Bad timing...

I was summoned for jury duty for this week and it really annoys me because I was out of work for over a year and had plenty of time on my hands and would loved to have served on jury duty because it would have been interesting. Instead, they wait until I finally have a job that doesn't pay a whole lot so missing work is not a good thing. I tried to get out of it and they denied me so I have to go in at 7:30 tomorrow morning. Why so early when court doesn't even start until 8:30 or 9? Well, I'll take something to read and a notebook to write. I wish I could take my laptop but I don't know how the security people would handle that so I thought it best to just take simple things to do. Hopefully, they will dismiss me after tomorrow so I don't have to miss any more days. Has jury duty ever caused you real problems? Like I said, I wouldn't mind if it didn't cost me money because having been in the legal field for over 22 years, I find being on a jury interesting.

I was called to jury duty twice. The last time was just a few weeks ago and luckily it was for federal court and I only had to call in and the case I was assigned to got settled so I never had to go. The first time I was on county court and it was Thanksgiving week. I had to go down there 4 days - not Thanksgiving and sit from 7:30 to 4:30 every day. The bad thing was although my company paid me - we had holidays on Wednesday and Friday - so everyone got a paid day off and I had to sit waiting to be called for jury duty and I had to pay for a babysitter. If you are a stay at home mom you can get excused because you have to care for your child but if you work you can't eventhough I tried to explain that the daycare was closed the day after Thanksgiving. So it was not a fun experience for me.

The reason they want you in so early, I think, is to do a security screening before they'll let you inside and to assign you to a locker, maybe? It's my only guess. I'm glad I can't serve because I can't hear well but I do wish that weren't the reason though but I'm afraid of convicting someone especially when there's so many innocent people out there. That's one of my biggest fears actually, is being picked up and charged with something that I didn't do then having to go to jail. I'd be a basket case! But then again, who wouldn't? lol

Yes there are quite a few people that have been on trial and sent to prison that are innocent however, there's quite a few that aren't so innocent. However, I can't agree more about the gangsters. I don't understand how they think their way of life is the right way. It makes no sense because no street corner belongs to anybody except the government. Makes me wonder about their mind set but, not their raising because a parent could be the best parent in the world but doesn't mean their child will come out right. Kids have a mind of their own and peer pressure is tough enough to stand up against these days in which a lot of times will get them killed. So I can't blame the parent all the time but yes there are times when we can but not all the time. I don't know how that one juror got her way of thinking but she should'nt have been on duty to begin with. I think I would've held out till she came around for it was obvious that she didn't have all her marbles in hand. Geeze... he couldn't convict himself?? What was she thinking? I'm scratching my head on that one. As for cops, I thank a cop every chance I get for the work that they do because I know if it weren't for them, we'd be living in HELL because of the criminals. Yes they do put their lives in jeapardy for our safety however, they're not perfect and do make mistakes for they're just as human as you and I are but still, they put themselves out in the line of fire all in the name of order and safety. So yes I agree, cops are great to have around but too, they're not perfect and do make mistakes which is understandable because they are human.

I haven't been on a jury at all. If I was summoned I would gladly go. My husband has been called to jury duty. He had to go in I think it was three days straight he had to go in. Yes, it is a shame that they didn't call on you while you were off of work. But that is how things normally happen.

I've only served once in the last 25 years and I think I only stayed two days. I was actually picked for one jury, but the case settled right away and I was dismissed thankfully. Yes, I did get a stipend, but as I remember, the check took quite a while to arrive. Since then I've been summoned twice, but being a mom, I was legally entitled to be exempt. I'm also a paralegal and there was a time when that alone exempted me, but now the courts take everyone for jury duty, including lawyers. Good luck tomorrow and definitely bring a book and a big bottle of water. It could be a long day, or, hopefully, you will be dismissed in one day.

I always thought that not matter what type of job you work the have to excuse you for that. I have never had jury duty but I thought that you still got paid not matter what type of job you work. I see not from reading your discussion that I was wrong.

I've never had a job that paid for jury duty. I know there are companies that do so but I've never worked for any. It does make me think that I want to create a juror fund for my own employees when my company begins to have employees so that I can pay their salary during jury duty. I want to do that for even part time employees because I know how hard it is to be a part time hourly employee and not have benefits or paid holidays or sick days. It's really hard to pay bills when you have to take off when you're sick or if there's a holiday and the office is closed and you can't earn those hours. I guess I don't want my employees to go through a lot of what I have. Especially if they are good employees.

Sound like your a great boss that would be something that all jobs need to have. That would be really nice, you already know first had what it's like not to get paid for days you have to take off.

hi whimsystoryteller I was just excussed from jury duty for'health reasons as I have a leg in a brace, a bad shoulder and besides I have shingles.I am a young 81 lol. Knowing the courtroom where I would have to have gone it has a zillion steps and I walk with a quad cane. so it would have taken me so much time climbing those steps they would be half through. and god forbid if I should fall as I have an artifical shoulder joint in my left shoulder due to a fall and bad fracture two years ago. i was afraid they might not excuse me but my son said oh you couldnt do that, you are in no shape, well okay I may be 81 but Iam still alive here.lol

You sound like a sprightly 81 and I know it must be very hard to be limited by your health with your type of attitude and zest for life. I think it's good you were excused but I'm so glad you are so on top of things that you have joined us here at myLot. We need people like you to inspire the rest of us to be just as active and lively when we get to be your age. I plan to invite you to be my friend and I certainly hope you will accept.

It has been quite a few yrs. since I last was summoned to do Jury Duty. I got a notice from my Boss to where I was able to get out of it, but I am sure I could have gotten one from my Doctor as well if I would have had too. I actually think it would be interesting having to serve on Jury Duty. The only problem is that they do not pay much, so I would hope for me, I would have a Vacation day from work coming so I could get paid from both. Well, don't fret it too bad. It could be something you will enjoy.

I just served on a jury a few weeks ago. It cause me problems as I am the only person that know show to the payroll/billing for my job. Lots of angry people if payroll wasn't done. I ended up gettin choosen and the first day was spent from 8-4 at the court house then working from 5-9pm!! In my experience we didnt have to go in that early. THe judge didnt have us come until 9 one day and 9:30 the next. But it's different everywhere I supposed.

I went in this morning for jury duty and found out I could get a postponement, which I did for two months. I had to be there at 7:30 in the morning. At least the postponement gives me time to prepare financially and have things worked out with my workplace. This was just too sudden for me and work so I like having the time to get everything prepared.
