What Do You Do to Keep Yourself Warm During Winter?

Fireplace - Or Heater

It will just be a couple of months and winter season is here. I am originally from a tropical country where there is just summer and rainy season. I am a little bit excited to experience winter. There are some people I spoke with that hates winter because of the shoveling and there are those who loves it because they don't like summer. I am not sure if i can easily adjust to the weather so I would like to ask someone who knows, what to do to keep myself warm during the winter aside from wearing thick clothing. Do You use a heater or do you use an old fashioned fireplace?Just Curious, SFC

I'd prefer to have a fireplace; but, unfortunately, my house doesn't have a fireplace. I do have a gas space heater in my den which keeps me all warm & snuggly. I loved it when my hubby was still here with me & we would cuddle together & be warm as toast. I hope we have fall between summer & winter. Fall gives your body time to begin to gradually adjust to the colder weather. You didn't say how long you have been here but it takes about one good cold winter for your body to begin to adjust. Best wishes to you this winter.

I was born and raised in Iowa. Spent some time in Minnesota. How did i deal with it??? I moved to Colorado where the snow and cold is not as much. Dry climate here also. Humidity makes cold colder and hot hotter. Love it here.

We have central heating and we keep the temperature up to 70 degree F in the winter. I know that they want us to turn it down but with me and my bronchitis, being a singer, I would rather have a high heating bill then laryngitis and singing like a frog. When I go outside, I will wear my slacks, a sweater and I might have a cardigan on as well, under my slacks I will have on socks. I do not have stockings or pantyhose because they become clammy. I will have a woolen scarf around my nose and a toque that covers my ears. If it is a Sunday, i will wear a pair of winter weight panty hose. And I will always wear boots and gloves or mittens. I will wear a coat or a jacket that goes down at least part way down my hips.

winter - pic winter
I live in south Florida so it never really gets cold here even in the winter months. I wish it got colder because i love the cold! I think it feels wonderful and it makes going for long walks with my dog real nice because i don't get all hot and sweaty! But we keep the house real cold and so when I do get cold which can be in winter or even outside of winter... I will use a blanket or have a class of hot chocolate. That is always nice when your cold.

It is usually better to wear several layers of clothing than thick clothing. There are 2 reasons for this. one, warm air collects between the layers, and two, when you go inside, or the weather gets warmer, a layer or two can be removed. A fireplace is not a good method of heating a room. In this country, they are mostly for show. Central heat is best, but a circulating heater will usually work well, also.

My house uses propane for heat and it's very costly but even though I have that it's still cold so I bought space heaters as a supplement. I wear long sleeves everyday in the winter time plus layers, it's no fun having a cold or being cold! Even though it's freezing most days, I LOVE THE WINTER and I don't mind shoveling or driving in the snow, it's actually alot of fun and I could not live in a state that did not have snow in the winter.

Hi Muelitz, Welcome to Canada, I've lived here all my life. I hope you will enjoy winter and not experience too much of the negative aspects of it. It will certainly be different for you but dress warmly and you will be okay. I have an oil furnace for heating my house but it may be expensive whatever type of heat you decide to go with. You will have some time to adjust to the cold as we still have the fall coming up. You probably won't get any snow before late November or December. January, February and March are usually our coldest months, and it should start to warm up again in April. Take some brisk walks as it gets colder, but don't wear a lot of warm clothes when you are walking. I am 68 years old now and have been retired for a few years. I don't care as much for winter as I did when I was younger, but I have no desire to move to a warmer climate. This is a beautiful country, enjoy your time here. Blessings.

It is very important to keep your feet warm, even when you are inside the house. That's because once your feet are cold, your whole body is going to get cold. So, wear thick socks inside and good, warm winter house slippers. Watch tv wrapped in an afghan. Fix a cup of hot tea or hot chocolate in the evenings. If you have the luxury of having a fireplace, that's really nice because it can often keep a small room very toasty warm. When we lived up north, we had a family room with a fireplace and it was so nice to watch tv in there in the evenings and burn a fire. Put an extra blanket or 2 on the bed at night. Plus, I used to put a blanket folded in half across the bottom of the bed where my legs would get a extra couple of layers of warmth at night, to keep those toes warm. Of course, when you go outdoors, cover your head. A huge percentage of your body heat leaves through your head, so try to keep it covered when you are outdoors. Wrap a nice knit scarf around your neck and chest area to keep out the cold. These 2 things really help when you are outside. We live in FL now and don't have to deal with winters anymore. I didn't hate them, but my husband sure did. He is ecstatic that he doesn't hardly ever have to deal with cold weather anymore. Good luck and take care.

As this discussion is 4 months old that makes it July when you posted this. Why would you be so worried about winter when it still isn't here and won't be here for some months to come. It is now November and we still haven't gotten winter, at least not here in Canada. I am assuming you moved to Canada or to United States where winters can be bitterly cold. The only advice I have for you is to wear gloves and boots and a sweater and a good warm coat and a hat and scarf. We Canadians really bundle ourselves up good as it gets bitterly cold and without the works we wouldn't be going outside much. As far as heat, we in Canada, pretty much all have gas furnaces as there is no way we could survive without them. I also have a fireplace but it is more for appearance than for warmth as it is an electric one and doesn't provide much heat. Alrighty then, talk to you later, your friend Chris.

