Drive in theaters. Are they making a come back?

Hi all. I am going to a drive-in theater this evening to see the new "Batman" & "Hellboy 2" movies. Last year I saw about everything at the drive-in. This year I have been too busy to even think about going to see a movie. Are there any in your area? If not would you go if there were? Do you go to them? Do you prefer the drive-in or conventional movie theater?

Drive in movies are the best. I wish I had one close to me so my children could enjoy it. Hard to find in Southern California. There was one in Oceanside but it closed. Sad times.

I love the drive in. It is the only place that a family of 5 can go to for $21. We saw a lot of movies last year. This year, we just don't have the car or the $. OH I saw the Batman one and it is OK. Guess I was expecting more. LOL I saw it on my computer.;)

It was $6 for adults, $2 for children 3-11 and free for those under 3. It is a good way for a family to save money but spend a night out. Then when you factor in the snacks you can bring it gets even better.

It is $7 a adult or over 12 years of age. I was soo sad when my older son turned 13. LOL Under 12 is FREE. We take snacks like microwave pop corn and soda. It makes it a lot cheaper than a theater.

Awwwwwwwww this brings back lots of memories..As a teen ager that was the best, the drive in and a big bag of popcorn brought from home..haha...I do think there is one drive in not to far from our house but i have not been to it yet..I just took my little grandaughter to a movie in the mall this week..I use to love the drive ins and they had the speakers that the teenagers use to steal, that was the day...That has been a few years.I do hope that you enjoy the movie, and have fun...I have heard that the new "Batman " movie is good..I saw one Hellboy and i did not likeit so i will not be going back to see that one but i am looking forward to the new "batman" movie...Let us know if you like it...

Very cool! We don't have any but I would prefer that because of the problem with rude cellphone users who disrupt the public theater...hah, hah, not to mention that at the drive-in I could use my own cell phone. Yes! Without being rude. Also, my car is probably cleaner than a lot of theaters and nobody would be stepping on my toes. Drive-ins Rock!

And your feet will not stick to the floor. LOL It is cool being able to listen to the movie on the radio versus those crappy metal speaker things from the 1950s. There are 2 drive-in theaters in this area. One still has the primitive metal speakers you hang on the window.

I haven't been to the drive in since I saw War of The Worlds back in 2005. The closet one to me is in Warwick, New York. And that's about an hour's worth of driving. It's definitely worth it though. My family tries to make it up there at least once a year, but time gets in the way of that. I'd much rather go to a drive in than sit in a theater.

Wow I can't remember the last time I have even SEEN a drive-thru theater. They tore down the one in my hometown probably almost 10 years ago. I did not know they were making a comeback or even still showing new movies on them. That is very cool though! I would love to go to one! I will have to do some research and see if there are any in my area still. Have fun tonight!!

Lord I haven't been to a drive-in since I was about 4 years old. Then we moved to Kentucky and there isn't one that I am aware of that is close enough to drive to. I would love to see movies at the Drive-in. Better then sitting in a crowded room full of people and trying to see around someones big head and have to try to listen to the movie while someone next to you is mumbling on about the movie or something entirely different. So for me I would find the car more enjoyable and comfy.

Hey thanks I checked out the link. None is really close enough for us to just get up and go but I figured maybe it would be a nice night away form home thing to be able to do before they close up in September. Thanks.

I love drive in theaters. I used to go a lot, but I haven't been to one in years, and the ones that are still around are pretty run down. The last time I went to one, we had a hard time finding a spot that had working speakers. It would be great if they would make a comeback, and do some renovation and upgrades. I'd definitely go.

Yes those old metal hanging speakers are terrible. The 2 drive in theaters in my area broadcast sound on the radio as well as the few remaining crusty metal speakers.

I didn't know that they still had drive-in movies!! I thought they were all gone. I know that there was one in our town but I don't know if they still have it. But you enjoy the movies and have funny. It has been a long time since I have been to a drive-in. Have a good one.

The only drive inn theater that was around here was hit by a tornado about a month ago and the insurance money was not enough to rebuild so we no longer have a drive in to go to. It was one of 3 left in the state I live in so now there are only 2 left. I have only been there once and we didn't get home till about 4:30 in the morning so I prefer a traditional drive inn.

I have a lotta fond memories of my times at the drive-in movies. It has been more years than I care to remember since I've been to one. Don't think there are any in my area now. I despise going to movie theaters. People have just become way too rude & I seem to always get a seat next to the loudest talker in the building or the one who doesn't turn off the cell phone (GRRRRR) Actually, I prefer to stay home & watch Video on Demand on my cable or watch a Netflix movie than go to the theater or drive-in. I can talk when I want, answer the phone if I want, pause the movie when I need a bathroom break. rewind & watch what I missed or didn't understand, etc. PLUS the popcorn & coke is reasonable. :)

We don't have many of them in Denmark - they should be more popular over here, they sound like fun.

Some guy wanted to combine his two interests, movies and cars. He mounted a projector in some trees in his back yard with a radio behind the screen. The 1st "open air" theater was in 1933. RCA provided the sound called "Directional Sound. It was 3 speakers mounted around the screen. Now you can tune the sound on your car radio.

I love to go to drive ins, but there are none in this area. I grew up going to drive ins and it was always a cheap night out for the family. I wish they were making a come back, but I fear they aren't. I hope you enjoy the movies, I want to see those also along with several others....it has been a good summer for movies.
