My son will be moving in with his dad

My soon to be ex husband and I are separated and he will be moving up to NY in about 2 weeks.
I have a 12 year old son, a 9 year old daughter and a 4 year old son. The oldest is going to live with his dad by choice.
We didn't want to separate the kids but it's for the best. My son has been having problems with a couple of the boys that live in my neighborhood and he stayed in most of the summer because of them.
This way when my son goes up to NY, he will have cousins his age to hang out with and go to school with. He won't have to be a total hermit.
Has anyone else had to split the kids up between you and your ex and why?

I only have one daughter... so splitting the kids up is not a problem when my husband and i finally decide to separate... we are already living separate lives since he works abroad... and if the separation does happen... for sure i will get my daughter because i am the mother... and i have a steady job... here...
I hope your son will do well in NY... i think that is a good decision... and it is nice that you supported him...

I am sure he will do well. He is leaving on Saturday. I told my soon to be ex husband to please, please get him to therapy. I really do believe divorce hurts the kids emotionally and I feel he needs it. Keeping my fingers crossed that he does that for him.

Hi seabeauty,
It must be terribley hard for you, not only all this splitting with your ex but loosing your son as well, I cannot imagine how your are feeling as I hve no children but I know my heart will be breaking so much but like you said it will be better for him. I hope all will be well for you and your kids.

I have never had this problem and I hope everything goes well. I have a nephew that have custody of both his children, he and the mother wasn't together, but she passed and specified that she wanted the father(my nephew) to have custody of the children. I know that is a whole different situation. But I thought I would share that with you.
How you feel about him living with his father? Are you going to be able to deal with this mentally?

I am fine with it emotionally. I am hoping to see him either for Thanksgiving or Christmas.
