Do you think homemade icecream is healthier than store bought?

In my house, we have to eat low salt meals. And we're watching our waist lines, so it's also low fat, too. And that leaves no room for traditional desserts like icecream. I've always wondered if homemade icecream could be healthier than store bought. Store bought icecream is loaded with fat and calories. So that's not an option I would even consider. Do you think that homemade icecream could be low fat? Have you ever made low fat homemade icecream? Which low fat ingredients did you use in place of high fat ones?

I have never made homemade ice cream so I don't really know if it is healthy. I have watched some cooking shows in the television that shows how to make ice cream at home and usually for fruit flavored ice cream they use real fresh fruits. Because the ingredients are fresh so I think it is really healthy. When I get the chance to get the right equipment maybe I could try making it here hehe.

I've always thought there might be a way to use a lower fat cream instead of the full fat stuff they use in store brands. And the ingredients would be fresher as you say and no preservatives! That's a big deal for me.

They usually have a lot of healthier alternatives for most ingredients such as cream. Maybe some research would help hehe. I learn most stuff from watching cooking segments on the television. Some books might have information on these too.

When I made ice cream, the low-fat version were often icy and not as good as low fat, store bought ice cream. But, on the good side, you have a lot more control over what you put in homemade ice cream than you do in store bought ice cream. You don't have anything artificial and you can put as much or as little sugar as you want. But, for me, it's easier buying a Skinny Cow or some other low-fat ice cream treat than to make it.

I'm going to have to check the sodium on that. Sodium is a big issue for us too. Non-negotiable!

I'm always seeing those homemade icecream makers on the QVC. Thought I might want to invest into one of those. I'm sure there are low fat/low sodium icecream recipes available.

Not only do we have total control over the ingredients we use if the ice cream's home-made; it just tastes better! Every time I make it, I wonder why anybody would every buy it from a store. Of course, it takes hours to make it and a whole lot to clea up after it, and Carvel becomes an occasional treat. If you want it to be really good, though, make yur own!

I honestly do not know. We have made ice cream at home- but it was with this new ball thing. And it had sugar in it. Why not buy the low-fat version of ice cream from the store- they are better for you.

Most definitely! Much of the ice cream sold in the stores is vegetable based and uses artificially flavored. When you make homemade, you can include the ingredients that you want and know what is in it.

I would think it would be healthier because you are picking the ingredients. When you go out for ice cream or purchase it in a store, you don't have any say with what goes in it. Meaning there are chemicals that are used in our food to enhance things like flavor. I think there is organic ice cream and that might be something you would be interested in. So try googling some recipes on low fat homemade ice cream.

I wish I could still eat that way! After my baby was born, anything with fat as an ingredient made me fat. Not so big on that idea!

Well, I'd made one before. It really taste great. Home made ice cream are better becuase it's more healthier and more affordable. You can save out of it. I just spent it blow a hundred pesos and guess what. It made about 15-30 servings. I just used milk and a bunch of cookies. I prefer home made ones than buying from stores.

Ice Cream - Home made
You are absolutely right here my dear-these rosy packages you see dont wrap contents that are as clan or as healthy as home made items-if you can make your ice cream at home, go ahead and never by those made from the stores.

I have an ice cream maker and the recipes I use are full of fat!! It is the best ice cream every, but I use heavy cream in it and oooohhhh is it good. I haven't made ice cream in a long time. We are also trying to watch our eating habits. I have bought fat free fudge pops, frozen yogurt, and skinny cow ice cream snacks. They are just as good and low in fat and calories.

I make ice cream, and I use 1% milk instead of whole milk, and light cream instead of heavy cream. I also reduce the amount of sugar I use- about 3/4 cup instead of a whole cup. I actually like it better that way than doing the high fat version. It tastes lighter and doesn't lack any of the flavor. It is definitely healthier to make your own because there are a lot of additives and preservatives in ice cream, especially the flavored ones. My ice cream maker came with a recipe book with lots of options, like frozen yogurt, sherbet and fruit sorbet, so I make something different once in a while. This way I can enjoy dessert without guilt.

We sometimes make ice cream at home with our ice cream maker. I wouldn't say it is lower in fat, due to the fact that you have to use a lot of cream in it, and also a lot of sugar that can rack up the calories. But I like the fact that I know there are no preservatives going into it.

i think so because in the home mades we generally dont add the preservatives which are chemicals so, its more natural and healthy when compared to shop ice creams. i am not pretty sure but this can be one of the explanations.

Homemade icecream can be self made and is added with salt rock which concetrates everything to a rather faster pace of the ice cream which makes it lowfat
