Hello and welcome to Mylot....I hope you enjoy being here. Well if you get a dog that is still a puppy, you can raise it with the cat and the puppy will learn to live with your cat, and learn not to bother it, but if you get a grown dog, unless its been raised around cats, it will not get along with your cat, because most cats and dogs don't get along very well. So its best to get a puppy and raise it with your cat, so there won't be any problems, they will be used to each other.

hahaha it is going to be the other way around lool cats are streetwise fighters lool.. i think it be the dog going off cowarding and whimping hehe he be bringing in a dog, whether it be puppy or grownup, it wont matter.. it be coming into the CATS territory where the CAT owned lool worse maybe, it ifs a tom cat.. territorial,, dogs are sociable, cats are NOT lol

Welcome! I've had dogs and cats at the same time and usually the dogs were more afraid of the cats than the cats were of the dogs! Cats have those sharp claws, you know! When you get the cat, let the two pets get used to each other at their own pace. Don't try to get them to play together if they don't want to. Your dog may chase the cat, because it is a dog's instinct to chase things that run, and a cat's instinct is to run away from things chasing it! That doesn't necessarily mean the dog wants to harm the cat. They may ignore each other for a while, or the cat may hide behind the furniture until he gets used to the dog, the dog may even avoid the cat, just keep an eye on them and they will eventually become pals, or at least learn to tolerate one another.

OH, this has happened to us too! We had a pug growing up and a huge gray tom cat (bigger than the pug) and they were both soooo sweet and got along great, but the dog was more scared of the cat than the cat was of the dog! :)

hi how are you welcome to my lot and you are haveing a hard time choosing between your dog and your cat and i will like to suggest you to own a dog because they are very loving more than cats and they are also helpful in some bad times mean when you get acciented or when you are in trouble they also protect you from dangers like thieves adn rugs and rest the decision is yours

Welcome to my lot. We are all glad you find us here in my lot. We had a cat and dog in the house. In the beginning it's chaotic. But as the days goes by they mellow down. maybe they learn to accept the truth that I would not give up any of them.

dogs and cats can be very good pals ... dey enjoy each other's company .. but if da dog is grown up , it may initially hurt the cat .. so be careful abt dat .

My suggestion is since you want a dog but you already own a cat and you are not sure of what to do. I would advise you to maybe go to an animal shelter and inform them that you already have a cat and see if they could match you up with a dog that is friendly with cats. It is possible. I have owned a dog that was always friendly to cats.

I don't really caring for pets. Although we have a dog at home which serves as our guard. There are some stories I heard from friends were their pets lives harmoniously inside their homes. Since they are constantly together, they are not fighting at all.

it is hard to bring a new pet when u already have pets. they might not get along, jealousies, the cat will get pissed if u ignored it for the dog and will probably leave and not come back, seeking alternative home. (i have seen that happen before). my neighbor's jack terrier is pregnant. she said she might give me a puppy but i dont know if it is good idea because i have a cat already. and the cat might be mad and have issues with a new member of the household. it is easier if you get them at the same time so they get used to one another. if the cat is still young, it might work... but if the cat is old, i dont think it will work out... but it is up to you...if you think u can be a good cat/dog mediator...

We have 3 cats (rescued) and when we brought the last home everyone said they will never get along, etc etc etc. All are fine and getting along and all is well. We are hoping to introduce a small do into the lot at some point, (I wanted lots of kids, and could only have one - think I am substituting???!! :-) and I am not worried. We had dogs and cats growing up and just never worried about it and never had a problem. I am sure there are some that don't get along or as well, but in my experience cats, especially, if they don't want to deal with the dog or don't get along with it, they just stay away and up high enough that the dog can't find or get to them!

sometimes they can be good friends, you just need to guide them.

i have a cat :)) i don't mind dogs but they can be too noisy at everything they hear outside and take more looking after.. as for cat and dog getting along hmm it be more likely the cat will get nasty with the dog.. but only because the cat was there first, and cats like to own and also the dog be coming into your cats territory.. if was the other way round then maybe it be different.. or if brought up together, cat and dog can be the best of friends i think it be fine, as long as the dog dont try to own the place or sit in your cats favorite place hahaha.. then maybe would be a cat and dog fight cos cat would NOT be happy.. And also make sure the cat gets as much love and attention as before, they can be a little jealous and revenge if see the dog coming in and disrupting cats nice comfy home where SHE/HE owned YOU lool

Well, they wont kill each other or something like that (like on cartoons) but it would be nice that you take your cat with you to choose a dog and see how she/he responds to it, if freaks out, then goodbye dog!! jaja... NOOoOO, i'm kidding I'm my opinion, dogs are more obbedient but i also kinda like cats, it would be great to have them both!

We have a dog we have had for about 7 years and believe me he rules the house. Several months ago my daughter and I was at the animal shelter and they had this big white and black cat, my daughter got him for my hubby, well when we brought him home, the dog said No way not in my house, he wouldn't let him eat or lay on the back of the couch where he lays, but after awhile they got along. The cat is capable of taking care of himself, as he strikes out with his paws and those claws, it will back a dog down most of the time. Once they get used to being in the same house they will just tolerate each other.

Welcome to mylot. I have had both at the same time. Depends on the dog. Go to your local Humane Society. They have lists of dogs that are good with cats. THat is a good place to start.

We have a dog and a cat and they get along with each other well. I dont know how they do it but yes they eat together, play together and even sleep together. My dog is kinda friendly to all cats but some cats dont understand her and would bite and scratch her whenever she gets near her. maybe u can show ur cat that ur new dog is a friend by holding it near the dog while gently petting both of them. It takes time but i know both animals can get along well with each other :)

I think the dog finds out that the claws of a cat are not to fun. My yorkie chases the cats out of my room but has never bit them. The cats where here first so they still come in like "I am not gonna be moved"maybe to tease her ,But decide to leave anyway lol!

if you get a puppy, its more likely that the cat will hurt the dog. even though the dog grows to be like 10 times bigger than the cat, it will still fear it. lol
