Millionaire gone bankrupt

A little while ago, a woman bought a lottery ticket containing the lucky numbers and won a million dollars. She was completely broke, so the money would really help her out with paying off her debts and getting a new start. I thought it was great. Good for her! I mean, what are the chances of that?! However, only a few days after that whole thing took place, the state seized the money and threw her in jail. What happened, you might ask? She bought the lottery ticket with a stolen credit card! It wouldn’t have been a big deal, and they probably never would’ve found out, but state officials knew the card was stolen when she continued using it to make purchases. Should this be put on the list for world’s dumbest criminals? (LOL) Please share your ideas as I thought this was a pretty interesting subject!

it would be right and justifiable to call her dumb, if i were her i would of course get rid of my secret ingredient (stolen credit card) and make sure that some of the cash is invested.

Thanks for the reassurance, Tom. (LOL) I guess her illegal act really caught up with her. It sounds like a typical situation. Just when she won the lottery and things started finally looking up for her, she ended up losing even more than she had in the first place! It's sad, but it's really funny if you think about it. She's in no worse shape than she was in the beginning...except for the jail part...but hey, it's a place to live with food and a roof over her head! (LOL) This probably sounds pathetic, but thanks for your input. I think she really is dumb. I hope she learned from this mistake.

There is a saying that goes,... your sin will find you out. Maybe if she did not win the lottery no body will find out that she uses stolen credit card?Well, most often when people are cheating, there is always a way the they will be caught. Wrong doers will never remain unpunished. Consequence will always follow wherever these people would go.

Excellent point, Scott! Thanks for adding the additional comment here. I'm finding that most states don't allow the buying of lottery tickets using a credit card for obvious reasons. Thanks for mentioning that.

Oh!! thanks for making my response best, I did not expect that.. I just believe that people who cheat will always reap the consequence of what they did.

You know what I just realized, in our state it isn't legal to bu lottery tickets with credit cards. I am not sure you can even pay for them with checks. Obviously that makes sense cause if you default on those than it would be a big mess to the state and the lottery program. Plus the interest the store is charged for selling by credit cards would greatly reduce the little profit they make from selling them as well.

I agree that she should have gone to jail, but I disagree with taking her winnings off her. She stole the credit card, so that she had some money, yes it was wrong, but if she was in a large amount of debt then she was probably getting desperate. So when she gets out of jail in a few years time, she will still have nothing and have huger debts, so what is going to happen? She will do it again most likely. If she had the money to look forward to when she got out then maybe she could turn her life around and not resort to crime again.

I am in shock she could have had a good lump sum of money but oh yeah only if she did it the correct way. What did she think she wasn't going to get caught? this was not a smart move on her behalf and now that you told us why shhe had the money seized and herself put into jail for fraud I'm glad she lost it all. people that do this kind of thing makes me mad. She will be thinking twice on this one for a while seeing she won't be going any where for a while. Good for the authorities to pick up on that.

Yours is a great standard to have. My philosophy is that if I don't have the money to buy it and no one gives it to me, I don't need it. There's no good reason in this world to steal something...unless, of course, it's your significant other's heart. (LOL) That was cheesy...sorry. Ha, ha. Thanks for your response. Take care!

Well Never Heard of Such Incidents. As far About the Criminal Never saw as Dumb as This one. When u Told That the State Seized the Money and Threw in Jail. I Begin to Think Why Would The State do That. But After Reading The Whole Story. I Just Begin to Think That Unseens Stupid People That We Hear in Stories or Incidents Still do Exist.

It goes to show that stupid and just plain strange people still do exist. This particular woman had a lot of past crime behind her name, so this incident probably wasn't an uncommon one to happen to her (except for the unplanned winning the lottery part). What a shame that she didn't stop while she was ahead. I think criminals should just give up because their greed won't get them anywhere. Thanks for participating.

This is funny. After all, the woman looked so frantic in this scenario. She should have used all her money to go to other place or country perhaps after she won the prize. This was a story where real bucks turned into stones afterwards. Terrible.

I find it interesting that you pictured this woman in the scenario of the discussion. I did the same and tried to figure out why she did what she did. It doesn't make sense, but really is pretty funny if you ask me. (LOL) When criminals have no clue, it's hilarious. One thing I have to mention, though, is that when a person wins the lottery, they don't get the money all at once. It takes a few years for them to get everything. That's the way it goes. I don't know how much you know about the lottery, so I thought I'd mention that. It sounded like (according to this article I read where I found out about this woman) that people who win the lottery get like $35,000 a year for several years until the whole million is paid off. It makes it seem like it's not as much money, and they probably take taxes out of it too. It's sad. Oh well...it's not like she got the money anyway. (LOL) Thanks for the chuckle.

