companions are altogether in a 'pack' which others will join. (Hopefully not too soon, though my cat is 18 now.) They'll all be there when I have to cross the bridge! Enjoy your day with him as much as you can and take some photographs! You'll be happy to look back on them one day. Love & Best wishes

Its sad to have to say good-bye to a pet that you've had for that long. If you don't mind my asking but why are you putting him to sleep? I would just let him live out the rest of his days, as long as he could. Its too hard to do anything, if you keep thinking that tomorrow is the day, this is my last time with him. I would just rather not know when, and let nature take its course, unless he's very ill or something, and its just causing him more grief by not doing anything for him, then I would understand that. That may be the case for you, but anyway, I hope things go good for you and that you get to say your goodbyes..
