Hi all, I was just wondering have you ever given anyone a negative rating / feedback here on mylot? I am just curious to see what reasons people think are valid to do this with, some I can understand like if the responses / comments left were rude etc... but sometimes peoples ratings change and they do not know why as nothing bad was said etc.... Please share your thoughts and opinions with me

Perhaps someone is being critical of your grammar. I'll be honest, when I see a paragraph 20 lines long with no capitalization and no punctuation, I typically won't even bother reading it. Sometimes it's hard to follow the line of thought driving the response, so it's often easier to just disregard it. If you answer a lot of discussions without good grammar or spelling, someone might be nailing your ratings for it.

It does make you wonder though, why sometimes your rating goes down when you do not post rudly or off topic etc, as I have also noticed my ratings drop and I am not sure why at all!

I will admit I have given a few people on mylot negative feedback even though I do not do it very often, and usually I will only give a person negative feedback if they response to me in a rude or insulting manner,or if I see that they have responded to my fiance or anyone else in a rude or insulting manner, and in those cases I feel that they deserve the negative rating, and I feel like I am doing the right thing by giving people like that negative feedback.

I would too if a person replied to me in a rude or insulting way, as that is not nice at all, I think even if I noticed a reply to one of my friends discussions that was also rude and / or insulting I would also then too as a way of sticking up for my friends!

The ratings system is an unofficial way of keeping people on topic, and promoting responses that have substance. To give examples of the types of things that I'll usually notch a - rating for, I'll use this discussion. At hand, we have the question: "Have you ever given anyone a negative rating/feedback here on mylot" If someone is deeply thoughtful enough to leave an answer "uh, yes" or go and comment "me too" to everyone else who added something thought provoking, they're getting some negative ratings. If someone goes off on a tirade about what type of four letter words apply to the people who make or deserve negative ratings, then again, likely going to be a negative rating from me. I don't like to give negative ratings to people with lower post counts. I'm still a lower post count, but I've been around long enough to know how things work. You'll get better results from leaving them a message about what they're missing than just flat out negative ratings. So, personally, have I? Absolutely. I'm a firm believer that you can be on the opposite side of the fence, and still have a civil conversation about anything. When people start getting rude and throwing obscenities or the like, it's not anything that's useful to the topic at hand, so what's the point?

Thanks for your reply - That all makes sense. It is great to see how and why the negative rating is given just so I know how it should be used etc... I either do not rate or give positive when I think it is needed.

Hi Mummybec, I will plus rate all that respond to me unless extremely rude or upsetting and then I don't bother rating at all rather than a negative, I have only ever given too negatives and that was when someone really was nasty in a friends discussion with no reason at all other than to be nasty and the other was when someone put a moneymaking link only into the middle of one of my discussions and had also done this to every discussion they had responded to. Ellie :D

Yeah that sounds like me either not rating at all or only giving a positive rating! That was very rude to put a moneymaking link into one of your discussions! How annoying that would have been...

I know that I have rated people negatively if I felt their response was offensive to me, or that it was offesnively aimed towards someone else on their own discussion. I also rate negatively if I feel that their response to me was not "serious" like I have asked. I do do this lightly though and only to people who only write one word or sentence answers. You can write a sentence or even two but if your response isn't serious then I'll rate you negatively, then again this is ONLY on my own discussion that I will do this on. I do do this lienantly and will also try to see if I can respond to something they have discussed and rate them positively. I don't go through and attack.

Good day! I was given a negative rating for a discussion I started when I was new in myLot. I was under the impression that since I joined a S*X interest group, that I can post anything about it. So, I asked if they were good in you know what... One mylotter replied and gave a me a negative rating. I dont know why but I guess it is ultimately their prerogative. Have fun!

Well, when people's ratings change on here, it could be for a number of reasons. Sometimes it is because they posted things on here that are against the TOS, or it could be that they posted things inappropriate for a lot of others, or sometimes they might have posted something here that others find controversial and do not agree with. It could really be a number of things though. All I can say, is that I do not tend to let it affect me as a whole, and just do the Best I can. I know you are never going to please all of the people on here no matter how hard you try.

