The egg is oval, it has no starting point nor ending point. your question had been a hard question when i was 5, i could just give contrary answers but when i look into the bible, God had to create animals, birds and there is no mention of egg. So if, you have read the creation, then the hen must have come first.

& If the egg was to come into existence it would have to be laid right?

Here's a Darwinist-genetics answer: The egg came first. A bird that was nearly a chicken genetically produced an ovum that was slightly genetically different. This developed inside the nearly-a-chicken and was laid as THE EGG, that hatched into a chicken. From then on, chicken...egg..chicken..egg.

The hen came first. The Bible says in Genesis 1:21,22; 21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and evry winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. 22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. And, in Genesis 1:25; 25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good. I believe this tells us that God made the animals and then he blessed them with the ability to multiply. But, I'm no theologian. You must form your own opinion.

The hen came first & the rooster sure was happy. If she hadn't then there would have been no egg.
