Thank goodness that was all he needed.. He went to the van to get his sunglasses..I was putting library books in the van at the same time..The van was parked on the street in front of my house.... He jumped out first..and it happened all so quick...... A teenage boy riding his bike down the hill on the sidewalk collided with my 6 year old grandson and he got drug by the bike for a few feet....He was rolling beneath the pedal of the bike...The kid stopped right away...he said he was so sorry... My grandson got up and I layed him down on the ground and checked his head for injury...It was bleeding...I put pressure on it and then got a rag from my son....I checked the rest of his head and body..just a few scraps..... My husband was mad..and I told him to calm down...The teenager was visibly shaken...I told him it wasn't his fault..only that he should not have been riding that fast on the sidewalk... My grandson was saying, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry." The older kid was telling him it was okay and that it wasn't his (grandsons) fault.... It was just a freak accident...The boy asked if he should leave his name and number and I told him no...but did ask for his name....I told him it was okay to leave..and not to worry...It wasn't his fault.....He said he was sorry again before he left.... It was so scary to see him tumbling under that bike....He could have broke his little neck....It happened so fast..... He is doing good so far....

That must've been really scarey for both you and your grandson. I'm glad he is okYes, it was an accident, but that is one of my pet peeves, is kids, especially older ones, riding on the footpath. I see them riding past shop fronts, and know that is an old lady, or young kid steps out the door at the wrong time, there will be a mess. It is good that the boy was very apologetic, and hopefully he has learnt from the scarey incident, and is much more careful in future. Once again, I'm glad your grandson is ok.

I agree, Feona he probably is a good kid, which means he probably learnt from his act, but as you say he shouldn't have been on the footpath. It could have been you as well, the speed he was obviously going, but unfortunately with kids, it takes something like this for it to sink in that they are doing what they shouldn't be. Still, your granson is ok, and that is the main thing. And I bet you're still spoiling him....hugs!

Hi muscare.. I could not believe what I had just seen...I was facing my van and just before he hit him is when I caught a glimpse of him....He was going so very fast..... I do believe he is a good kid...He felt bad and did stay until I told him to go...I just wanted him to calm down first before he took off again..... He should not have been on the sidewalk in the first place..... My grandson is doing well now...Thank you...Hugs...

My husband was very angry at the kid....I told him to calm down because I didn't want a confrontation in front of my grandson.. He is doing alot better and of course I am spoiling him as always....We have been playing Star Wars Monopoly and he has been winning all the time....I am going to have to cheat to beat him....LOL..

That is a frightening scenario, I am glad that he is ok. It's just another example of the fact that you never know what's going to happen. At least it didn't have traumatic results and it was only a bike and not a car. My best of wishes go to you and your grandson, and I hope for a speedy recovery!

How very scary for all involved. Even your husband, and that is why he reacted by being mad. It was just a freak accident, and I bet your grandson will look before getting out again, and the teen will be careful riding on the sidewalk, or when approaching a parked car with people in it. They teach that in driver's ed, so he will have learned a valuable lesson early on. Glad you knew enough firstaid to help.

Thank you Garden... The reason my van was on the street outside my house was because the boys were going to ride in the driveway...but I am sure he will look now...and the boy that hit him will be more carefull too! My husband was frightened just as I was...I just didn't want a confrontation in front of my grandson...but I did understand his anger.... I have EMT training so that helped.... Thank you again.

Thank goodness he is okay. Situations like that are always scary, even worse when you actually see them happen...it is like they happen in slow motion. I am sorry you had go through all of that and I am glad to hear your Grandson is okay. Accidents will happen, it just stinks when they happen to the people we love.

Hi 4... Yes, it was like it was in slow motion...I had just seen the kid on the bike like not even a second before he hit my grandson....I turned around because I knew what was happening.....I saw panic in both of their faces...My grandson hopped up from the ground and was terrified..... He is doing better today....Thank you..

I agree with the others who said Thankfully it was not a car. Someone needs to teach him from this experience, to be a little more careful from now on, and to look out before stepping out to make sure something like this does not happen again. But Glad to hear that he was not hurt that bad, and hopefully he has learned a lesson as well. Sounds like God was on his side this time, and you just need to be Thankful the kid who hit him was so apologetic as well.

