My guess is that China will maintain first rank in most gold. They have the most athletes at the Olympics anyway. While currently the US has the most medals, China may still get ahead in total medal count. But somehow my money is on the US there. My guess is the rest of them will not catch up.

why u think china will be leading in the olympic.other countries are also hardwork to get more medals.the michel phelps of USA will win itself 8 gold medals and one week is left.so anything will be possible in olympic.but the advantage china have that hey have there own home ground.so ths will help them.what you think about the total tally.which country will get most medals as total of all medals

Oh, and just the eight Phelps medals are really not enough considering that China has been excelling at Gymnastics, Diving, and some other sports. I may not agree with their tactics, but facts are they have a significant lead in gold medals and are now only one medal behind the US in the overall tally. They plain and simply have what like 200 more athletes there than the US. You do the math!

Yadav, China has invested so much in sports development and with its human mass will probably carry the 2008 Olympics. See here for updates http://results.beijing2008.cn/WRM/ENG/INF/GL/95A/GL0000000.shtml The USA is a close second but will struggle to maintain the overall lead. Olympics performance statistics have been changing since the collapse of the former COMECON countries - USSR and Eastern Europe. The communist system had huge political and economic investments in sports which are not sustained anymore. Take the case of former East Germany. Since the 1996 Olympics they have steadily deteriorated and today the unified Germany does not even have the medals tally that the former East Germany had! When China's communist system collapses (as I am sure it will one day) it would be interesting to see how the economy resources investments in sport. But in the short term Chinese investments in sports will prevail and China will lead in the medals harvest.
