Do your Friends or Family Smoke?

August 15, 2008 6:37am CST
I have a lot of friends that tend to smoke and my family, too. My mother smokes constantly, and I tend to avoide her because of this. My older sisters and a brother smoke as well. I tend to try and not go near them when they are smoking, because I usually end up breathing it in or smelling of smoke, and I hate that because people accuse me of smoking, which I don't. I have quite a few friends who do smoke, and most of them hate it because they only started due to peer pressure or because they thought it was 'cool'. They don't smoke around me, thankfully, they respect my views on smoking. I have other friends who don't smoke, as well, and they hate the habit. I don't mind smoking necessarily, as long as I don't have to be the one breathing it in. I tell my friends and mother its their own choice whther they want to smoke or not, but I also tend to tell them the dangers of it, as well. But its their life, and they can choose whether to smoke or not. I choose not to, but a majority of my friends and family choose to smoke.

I have friends that smoke but I don't smoke myself. I have never smoke and probably never will. I am like you I dont have a real problem with people that smoke but I dont want to be the one that have to inhale, but other than that I am fine with smokers thats there choice and there health.

Yes I do have friends who smoke and try notto be around too much...I never really understood what the hype is about or hat exactly they got from smoking. Like you I respect their views and if thta si what they want to do fair enough, but I do not htink that I should be subjected to their habit...second hand smoke inhalation is the same as if you were smoking too...at least that is what I have bene told, and from experience I believe it.

Hi Blueniagra. I have one sister and her husband who smoke. So do her 2 daughters and their husbands. But that's it in my family. Well, I do have a sister in law that lives up north that smokes. It is difficult to be around the smell of smoke. Even so, they are all respectful around the rest of us, who are nonsmokers.

When I was younger (like 7 or 8 years old), my mom used to smoke. I always said to her that I don't like and then, gradually, she stopped smoking. Nowadays, in our family, nobody smokes. And you don't know how relieving this is to me.. =)

I was a smoker in my teens but I stopped almost 5 years ago. When I was pregnant with our first boy I couldn't smoke and I never started after those 9 months. My husband smokes but he doesn't do it to close to the kids, he will go to the kitchen to smoke (there's always a little window open). And my mother smokes, that's where I got my example. She tried to stop multiple times, but she never could. Not even when she was pregnant with me or my brother, she did lower her intake, but couldn't stop it, and she still feels guilty about it. have a nice day

My husband and I both are long term smokers! though we've tried to give up in the past we haven't kicked the habit yet. A 40+year habit is very hard to break, especially when you enjoy it! Since the Smoking ban came in here I am gradually cutting down but my employer smokes heavily and as it's his home as well as a work-place and he's disabled I'm finding it difficult! My Mother and Step-father both smoked as did my Father and most of my brothers and sisters have been smokers in the past. There are 7 of us as well as 2 step-brothers and a step-sister, 3 of us smoke, 3 have never smoked, the others gave up. Several of my neices and nephews smoke, fortunately neither of our, now adult, children have ever smoked. I think my daughter tried it once and felt so sick she didn't try another. As a care-worker I know only too well what the risks are, as do my work friends but a large number of them smoke still. I think most of us feel 'it's a bit too late to worry' If I gave up tomorrow I'd be nearly 70 before it would reduce my chances to the same as a non-smoker! To get to 70 and not have Heart Disease or Angina in my family whether you smoke or not would be a minor miracle! Instead of warning your friends of the dangers, try pointing out the benefits of Not smoking from a financial side. The longer you smoke the more money you waste! Get them to work out how much it would cost them to buy a years supply. Then get them to imagine having that amount to spend on a holiday, or on clothes. Then get them to work out how much it's cost already! Tell them to imagine that amount of money burning in a pile, If that doesn't spur them on to quit nothing will! If they are young and single, appeal to their vanity. Get them really thinking of what they could do with that extra amount if they'd saved that money for a week. At 20 a day it's approx £35 UK and I can think of lots of things I'd have spent it on! They could have those shoes, or splash out on a tanning session or an hour in the gym! It's how I got my neice to give up. For a while at least! She's like I was at that age, if the statistics say 75% would get cancer, she'll say she could be in the 25% who don't! I keep pointing out how much older I look than her mum and all because I smoked! She's 3 years older!!! I keep telling her it will cost her a fortune in skin care products and she better start now. It really is too late for me, I have Heart Disease already and just quitting outright would be too stressful but I'm getting there slowly. I would encourage anyone to give up before it really is too late!

I tend to move away from people that smoke. It is not good for you. So I will leave them to themselves. Smoking is a nasty bad habit.

That's a shame for you that you hate it so much yet so many people that you know smoke. It must make it hard that you have to avoid your own mum because of that. It's horrible when you have to smell of it all the time, even though you don't smoke and you hate it. It's not too good for your health either, which is unfair as it's not your fault at all. I used to have a few friends who smoked, but they have mostly given up now. I met one friend the other day who I hadn't seen for a few years, and he used to be a really heavy smoker. But then he got hypnotised and it worked really well, and he hasn't smoked for over a year! Maybe some of the people you know could consider this if they want to give up. This friend told all his smoking friends about it, and it worked for all of them too! Now I just have one friend who smokes. She's tried to give up many times with patches and gum, but whenever she's stressed she just goes back to it. She only smokes in the garden, which is lucky. I wouldn't want her to smoke in my house. I'm sure it's affecting her health. I think I'll tell her about hypnotism and see if she's thought about that.

nobody in my immediate family smoke. my father used to but that was years... ago. i don't know why he cut it, but whatever the reason is, i'm happy he stopped. i am the eldest and i am sixteen years old. when i was about 5 or 7 years old, i tried to. haha...but i ended up choking. i swore that i will never smoke. naturally, my younger brothers won't be smoking. the next one to me is 14 years old and i don't really think that he's the type who'd smoke.

My husband smokes and it drives me crazy! I have always told myself that I would never be involved with anyone that smoked and now I am married to a smoker! It proves that you can't help who you fall in love with ;)

Saviour-V teleports in... 1st younger brother. He's married, too. Ironically, our Dad's a doctor, but as he said, "It's up to him to quit." Thankfully, he doesn't smoke at our family home, but when he's driving, or being a front-seat passenger in my car, he'd smoke, but usually limits it to a single stick. Lately, ever since prices have gone up though....he rarely does smoke, so that's one small victory, in my humble opinion. Saviour-V grins, and teleports out...
