For all of you who expressed concern and gave ideas on how she was behaving here is the update. We just got back from the vets. He seems to think she may have herniated a disk or two in her back. He decided this with no xrays. Not sure how I feel about that, but guess it did save me some money. He gave her a shot which has cortisone in it, and gave me steroid pills I think they are to give for the next five days. Other than that, he said she needs to lose weight and no exercise right now and no jumping or stairs. Oh and the bill was under 80.00 so we can manage that. Thanks everyone!

It's sad to see when an animal is suffering so bad in pain. It's good you brought her to the vet. The medication should help I hope she does much better soon. Give her lot's of love and reassure her everything is ok she will sense it. Good luck and have a good day.

Thank you for the update and hopefully the medicines will help her. Maybe he could tell about the disk by feeling around? Speedy recovery Abby.

Believe it or not he didn't even do an exam. He trimmed her nails, listened to her behavior and then decided it was her back. Thats why I was skeptical of diagnosing it that way. But, he says he sees it alot in small dogs that jump from furniture. So we will see - if the meds help.

I'm glad to hear you took Abby to the vet and he was able to figure out what the problem was..and thank goodness it didn't cost an arm and a leg as I know how expensive vets can be. Did he give any indication that Abby was in any pain though? Sure hope not. My prayers are reaching out for Abby's healing...and that she can manage to loose some weight..LOL. My Kissy's a bit on the chubby side herself..but don't tell her that...hehe

Yes, she has been in alot of pain - he says thats why she has been hiding and cowering and yelping so loudly for no apparent reason. The shot he gave her has really helped though. We are making sure she sticks to her diet and she isn't allowed to jump up and down off the furniture - not that she wants to right now.

Hi Tess, Thank you for the update on Abby I sure hope the cortisone shot and steroid pills help her out. A Vet has the expertise to be able to feel out these things and it sounded like he did save you some cash by not having to take xrays. I'm glad you were able to manage the bill. That always helps too! Have a great day, Char

Hey Tess, I'm so glad to hear Abby's doing better. That's a great Vet you went to. You can tell that he cares about animals and isn't just out to make money because he treated her without x-rays and was willing to give her a treatment that will help make her feel better. I had a Vet like that. That meant alot to me. Knowing that a Vet really cares about animals is the true test. When I had to put my cat to sleep my Vet cried too. Now that is a true animal lover!

That's awesome to hear Tess!! I was really concerned for your little dear one!! I imagine the doctor felt her back and found the herniated disc and is how he knows. Sometimes it doesn't take an x-ray to "feel" it. I'm only guessing though and by not doing an x-ray really did save you a bundle! Poor little thing has to be in some kind of pain for herniated disc's are no laughing matter. Bless her heart!! I hope she feels better really soon!!

When the vet gave her the shot he said he figured she would feel alot better by this evening. Well I just got home from the grocery store, and there she stood, head and ears up and tail going like crazy. Seems the shot did help.

I would imagine that an experienced vet has seen symptoms like this before and can come to a competent diagnosis. He probably didn't want to cause her pain by poking and prodding her. I hope the steroids work and she hurts less. Did he give you any tips on helping her lose weight? I give my cats mashed French cut green beans mixed with their canned food. Since they don't eat dry and don't seem to mind the beans at all, over time this will slim them a bit.
