When should puppies be taken away from their mother?

I have 4 Minature-Dachshund puppies that are almost 3 weeks old. I know it is way to early right now to let their new owners take them. When is the average age they are taken away from their mothers? Thanks

I agree with the above posters, 8-12 weeks is the normal. No puppies should ever be removed from their mother and littermates before 8 weeks of age as they learn crucial things about being a dog between 6-8 weeks but the longer they get to stay with mom & littermates the better and the easier it will be for the pups to adapt to their new homes later on. I would never even consider taking a pup younger than 8 weeks and I would definately prefer to wait until 12 weeks.

9 weeks or older is the best. They may be weaned by the time they're 6 weeks, but they still have alot of social skills that they can learn from their mothers (such as bite inhibition, peeing outdoors, and other behavior lessons. I wouldn't get a puppy from any breeder that was trying to sell one earlier.

My friend just got a minature dachshund puppy. He is a little over six weeks. they say the average is eight to twelve weeks. but not under six weeks, as long as they are able to eat on their own, and not have to rely on the mommy that will be good. I know they are cute.

Rusty - Our golden retriever at one year.
I believe the standard is 8 to 12 weeks, after their 2nd worming. We promised to worm ours for the second time when he was 7 weeks old so the breeder let us take him. I am happy to say he is healthy and very active still.

It's important to wait 8 weeks before separating a puppy from its mother. Puppies learn important doggy social skills during the first 8 weeks.
