It could be a muskrat. They can be pretty stinky too. Have no idea how to keep skunks away.

Oh if its a skunk you know it the minute you smell it lol. You know I don't know if anything can be done because as I understand they could be in a nearby yard and you would still smell it. Went down a road twice today and I guess one had been hit by a car. Stinky!

Keep skunks from denning under buildings by sealing off all foundation openings with wire mesh. Bury fencing one-and-a-half to two feet deep if they are getting in by digging. Use tight fitting garbage can lids to keep them out of trash. Keep rodents controlled, as skunks are attracted by rodents. Eliminate piles of lumber, fence posts and junk cars, as skunks like to take shelter in these. There are no registered repellents or toxicants for skunks. But most mammals can be repelled from closed areas with strong odors such as mothballs or flakes or ammonia-soaked rags. If you find a skunk in your garage, cellar or house, open the doors and allow them to exit. Do not prod or disturb the skunk.
