What for you is the GREATEST sound in the world?

For me there is no question whatseover in my mind! It is not the sound of the wind, or the sound of the ocean..... It isn't the sound of birds singing or classical music..... All of these things are of course wonderful to hear and soothing to the ear but the one thing that I consider to be the greatest sounding thing in the world is the sound of a child laughing! Unlike adults who sometimes tend to be over aware of those around them when laughing; a child laughs with their whole body and soul! Totally uninhibited and carefree! I defy anybody that hears a child laughing to not at least break into a smile! What about you? Do you have any particular sound that meanssomething to you or that you consider to be the most wonderful thing you have heard? Maybe it is a sound that brings back certain memories that are unique and special to you?

I talk to my children every weekend over the phone as I am in another country from them and have to admit that these three little words melt my heart also! I savour every single second they are saying this becasue if they end up anything like I was when they become teenagers then I am probably not going to hear this as often if at all! lol. Thanks for responding.

I can imagine! "Mother is God in the eyes of a child!" It is a shame that as they get older many kids start to lose this spontaneity. Thank goodness we now have so many ways to record special moments like these!

There are so many beautiful sound in the world and all of them are sounds by nature. for me the best is the giggles and laugh of my kids. The grandest for me is the blowing of the horn, I saw this in movies with ancient themes and battle and the sound is grand.

I know the sound you are referring to here! The "ta-rantara" of the horns on the battlefield and also a similar sound when someone of importance arrives! Grand is definitely a good word to use to describe this! Thanks for responding.

no. that is not what i mean. what I am referring is the sound of horn, a ram horn or viking horn for instance, the one they blow before the war starts. or the sound the elephants made.

OK. My mistake! I do know which one you are referring to now but I have no idea how to type the sound it makes! lol. It's sort of a long deep drawn out sound..... Right?

James, Although I do not have any children and cannot express this feeling as much as a parent will, the sound of a child laughing is still the greatest sound in the world to me. It makes me forget all the worries in the world, and makes me often wonder on the complexities of life which make us forget what it is to feel carefree. The first cry of a new born child is also as special.

It is very true that you do not even have to have your own kids to truly appreciate this sound! It has such an infectious tone to it that it reaches out to all of us! A newborn baby's cry is magical as it signifies a new beginning and a whole new life! The emotions you feel when that newborn baby cry is your own child are indescribable! I am happy in advance for when that time may come for you to experience also! Thanks for responding.

Before I even started reading your whole discussion, the first thing that came to mind was the laughter of a baby. The way they giggle at 1 or 2 years of age, it is the best sound there ever was. Their laughter can make anyone smile or laugh along with them. I love that little high pitch sound they make right before they start giggling again. There are other sounds that are wonderful to hear, but that is by far the greatest sound ever.

it's a tough one for me, it would either be the sound of a pinch harmonic being played on a guitar or the sound of heavy rain on a roof! haha pretty different, i love the sound of the rain and it always relaxes me, but i love love love hearing the guitar too!! xxx

Actually I too love the sound of rain..... Especially at night when you are laying in bed and falling asleep. I also like the smell in the air when it's raining. I enjoy hearing any instrument played well also. Have you seen the guy playing the classical music on electric guitar on YouTube? He's amazing and very talented. If you haven't seen it let me know and I will add the link. Thanks for responding.

The smell of the rain is probably my favourite smell, especially when the weather has been really warm and then there's a big storm! I haven't seen that but it sounds interesting! There's a band called the string quartet that play songs by famous heavt rock and metal artists in a classical style, that's worth a listen, as well as apocolyptica, a band that play metal music on cellos!! a true talent i reckon!! xxx

I completely agree with you--my two-year-old laughs loud & proud, and it's such a great noise I can't help but smile when I hear it. My older two have already decided that they can't always laugh the way they want to....they check to make sure others are laughing first, then they'll let loose. Though after a day of kids fighting (which is pretty frequent), silence is golden!

Savour every moment! Isn't it a shame that already your oder two have started to be aware of what's around them rather than just let loose with laughter like your two year old. Thanks for responding.

Me and my kitty - Me and Karma, she came walking up to me out of nowhere, came cuddling up to me and played with my hair and fingers. Very cute :)
I agree the laughter of children is very much different from that of adults. Young babies can only laugh out of pleasure, they can't fake a smile yet. That is actually scienticly proven which makes it the purest smile of all. When people get older they can smile to greet someone or trying to be polite, a baby or child can't and won't do that. The nicest sound in the world is that of a purring kitten. It makes me relax, and as a cat lover it reminds me of all the loving pets I had in my life. When my new kitten purred for the first time in her life (she's born at my neighbours so I go over their daily, she's 5 weeks old now) I was so happy she did this whilst she was on my lap. It made me feel specially connected to her.