You missunderstood what I said...My grandson was in my van with me by his side, in front of our house...He knows not to go on the road side...and he is not allowed to be by the van without me.... He got out of the van on the sidewalk side...and the kid came out of no where and hit him with his bike.....The boy should not have been on the sidewalk riding his bike..... My 6 year old grandson should not have to worry about stepping out onto the sidewalk in front of my home and have to look to see if a teenager or adult is riding their bike down the sidewalk at a high rate of speed... The biker was irresponsible...... My grandson will surely be extra careful now because he can't trust that a teenager wont't be paying attention and ride his bike on the sidewalk instead of the street...where he should have been.. The kid felt bad...but he should not have been riding on the sidewalk to begin with...Hopefully the biker has learned a lesson from all this.... Thank you for your response....

Hi Lakota.... I know the kid didn't mean it but he shouldn't have been riding so fast on the sidewalk of all places.....I was standing looking into the van and I would have thought he would have seen me and slowed down.....I didn't see him until just a split second before he hit my grandson.. He is doing okay today...Thank you..

feona, i am so glad your grandson is alright. it is so lucky that he wasnt hurt worse. things can happen so fast, you dont know what hits you. the teenager sounds like he truely sorry, as you say it a freak accident. i doubt he will be riding down hills very fast anymore. sometimes it takes something to happen to make them realise they need to be careful. i think it was good he stopped and made sure everything was alright because many would just take off. best wishes to you and take care. hopefully your grandson will be better soon

Thank you kay.. He is doing fine.... It did happen so very fast....He stopped right away because my grandson was under his pedal...He said he was sorry a number of times...He looked scared and shaken...I just reassured him it wasn't his fault...Just to be more careful when it comes to riding on the sidewalk...He offered his number but I didn't think is necessary...I did ask his name...I told him all was alright and that he shouldn't worry....

Hi kezabelle...Yes, I should have gotten at least his phone number...I didn't want him to think I was going to tell his parents...but I could have gotten it just to let him know my grandson is okay... I do know the neighbor girl knows him so I may just inquire through her about it... My grandson is doing very well...He was up and about, playing like normal.... Thank you...

I'm glad he didn't jump out in front of a car! I'm also really glad he wasn't hurt any worse than he was. I'm sure the kid that hit him was terrified, but I think it shows good character that he didn't run off or get angry. I hope your grandson heals quickly! At that age, I doubt he'll even notice it and he'll have a 'cool scar'.

I am happy to hear that your grandson is ok. My children have had some similar accidents and I know how worrisome it can be. It also sounds like the teenager that accidently ran into him was a very good kid. I can't think of too many kids, especially now days, that would even stop let alone offer his personal information. A pat on the back for him:)

I do think that he was a good kid...He kept saying he was sorry..He stayed there and didn't leave until I told him to go....I know he must have been scared....I probably should have gotten his number just to let him know that my grandson is okay...The girl that lives around the corner said she knows him, so I may just tell her to tell him everything is alright... Before he left I told him not to worry and that it really wasn't his fault... Thank you...

I am glad to hear he is ok now, he must have been so frightened. I live in NYC and it is illegal to ride a bike on the sidewalk, so if that had happened here he would have gotten into a lot of trouble if it was reported. I wish your little grandson a speedy recovery.

Accidents happen so fast. I am glad that your grandson wasn't hurt any worse. It could have been a lot worse. Just by how sorry the teenage boy was shows that he was honestly just going to fast. That just proves that accidents can happen at any time and without a bit of warning. Hope your grandson feels better.

That's bad how your grandson got hurt the way he did. That kid rideing the bike shouldn't have been going that fast and shouldn't have been on the sidewalk like that. Your heart must have been in your throat when you saw him being dragged the way he was. It's good to know that no other damage was done besides the stiches he has to get poor little guy. I hope he is feeling better soon give him lots of comfort for he will be needing it take care have a good day.

Hi Remembering...thank you.. He is doing better today.... I had just seen the kid just like a split second before he hit my grandson...It was so quick...I was facing into the van and then I saw him out of the corner of my eye....It was too late... I sure hope he doesn't continue to ride that fast, or on the sidewalk ever again...I was parked in front of my house...never thought something like this would have happened... My youngest grandson saw what happened but he is okay to talk about it...He is 4.. Thank you..

Hi Barb.... I know the teen was just as scared as my grandson..I actually felt sorry for him...It just happened all of a sudden and there was no warning... Before my grandson goes to the van if it is parked on the street, he will say, "Look out for speeding bicyclists!" He has recovered nicely...thank you..

Sounds like you have a smart little grandson! It's good that he realizes it can be dangerous on the sidewalk. It would be nice if the kids had a bike lane to ride on rather than sidewalks. We live in the country, so we don't have to worry about that. Our kids had to ride in the yard and my grandchildren ride the 4 wheeler and 3 wheelers in our pastures.
