What do you find is the best way to get your kids to do their chores?

I've tried a few different methods over the years, like job boards and allowance. Some have worked better than others. Some work better with younger kids and others with older kids. What have you found to be the best way to get your kids to do their daily chores?

With the little ones, it's best to help them. I look them in the eye, take them by the hand and go with them and help. My older daughter doesn't need the help but sometimes she needs to be told that we are serious about it. Once in a while it is necessary to walk up and turn the TV (or whatever) OFF! :-)

A friend of mine recently told how one day she actually went up and CUT the cable to the TV LOL. I guess her kids were spending too much time watching TV and not getting their stuff done. Course, several days later they had managed to splice the cable back together, but I thought it was pretty funny. I would have liked to see the look on their faces. I do agree about helping little ones. If you invest a little time up front to do it with them and teach them how, then down the road you don't have as much hassle when they can do a good job of it themselves. I was much better at this with my first couple of kids. Not so much with my baby (she's 10) and now I am noticing the difference (heavy sigh).

well my kids are still to young for chores, my 5 yr. old does have a few, I think i'm going to try a chore chart, then maybe a treat at the end of the week. I'll see how that works before i move on.

I did this with my first child when he was about that age and it worked pretty well for a while. The trick is to be consistent. I had a little hook with cards that hung down showing a picture of the chore. When she did the chore, she flipped the card over. A treat or fun activity I think is better for kids this age as money is kind of lost on them. Good luck!
