Kids will be kids

Last night we had to take our two year old son to the hospital, after his brother, shut his thumb in his bedroom door. He was in alot of pain as he would not stop crying. When i told him that we were going to see a doctor to make his thumb better he kept asking if it was Dr Who we were going to see. By the time we got to the hospital he had calmed down and after a dose of pain killer he was full of the joys of spring. You would have thought there was nothing wrong with him. But he did not want to co-operate he refused to be weighed and all i heard when his dad took him into be x-rayed was him shouting "NO" His dad did presude him to have the x-ray in the end and it turned out that he had fractured his thumb. So he now has his thumb all stapped up. Are your children the same do they seem fine by the time they get to the hospital after injuring themsleves? Do they refuse to co-operate?.

Hearing about somebody closing a door on somebody's finger reminds me of closing a car door on a finger and that really, really hurts! My kids are teenagers now and I am lucky to say that neither of the two ever got their fingers hurt that way! Gee, I am glad to have been speared that one!

You are very lucky its not something i want to go through again in a hurry. My seven year old son was distraught at hurting his little brother so had to calm him down as well as dealing with my two year old. Thank you for your response.

Dr. Who. LOL When my son fell off the porch and cut open the back of his head we took him to the ER. Head wounds quit bleeding pretty quick and he's got a really high pain thresh hold so while we're in the ER he's squirming and wanting to go play. I can name other instances where he's gotten injured and wanted to play. Yeah, I know, weird kid. LOL

LOL trouble was there was nothing for him to play with so he had to make up his own game. So he ended up running round the waiting room pretending to be a car. He has not been to the hospital before so the only Doctor he knows is Dr Who. Thanks for your input.

I haven't had to take my two year old to the emergency room (yet), but it seems that two is a good age for refusing to cooperate. After all, they like to do things their way! I get that a lot anyway.

I know the feeling they just want their own way all the time. Thank you for your response.

I know what you mean,my grandaughter tumbled down the last few stairs twice!!and it was all becuse she was hurrying too much, she didnt want to go and get checked over, but her Mum made her go,she is six,and although there wasnt anything wrong it was better to be safe than sorry, but also my daughter felt embarassed taking her for the second time,as she said the staff maybe thought there was something a little strange about it all, which of course there wasnt in any way.

I agree it is better to be safe than sorry. My partner also panicked abit about taking our son because he was worried that we would get accused of hurting him. Am glad that your grandaughter was ok. Thank you for sharing.

Hi, sorry to say you are just beginning your emergency room runs with little ones have accidents. When my son was small I didn't have too much trouble with him cooperating. He was more upset before the emergency room visit, I guess because he thought he was going to get into trouble for getting injured. When he was in grade school, I had to take him to the emergency room once because some other kid poured something in his eyes, I'm not sure what it was but his eyes were burning, they flushed his eyes out for about an hour, then he was running in the play ground and another child ran into him and his front teeth came through his lip, OUCH and another time, I was at my sister's house, the children were told not to play in the basement. Well he came upstairs crying along with the other children with a dart plunged in his chest. My nephew was playing with his father's darts they were told not to go in the basement, my son was looking for all of the other children, went into the basement just as my nephew was throwing the dart, and it hit him. OUCH OUCH OUCH. That was really scary for me, because when I saw him the dart was still in his chest. I am glad your son will be okay, I am sure that really hurt him. Our little angels

i don't have a kid yet... but i can relate to what you are telling about your son because i see that kind of incidents often in the doctor's waiting room and emergency room... yes, kids will be kids... at one time, they will be crying loudly after they get injured... but not long after that, they will smile again... it is so funny when i see them do that... take care and have a nice day...

I have to say it was good to see him smile again as no parent likes seeing their children in pain. Thanks for your input.

Hi little one, I guess this is normal reaction of a kids..LOL! I have seen a lot of children shouting in the hospital during their check up... But, I am sure after that experienced, he will realized that the pain will subside and it is helpful to be seen and treated by the doctor..LOL!

I am sure that in the future he will now realise that the doctor was trying to help him. Just glad to have him all sorted. Thanks for your response.

hi littleone My son is all grown up now but when he was little he was always calmed down by the time we got to the hospital.one time he cut his thumb badly with an exacto knife and had to have some stitches.but the doctor was smart he deadened his thumb first then stitched it so my son didnt really cry at all. He never did really refuse to cooperate except when he was four and had the flu and the doctor had the devil of a time giving him an injection. He bellowed so loud you could have heard him for a block, dr.so and so is a mean old doctor. the doctor was probably about thirty if that, but he really did laugh at that.

Hi Hatley Its good that the doctor saw the funny side. The doctor we saw did not do much to make my son feel relaxed but the nurses made up for that as they were very good with him. Thanks for your response.

OuchThat sounds like it really hurt. I have a 3 year old and he has had his fingers shut in a thing or two but never to the point to where we had to take him to the hospital. My son does not co-operate at all. I have to take him because his ear was bleeding and he wouldn't let the lady wash his ear out. So yes my kid can be stubborn!
3 Aug 08
You poor son. Children can be very stubborn when they want to be and it always seems to be at the wrong time. Thanks for your input.
