Do you still use your cheque book ever?

Tonight i forgot that the Avon dude (the hubby of my Avon lady) would be delivering my Avon goodies so of course i forgot to get some cash ready to pay for it, so i had to use my cheque book instead as i didn't have enough cash in my purse. I've only ever used that particular cheque book once before and it was to pay the Avon dude one other time i didn't have any money on me. I've had that cheque book for 2 years now! In this day and age of credit card, cash cards, cash machines, paypal etc do you find yourself ever needing to use your cheque book any more or is it just gathering dust someplace in your house?

I still use checks on a regular basis but because I often review my account online, it has been a long time since I have used the ledger or tried to balance it.

I'm amazed at the number of people still using cheques. On Saturdays I see about my cousin's pet shop and quite a few people pay for their supplies with cheques. Cheque books are still in great use. The shipping company I work for uses cheques to pay most of their bills and although cards are given out in great numbers cheque fraud is still a major liability.

I do still use my checkbook quite often. I pay bills some with it and I write checks for Avon and things that come up that I can't use debit card for. I will occasionally write a check at the store too. I always have my checkbook with me so that if I am out and the machine won't take my card, I have another means of paying as I don't carry cash with me much. I think that it is important that we don't let everything go to being online as there are still risks involved with that information being stolen from us. Don't put all your eggs in one basket, so to speak!!

That's why i like to keep some cash too, in case there is a problem with the card. Plus me and my parter have a joint account but separate ones too, just in case.

I have not used my cheque book in years, I used to pay all my bills through cheque each month and what happened was that certain places would not cash the cheques for 2 - 3 weeks after I had sent it. Of course we were really hard up then and so the money that had been accounted for with the cheque would still be in the bank and I would forget and use it for something else. We kept ending up in our overdraft because of it and so I just knew that I had to stop using the cheque book, I did and have never used one since, it must be about 6 years now.

It's annoying when people do that! It's also anoying to have to wait for cheques you are sent to clear. Thank goodness we have paypal!

We use checks to pay all of our bills. My hubby used to make some payments over the phone, but he discovered that creditors would put the payments through before they said they would and he bounced some checks that way. Now we write them all out and mail them. I also prefer using checks over credit or debit cards. I have duplicate checks, so there's never any doubt about where the money has gone. Sometimes when you use a credit or debit card, the receipt they give out is so small and thin that it's easily lost...before one can write it down.

I would forget to post the cheques, and then be chased for the money! I guess it's each to their own.

I worked fo a charity a year back and they used cheques to issue all payments becuase of the way charities are set up they need two people to authorise payments so the best way to do it was by cheque, so yeah, i guess only businesses use cheques these days.

I'm like you; I've had my checkbook for a little over 3 years now and I've probably only written a total of about 10-15 checks. It's just so much easier to use a check or credit card.

I've not even used that many! Funny thing is a couple of years ago i used to use them all the time, but then i found paying by paypal online is easier, or just paying by card in shops etc.

I only use my check book once a month. Every other bill and thing I pay for at the store is done with my debit card or I pay alot of our bills online.

I rarely use my check book. I think I maybe write out 2 checks a month and now that school is getting back I will be writing out the tuition check but I pay almost all of my bills online. What I think is more surprising then not using a checkbook is I hardly use money anymore. I use my debit card for everything. I often think what would happen if the machine was broke and I couldn't pay at a resteraunt or grocery store. I usually don't carry my checkbook so I don't know what I would do. Another thing about the checkbook. Remember balancing your checkbook every month and writing everything down. I don't do that anymore. I go online everyday and see what has cleared and check my balance. I don't even get bank statements anymore - its all online.

I still use cash, there are still many things that you need to pay for cash with, usually small things for a few pounds and such like. I still get paper statments, though to be honest i should ask the bank to cancel them becuase most get shoved in a drawer unopened becuase i've already checked my online balance!

Our checkbook gets used for school functions only. All the other times we have cash or use the debit card. Only reason we use it for school is because we need the check stub for our taxes. We bought a box of checks three years ago and we are going to have to buy a new box probally next month.

I need to find a cheque book so I can keep track of how much I have spent on my debit card. Where do you get one?

Yuor chequebook won't tell you how much you spent on your card, only your card statement will tell you that. If you want a chequebook i suggest you see your bank, though you'll probably never use it!

Sure I do but it is on the rare side. Cheques take the place where cash may be inconvenient - e.g. you want to post it. Or, it might just be that you want to have a record kept - when you scribble in the stub of your cheques and that when the person cashes your cheque, the bank will have a record of their ID. Can be pretty useful sometimes.

Dear friend, In my country India were I live is south India here most transactions are done with cheques or if any borrowing or loans are closed through post dated cheques. Most of the banks too accept cheques for the investment. Hence very often I use cheques here.

well i have never used a check book before and i m not thinking to use since there is sites like paypal, alertpay and egold i think check book started to become history nowadays and in few years people will no longer use it and in the new generation when you say checkbook they will say what is that ? lol

I do - but very rarely. Like yourself it's usually for when the window cleaner or someone like Avon comes unexepctetly and needs paying. What is surprising is the amount of places that no longer accept cheques.
