http://www.crooksandliars.com/2008/07/16/liddy-dole-proposing-naming-aids-bill-after-jesse-helms/ SA 5074. Mrs. DOLE submitted an amendment intended to be proposed by her to the bill S. 2731, to authorize appropriations for fiscal years 2009 through 2013 to provide assistance to foreign countries to combat HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and for other purposes; which was ordered to lie on the table; as follows: On page 1, line 5, strike ”and Henry J. Hyde” and insert ”, Henry J. Hyde, and Jesse Helms”. Is this about the most preposterous thing anyone's ever heard of? The truth is, it's doubtful the late Jesse Helms would even WANT his name attached to this bill! Here are a few things Helms has said about HIV/AIDS: He described AIDS prevention literature as "so obscene, so revolting, I may throw up." He opposed the Kennedy-Hatch AIDS research bill, saying, "There is not one single case of AIDS in this country that cannot be traced in origin to sodomy." In opposition to refunding the Ryan White Act who you may remember was a teenager who died of AIDS after having contacting it through blood transfusions he'd received due hemophilia, Helms said the government should spend less on people with AIDS because they got sick due to their "deliberate, disgusting, revolting conduct." Does anyone here think he deserves to have this bill named in his honor? Annie

That's just a stupid idea. I know he's passed, and there are people that want to honor him, but just look at the guy. He was a racist and a biggot. Both his voting record and his public statements make that abundantly clear. It's actually sad that there were enough ignorant people willing to keep voting him back into office. The last thing we need is to start naming things after him.

I don't think she meant it to be funny, though! Annie
