with all the internet crimes going on these days, many of us have started fearing for our safety. we think twice before registering on any site, and a lot more before uploading any personal pics. many of us use alias. are you fearful of your privacy? and hide your real identity/name on all sites? or don't you care?

Yes, I do take some care to hide my real name on the 'net. Then again, it also depends on the context of the site. In my personal blog, I have my name there, but that's because my personal blog is used as a sample to clients who hire me to work on their website. If they don't see my real name, I wouldn't be trustworthy at all. However, at most other sites, I don't reveal my real name. There are also many other ways to browse anonymously, such as with the Tor Project - http://www.torproject.org/. Tor lets you hide your IP by relaying traffic to other networks who volunteer to relay Tor traffic. Works very well if you want to mask your IP.

hmmm...i have always wondered...can't you mask ur IP using such sites to register on sites that do not allow more than one account per unique IP address?

You have made a valid point there. Our identity could be vulnerable before vicious minds. We never know. I always make sure not to give out my personal bank account details, phone number and addresses. I think a little of brains can actually make us safer. We cannot live without internet and the utility of it undeniable so why not be wise in its usage. Thanks.

I never show my identity in any site. It also depends on the content of the site. If it was a social networking site, then I hide my identity. If it was any other site that offers freelancing works, then I hive my original details..and they need them too. I never reveal my identity if it was a blog, or any other site.I have a separate mail account for the online registrations. So whenever I had to register at any site, or if it asks my mail id, I give this mail id alone. I never use this for any other personal use. With increase in cyber crimes, I think it is always better to be safe on internet. It is good to hide the identity and also most importantly the bank details.

Hello boxieblue, I am a little bit afraid to reveal all online. Most of the time, I will use alias. I don't use my real name online. If I need to register for something, I might use my real name but not all the info that I give are accurate. I try to hide as much as I could, as long as I could.

yeah. I usually use aliases when signing up to some websites, only some official ones where i use the real name, and I use different password for my emails and places where I signed up. sometimes I forgot the password but that's no worry for me since I always remember my email password i can always ask new password or password reset for my account.

A few years ago I may have been a bit skeptical about doing business online but not today. Now I run my business entirely online and do business transactions every day. I am more concerned with spamming and try to protect my accounts from spammers more than worry about my identity. I have had my credit card declined for suspicious activity and have had to call in to the credit card company to resolve it but it was always me doing the transactions. So I would say my credit card company is really watching out for their clients like me. I do take security seriously and change my passwords frequently.
