It's a Holiday... Are you nuts?

September 1 is a holiday here in our city. This is the day we celebrate the day of our city. No classes... no work... Or so I thought... Earlier today, I saw an announcement on our bulletin board. On September 1, in the morning, we will be having a meeting. And on September 1, in the afternoon, we will be having a tree planting activity. WHAAAAT? We need to report (unpaid) on a holiday? Yes, we are required to attend. Well, I can't though as they just mentioned it today and I have a very important errand to complete on September 1 which I have set a couple of weeks ago. That's it! I am not attending! For one, I have things planned a couple of weeks back and they just announced the activity today. I can't change my schedule for their sake!

I do not blame you for being annoyed at that, I would tell them an idea of where they could plant my tree! I worked in a place once that used to do that, bring us in for stupid things on our days off and not pay us I just used to say that I could not because of my son, as I was a single parent at the time so I used to get out of it. I think that is really bad of them, if they want you to come in and are telling you that you are required to attend then you should be paid, otherwise they cannot tell you that you have to go.

I do agree with you. Even one of my colleagues who promised her sons that they will be going out on that day is worried about getting to break her promise to her sons...

Hi dolce_vita! Oh that is kinda unfair! I think that they shouldn't require you guys to attend. I think that if it is an extra curricular activity of the company that would involve the employees, they should first consult the employees. After all, the employees are the ones who are going to sacrifice their holiday and not the executives of the companies. Take care always..God Bless!

We were never consulted about that activity. They just posted the announcement and expected us to just comply. They should also have considered the fact that plans might have been made earlier as we all knew that September 1 was our City's Charter Day--a holiday!

It is Labor Day and a holiday for us too. We are planning to have a cookout with my mom, sister and my step-dad that day. I hope it is nice weather. It is supposed to be. I didn't have any plans yet or I would not have changed them either. I don't blame you for not wanting to go to your work unpaid. that is rediculous since you already made plans anyway.

Hi dolce, wow! that is very inconsiderate, people loves to enjoy the holiday for sure and they want to spend it with their loved ones and family! I am sure many will not also attend! LOL! When, I was working, that is always the issue of my previous company, it's the 2nd actually since the 3rd company where I was working was very considerate!

While there are few like me who will not attend the other activity, there are those who do not like to attend but will attend anyway because they are afraid to be issued a memo. Oh well...

That was what I was thinking Tamara... September 3 to September 6 is the examination period and thus we have so much extra time as we are only required to report during the time we are to administer an exam. Why not do those activities during those days? Oh well! That's the disadvantage of being just a subordinate...

well, i won't be attending it as well if i were in your position... i will explain to my boss that i already had a plan for myself which i had organised couple of weeks ago... especially if it is unpaid... they can't force me to come... if i am free and i don't have anything to do on that day, then i don't mind to come... otherwise, they can forget it... i'm not changing my schedule for their sake as well... take care and have a nice day...

Well that is pretty rude. But it seems that many employers seem to think they trump family and personal life. I would explain to the employer that you have a prior commitment that can't be rescheduled on such short notice. You have a right to your time off and life. Good luck.

Hi dolce_vita78, September 1 also a public of my country, but it was a replacement holiday. Our independent days falls on August 31, due to it was Sunday, so we got replacement holiday on the following day. I have went back to my hometown on August 30 and stayed there for 3 days. So, i actually spent most of my times to accompany my family. Really sorry to know about your adhoc annoucement from your company. If i am the one who having the same issue, i will choose attend those more important activity like meeting. In my opinion, we are not suppose to report ourselves (unpaid) on a holiday, if company not paying us on that (either double paid or triple paid), at least they need to give us some allowance on meal or add one more annual leave to us.

I'm sorry to hear this. I think you should talk to your boss, tell him/her what your plan and why you cannot attend to the meeting. Explain to him/her until he/she understand it clearly. I just worry if you just not attend the meeting like that. I'm myself have a graduate ceremony on this Saturday, our weekend here, but I'm ready for it. It's different from your case as you have another plan on 1 September.

I will be attending the meeting but not the tree planting activity. I wish I could talk to our boss but doing so will just prove to be a futile exercise. One time, I was not feeling well, I explained to her why I should take the day off but she told me that perhaps I was just tired and I should attend to my class (I am a college instructor)anyway.