I heat my house with a propane furnace. If its a bit chilly I occasionally turn on the electric heater but not often. My parents heat their house with propane AND a fireplace. Work has a boiler.

I hate winter. I hate snow. And I hate cold. I can never get or keep warm in the winter. Oh sure, we have a good whole house furnace. But this house is not well insulated. And the curtains are not heavy ones that can keep out the cold. I love going barefoot, but the floors are always so cold in winter. I usually layer clothing. And stay indoors as much as possible. And turn up the heat to 78 degrees and hope it reaches 72.

I grew up in the north in the US, but lived in Texas and Florida for over half of my lifetime. When my hubby retires, we're definitely going south!!!

I moved from Michigan to Florida to specifically get away from the freezing cold winters! When I lived up in Michigan though whenever you go outside definitely wear a bunch of layers. A scarf works wonders as well, so try not to forget that! When I was inside, my house had central air/central heat, so we always had the heat on. It always warmed my bedroom up really fast so you could find me spending most of my time in there cuddled under a blanket. My house didn't have a fireplace but I think it's a nice thing to have if you live in a northern state or country. :o) Good luck with your first Winter! Hopefully you won't freeze TOO much!

Actually it will be more helpful for you to dress with different layers than just one thick and warm thing. During the winter you won't be outside only, and every where you enter it will be nice and warm. If you don't have layers to take off you will be too hot. YOu should make sure that you have gloves and a hat, because that's where you will feel the cold. A nice scarf will also be appreciated in the colder days :) Most people in the cities have their homes heated centrally. Some use oil, some gas and some electricity, but all those keep the houses nice and warm - I don't like it too warm but my in laws do, they keep the temperature so high I often have to wear shorts at home or I'll be too hot. I can see by your profile that you are living more or less close to me and all I can tell you is that yes.. you are in for an experience:) But winters haven't been that bad for some time. SHoveling is actually a nice exercise and I don't mind it too much. But you might have to re-learn how to walk hehehehe At least I did, and do every winter. Because we come from places where there is no snow or ice we tend to walk in a more sliding manner which doesn't help when the streets are icy and slippery. Just be careful walking around and avoid big patches of ice. Living in TOronto, or Mississauga you will find that it will only be cold for that little bit that you are actually in the street, because even the buses and streetcars are heated so you might actually feel warm there.THe same with stores and shops. That's why it is important to wear different layers of clothing that you can take out or put in depending on where you are. Depending on how the temperature is set in your home you might not even need a very warm cover in your bed.I got a really warm one when I came to here and never used it because it felt too hot. WInter has it's nice things too. I made a snowman for the first time in my life i was already almost 30 years old... and I still had fun LOL If yuo enjoy skating you will find ice skating a treat. I do:) Personally I don't like winter much because I like to walk outside without having to bundle up too much, but when I think about it it's not as bad as I thought :) Have fun this winter :):)

I love winter because the world looks so clean and fresh after a good snow, but I don't like the cold anymore because of health issues. Now for us to stay warm, we have oil heat and so downstairs you still get cold, so we also use a fireplace if it is REALLY cold and also space heaters. I am just hoping that I can afford the fuel for the furnuse this year. I add nice heavy blankets also to the bed.

I live in the UK, and for the last couple of years our winter has not really kicked in proper until around december time when it has become really cold. We usually have the central heating on constantly, but our heating costs are rising so fast over here at the minute that it is going to be hard to afford to have it on all the time. I reckon that this year I will be either knitting us all thick fluffy jumpers to wear inside or buying loads of fleeces and jumpers.

I am from the place where winter is most liked seson and our land is known as the paradise on earth due to the greens everywhere which is the gift of winters,to keep ourselves warm we have to be very carefull b,coz we have a fire pot inside our cloths it will be very difficult for you so I will suggest you the very easy method.Yes I am talking about the "KEHWA" the tea for coldest season.I will write you the method of making Kehwa .Boil 3 cups of water add 5to 7 sticks of pure saffaron 5-6 minced almonds 2 cardmons a little green tea double sugar what you usually take and boil untill it remains 2 cups only.It is a full dose for you and your partner and you never feel cold.

Hi muelitz! I'm from NY and we have some very cold winters! I don't especially like the cold weather. It's hard to outside when the wind is blowing right through you and the temperature is in the teens or below. You can bundle up all you want but it's still hard to protect yourself from the cold. I don't think you're going to like much. It get's pretty cold where you live too. I wish I had a fireplace but I live in an apartment where we don't have one. In fact it gets so cold in my apartment that I have to turn on the oven to try to warm it up because we don't get enough heat. I wear sweat pants and sweat shirt to bed. As much as I don't like being really hot I don't like being really cold. Sometimes you can be so cold that it hurts. Snow is really pretty to watch when it comes down, but after that it is miserable to walk in. Wait and see how you like it. You just might!
