Beijing and smog

Looking at recent pictures of Beijing, and watching the news, I have been hopeful of the current pollution problem being resolved before the Olympics. Today was awful. I don't understand how many endurance athletes can expect to perform well under these conditions or how it is healthy. I have to call into question the judgement of the IOC in deciding on this. What is your opinion? Should the olympics have been in Beijing?
