Will an Exporter need brokers?

Hi all, My uncle have a business for only exporting nuts to oversea(no local retailer). He asked me should he completely depend in brokers ? and if he want to find his individual customers what kind of marketing should he do? well, i really don't know how to answer those questions. As an owner of fast-food shop , all i know is to advertised in newpaper, Tv,... and i never deal with brokers before... all answers will be appreciated!