Very true, I think people can only reach a certain state through meditation. There is no way we can sit down and relax in this way like a cat can, you are very right calling at an ultimate relaxation state. Thanks for responding back to me.

The best thing about a child's laugh is that it is totally uninhibited and free. The term "pure" is definitely a very good choice of word to use here! And as for cats purring; this too represents the ultimate level of contentment and relaxation for a cat and I am sure that many of us wish that we too could achieve a similar state of bliss! Thanks for responding.

Very nice mimpi1911! We should all sometimes just stop and listen to the sounds of the world around us as we get so caught up in everything else we tend to ignore things like this. Thats why we have two ears and one mouth! Listening is so much more important! Thanks for responding.

Right now, I would have to say it is the sound of my cat purring. That's unconditional love and it's especially welcome on a bad day. Let the world say what they will about me, Humphrey loves me no matter what and I feel that love when I hear his purr.

Actually I can relate to this too! When I was younger we had four cats and there was a certain level of comfort to be had when I was laying in bed at night with one of the cats purring away beside me! It is a symbol of pure contentment and h=joy on their part! Thanks for responding.

that is also my favourite sound, there is an advert on tv at the moment about some baby food but it always make me laugh because there are lots of babies laughing at random silly things. It always cheers me up at work if a baby is laughing near by.

I have to agree with you on that. It is the best sound ever to hear a child laugh. I just love listening to my two year old son when he laughs. It is so infectious that i always find myself joining in. I have found that strangers in the street will have a smile on their faces after hearing my son laugh. It's just such a happy sound.

You're right. If my daughter is tickled by somethign that she sees, she will laugh to her heart's content. They are so innocent and carefree, that's what I love about them. But I still love the sound of the waves splashing by the beach. It's so calming. It reminds me that I badly need a vacation.

The sounds of the ocean are very soothing for me also! I have always loved the beach and have not had the chance to swim in the ocean or even set foot on a beach for almowt two years now..... I miss it a lot as my home town is a coastal town. As for kids laughter from tickling them? This is hilarious to hear! It borders on hysterical laughter mixed with screaming after a while! lol. Thanks for responding.

same... to me it is also the laughter of children... more specifically, the laughter of my younger brothers.. i think it is even better when it's US that make them laugh... like when we are chasing them around and having so much fun. and all of us are sweaty and face rosy with heat and joy. they will all be shirking with laughter and having breating so hard as we were chasing them all around and around... did it today.. my sister and i brought our brothers (aged 12, 3 and 4) out to get a drink and the two younger ones found a playground and we were all having fun there!!! i want to do it tommorrow... i miss being so carefree and having nothing else on my mind except "tickle him!!!" another one, that brings me all the way back will be a song. its a cassette tape, and has lullibyes in it. the songs there are really unique and when my sisters and i were young, we used to dance to it before getting to bed. we had this "dance routine" to it... and we will always ask our mom and dad to "come see!!! come see!!!" we still have the tape, but we never played it anymore.. we dont have the tape player anymore... so we cannot play it.. sad!!!! but just seeing the tape brings memories!!!

The best thing about making children giggle is that it can take the silliest thing to trigger a fit of laughter! For sure you would know this when playing with your brothers! We can forget our age and just be a bit of a fool once in a while and they LOVE it! lol. If you remember the name of the tape or the songs then there might be a digital copy somewhere? You can pretty much source ANYTHING online these days! Even if you could find the individual songs one by one you could put them all together for am immediate trip down memory lane! Thanks for responding.

Hi James, We meet again! The sound of a giggling baby, yes that's very nice to hear. My favourite sound though has to be the whistling of the wind! On an especially windy day you only have to open the window very slightly to allow a draught in, and then you can hear the constant whistling of the wind like restless spirits whispering to eachother!! I also love sounds of the ocean and the chorus of whales communicating with eachother, I have these last two sounds on cd and I listen to them occasionally when I feel like relaxing. Andrew

Hi Andrew. That we do! Yes the sound of the wind if it is not too fierce can be very soothing; and the sounds of the ocean are one of my favourite natural sounds of all. Even the smell of the ocean makes me feel great. Whale sounds are remarkable too. The tones they use are so deep and soulful it's as if they vibrate through your entire body. Maybe this is why they are so complimentary to relaxation? Thanks for another great response and I hope you have been enjoying the site thus far.

The laughter of a child is the best sound for me. I love it when my toddler laughs...and I also have 19 kids at school...who I love to hear (except when they are really trying to be monkeys!). But there are times when everyone is laughing and it's just great:)

You get no argument from me on this one. The laughter of 19 kids all at once must be an amazing experience! It is such a pure emotion coming from a child and you just can't help but feel better about everything when you hear it. Thanks for responding.

I have to agree with you that ANY sound our own child makes is like music to our ears; even if it IS passing gas! If you can get your son passing gas and your wife singing at the same time then you may end up in a state of perpetual bliss! lol. Thanks for responding.