Once, accidentally, I went to give them a positive rating and accidentally hit the wrong little symbol. So I found 2 more of their posts and rated them positive. Mostly I don;t see people who wander off topic too much, so I have never felt the need to give a negative rating.

mummybec mylot says do not give negative ratings to anyone just because you do not agree with them, only if someone has responded with a rude commennt or was really flaming, but if the only gripe is that you do not agree with them do not hit negative as we all have a right to our own opinion and anyone can agree or mpt birt do it with respect. Some have taken advantage of the negative to get back at someone whom they did not agree with.it happened to me overnight my ten was taken down to a 6. I now have it up to an 8 again.

That makes sense too.... everyone is entitled to thier own opionion. I have seen peoples stars change a heap over night etc that is more the reason I started this discussion as I know mine has changed in the past quickly too!

Yes I have rated some comments or topics negatively. I've also reported a couple that were against TOS rules. If someone is overly cruel, mean or so forth to a topic I'm certainly not going to give them a plus for it. I know my star has dropped before, although I really could care less, and I'm sure its because someone rated me alos. That is what its there for, so I use it when needed.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.... I have not seen any comments or replies that needed reporting before... but it is nice in a way to know you can in case you are deeply hurt and / or offended by what someone else has written wither to or about you.

I have, actually rated some as negative. Only the ones who I didn't agree with , mostly on moral issues. I am pretty new here, and still don't understand anything about how the ratings system works. I hope to eventually learn how everything works on here but I am really enjoying it so far.

Actually that is not how you are supposed to use the rating system. Negative ratings are for people who do not positively contribute to the posting. If I may, here is the FAQ about the rating system, to read the specific part, see the question "What if I disagree with someone? Should I give that post a negative rating?" http://www.mylot.com/o/faq/faq17.aspx#3

Good question! I don't give negative ratings unless someone has been rude, combatative or antagonistic. So maybe once. I prefer to not rate. I mostly rate positive, although my ratings have dropped down and went back up so I know that I have been a victim of the "rating game" or the - rating game and it isn't very fun

I have also not used the negative ratings before - but have not seen a need to either. Of course if someone was extreemly rude and or hurtful in thier response I may do it then. I have only ever given postive feedback too

no, i just take it as their feelings about whatever subject we were talking about. i feel like everybody have their opinion and i'm not going to agree with them at all times. so i just look over them and their responses or discussions. some people give bad ratings because they are just hating on that person or just to be childish or hatefull. i've been lucky so far i haven't seen any discussions that i would rate negative. i don't respond to the negative ones anyway.

That is right everyone has a right to say how they feel / express thier opinions on any discussion. That is good you have not yet had to give a negative rating...

I think I have left a negative rating once, I cannot remember why. I know it must have been because someone was being rude to me or not paying any attention to posts and just saying something completely unrelated, which I think is rude and really annoying too.

I don't often give feedback, but when I do it's always positive. If a discussion is distasteful or lackluster I simply ignore it and move on. So to answer your question, NO, I have never given negative feedback before. Although sometimes I'm really tempted to. But I don't want to give negative feedback because I might get karma.

hmm i would like to know why some give negative, is it because dont accept other peoples difference of opinion? maybe just not like people to give their own views/opinions and being too petty and childish by being so mean to give negative i just only yesterday went from red star down to yellow and even now i still do not understand why.. As far as i know, i did ntohing wrong and i certainly not violated any of mylot rules to get bad feedback

i been told jealousy but that would be very stupid so no i dont know why either.. anyway.. i past caring, if people dont like difference of opinion, and i not change me for others so.. i mostly concentrate on getting my posts up so i can at least copy and paste haha.. take care

I don't believe that I should ever give a bad rating unless the comment was just out of this world, rude, or just written down to get points and has nothing to do with the subject at hand. I am very lenient on giving positive ratings because someone took the time to answer your question and took up some of their time to do so, so I thank them for that by giving positive feedback and ratings. So, no I have not given negative ratings yet, but I am willing to if any of those top things are ever brought up.

Thanks for your reply, I feel the same unless it is an extreemly rude, insesitive or hurtful comment then there really is not much need to give a negitive!