They let people use credit cards to buy lotto? Where I live they only take cash for it. Can you imagine the situation with this lady just the same! Here I am, a millionaire! And then the next minute she is eating food from tin plate and staring at bars. Hmm. Talk about a big turn on events! I guess the only thing worse then that is becoming a millionaire and then dying the very next day! Or worse, getting a divorce and your ex taking it all! Yikes!

I really appreciate your response because you named two even worse scenarios than what happened to this particular woman. If you ask me, she got what was coming to her. According to the article (I posted the link in a comment to this discussion somewhere), she had quite a history of things like this. Her greed definitely didn't get her anywhere except for behind bars. Justice was served. Thanks for your response and for the good laugh when considering the two alternatives to this situation!

It is indeed pretty interesting and one would be inclined to think of poetic justice. I guess she was just not meant to be a millionaire.

I think she'll deserve to be a millionaire after she learns to stop charging her payments on other people's credit cards. (LOL) Once she learns to work for money to buy the things she wants and needs, then she'll be more of a candidate to win the lottery, in my opinion. (LOL) Thanks for your response.

good day.. she does qualified to that. I mean if she won that much why on earth would she continue using it and think that she would get away with that?

She probably continued to use it because she didn't get the money all at once. That's how they do the lottery. However, she'd gotten into a rut of using money that wasn't hers, so I'm sure she was more than comfortable using someone else's money. She continued being greedy, and her greed got her caught and she didn't get the money after all. I think justice was served here. I wonder the same thing as you, though. Did she really think she wouldn't get caught after continuing to use the credit card after she won the money? Good thought.

Wow, she really should have just called it quits after she won the million. That is a really unfortunate story. Like someone said earlier, this just refines my belief of karma. Karma always finds a way to sneak up behind you and bite you in the butt. Haha. But I wouldn't put her on the world's dumbest criminals, she just got greedy that's all. She was probably using the credit card for a really long time before all of a sudden the fact that it was stolen came back to haunt her. Thanks for sharing that story.

wow, you would think with that kind of money she would not want to continue using the card. But they say what goes around comes around.

Justice was served, and she got what she deserved. I think she definitely got what was coming to her. Unfortunately, that's not always the case, but that's what makes this situation so funny. Hopefully she learned a valuable lesson from this experience.

I guess she is using her head for decoration. If she had bought with cash, then she would still have the million dollars, but who in their right mind would buy a lottery ticket with a credit card and stolen at that? And for her to keep on making purchases with it, when she has the million dollars right there. She could have returned the card, said she found it, and offered to reimuburse the ten dollars used to buy the lottery ticket, but she did not.

Good idea! Should could've at least offered to use some of her winnings to reimburse them for the ticket in the first place since she still did get the winning ticket. Of course, I don't know if the authorities would let that go through, but at least it's a thought. Great idea and very unique. I'm glad for your response because you thought of something no one else did so far that would've been what I think is a pretty good solution to this poor woman's problems. Thanks, Suspense!

Oh my goodness... How stoopid could that woman be.... It's a funny thing that even though she already won a million, she still used the card. oh my goodness.... Well, all I can say I think is that good for her.. she got what she deserves for using a stolen card.. goes to show, crime really doesn't pay

I think she continued to lose brain cells each time she used that credit card up until when she bought the lottery ticket and then afterwards. (LOL) We're in agreement on that one. She should definitely be added to "World's Dumbest Criminals." Ha, ha. Thanks for the chuckle and for your response.

She definitely was too greedy for her own good. She wouldn't have been able to handle all that money. I agree with your response completely. People like this don't deserve to win and have that much money. They need to learn to work for it so they can come to appreciate it as well. Thanks, Jolie!

If she knew, she could win, she would't buy the lottery ticket. She might as well buy food for herself, right? Many of us would say she is dumb, but I say it was her faith. She has done wrong for stealing. But her act has opted her winning a huge sum of money and she use it to clear off her debts. Can't the owner of the credit card settle the matter outside court in a win win situation? He can drop the charge and get the rest of the money from her. At least the dumd act of the woman had made him richer too. After all if he did not loose the credit card, he would'nt use it to buy lottery ticket and won the million dollars.

Yes, definately this would make the list for the world's dumbest criminals! I mean, WOW.. winning a million dollars with money that is not her own! But dumb enough to keep using the stolen credit card to make purchases. How stupid is that!? Then what is the use of winning that lot of money in the very first place if she is not going to use it? Tsk Tsk some people ... just... don't... get... it!

You said it! (LOL) I got a good laugh out of your response because those were my thoughts exactly when I heard this had actually happened. This kind of thing makes you want to jump inside that woman's head for just a couple of minutes to figure out what in the world she was thinking when she did all this. My assumption is that she wasn't thinking. (LOL) Thanks for sharing your thoughts. It definitely made me life. I'm glad we agree on this issue.
