My neighbor's visitor lied to me,what is he after?

There was this morning a Man came knocking o door,he was looking for my neighbor,although i knew she was not there but i told him that i don't know anything,since i didn't want to get myself involved in things of that nature. He told me so many things about this lady and at the end of 'his speech'he said she just lost her close relative and that she should be going for the burial that same day.It was just too much that i told him that he should leave his name and i will let her know that he was around. When her daughter came back, i told her about this man's visit,i was very concerned if she was back from the burial but the daughter told me that there was not burial and that she just went out. What do you think this person is after,why did he lie to me?
