'If you're fat, it's your fault. Do something about it and get in shape!'

Alright, hold itthey're not my words but those of a member of a political party... This was in reaction to a study that found that Britain is the fattest European nation and 1/4 of the adults are obese. This is also due to the fact that the Health Service is strained due to trying to manage conditions that come up as a result of people being overweight and using excuses for what is deemed their responsibility to get in shape. What is your view on this? Do you think it is indeed people's fault that they are fat and they should do something about it? Could it maybe be genes or a condition from early childhood? Aren't there known ailments or illnesses or medications that may make people put on weight and also maybe an injury or disability that prevents them from being able to exercise and should this then mean it is not their fault that they are fat? I think it does depend on the individual person and not the whole group of overweight people. Hypothetically, if you are fat or overweight, is it your fault and should you be doing something about it? Do you think the overweight people should take this message to heed?

Sometimes it is there fault but other times no. I take med's. that make me gain weight and now I'm depressed as well, so that is not helping as I have arthritis so I can't move as good or open things anymore. When I walk now it is from side to side as I broke my ankel a while back. But that is one of my goals to stop smoking and loose wieght have to so both at the same time. I don't even want to live with me. lol no ice cream how rude.

I think it could be any and all of these reasons. I am overweight and I think it is partly due to poor eating choices and not enough physical activity. I also know there are many heavy women in my family on both my mother's side and my father's side. So I think I have a propencity towards gaining weight anyways. I am really going to try to shed some of my excess weight though, both for looks and my health. Have a great day and happy myLotting!!!

I think this is so mean for people to say so to the big people. There are many reasons to gain extra weight. Perhaps the big people already try to do something to lose weight, but it may not work so well. We have no rights to blame them because of it. That's so hurtful for them. I love China

I think this is so mean for people to say so to the big people. I think so too, it should not be a generalisation as each individual is different

Hi! I'm a fat person and I do think some of it is my fault. I used to eat junk foods in great amounts. But now, I've been losing weight and doing something about it. But for that person to generalize that it's a person's fault, I guess he's wrong! There are three body types and one of them (endomorph I think) is prone to easily gaining more weight. Sometimes, it also runs in the family. If a child was brought up in such a way that his mentality is he/she can eat whatever he/she wants anytime, then I guess it's the parent(s)'s fault. There are also medical conditions in which a person can gain weight. One of it is hypothyroidism wherein a person's body metabolism is slow. Instead of metabolizing all the food, the body is not able to and the rest of the food are stored as fat. On the other hand, it can also be people's fault for it's up to them what to eat. I do hate those people who sue fastfood companies that they get fat. I believe those fastfood companies didn't command them to eat there. It's really upto the person what to eat. "Do something about it and get in shape!" -- Easy for them to say! I've been trying to lose weight since I was 12. I'm 20 now and I'm still fat. At least this year, I've lost the most pounds in my entire life and I hope to lose more. My only problem is, I've this knee condition called chondromalacia. Too much pressure on my knees caused the cartilage to thin. It's one reason why I can't go exercise to lose weight. If I do, I'll have arthritis-like pains at an early age. The worse thing is, a cartilage takes a really looooooooooong time to get replaced or might not even get replaced at all by the body. To avoid that, I just go on a diet. Unfortunately, I'm prone to stomach ulcers so I really can't go on a strict diet. I managed to work it out however. I just lessen my intake a bit and try to lessen a lot of my junk food intake. It all turned out fine and I've lost 9 kilos / 19.8 lbs and I'll continue to do so until I get to the proper weight for my height. I think I'm more determined now because I see results. Sorry for this lengthy, erm...rant? All I can say to them is they try it out for themselves and let's see if they can do it in an easy way. Before they say things like that, they should try it for themselves because we fat people are going through a lot with our battle with weight. And for all the fat people out there just like me, we can do it! It's our choice to lose weight. Let's not mind those people who look down on us. We're human beings too. When we lose weight, we'll show them won't we? Thanks for opening this up. I hope my post did not upset you because it's a semi-comment semi-rant.

No, your post does not upset me in the least and thanks for the detailed comment. People make a lot of assumptions about fat and overweight people and yet not all of them are the same, for some it's not their fault and they find it hard to lose or keep weight off. Some people eat as much or even more than some overweight people but never put on weight so it is wrong to make such assumptions and generalise people. Cheers for your response

I think it depends on the person really, maybe genetics, maybe poor eating choices. I think it might be hereditary or the tendency towards it at least.

I have to say that I don't think it's exactly their fault, but they certainly shouldn't blame other people for it. I'm not exactly thin myself, but I accept that's because I'm too lazy to excersize properly and I don't want to eat nothing but salad all day. I will do something about it soon, I will be joining a gym when I have the money to do so, but until then I shall stay overweight. There are injuries such as broken legs which would stop people from excersizing, and some medication can make your body hold weight more than it normally does as well.

It is a fact that people in developped countries now have the problem of getting fat. I think there are some people that have medical issues but for the vast majority it is the food and the quantities they eat. There is no way you get fat or stay fat if your diet consists of unrefined foods, no sugar, plenty of vegetables and fruits, very little meat and a moderate amount of carbohydrates. Typically, if the intake of these foods is about 1500-1600 calories a day you will not get fat. Genes play a role to a certain extent but for most people it is just unhealthy food.

I agree with you. It's all our fault what our body is at the moment. That's merely the result of our activities and routines in the past. I am not fat but I am thin. I want to buff up and gain a bit weight. I am actually thinking of going to the gym but my schedule doesn't permit me so. Currently, I would just jog at dawn with my wife in the nearby park every weekend.

okay, there are people who are fat and it not being their fault..Like you said there are medication and medical reasons why people are over weight.. one being an overactive thyroid, also pcos will cause somoene to gain weight and makes it veary veary hard for them to loose.theres also many ones out there that i am not knowledgeable on;however, some people who are fat are able to change that and decide not to. or do not have the will to. so yes i think that there are reasons other for people to be over weight other then being lazy... and just because you make this post or somoene makes a mean and nasty comment to someone who is overweight. its not going to do anything unless they want to do somthing about it... I also firmly beleive that some people just dont have a strong enough will to actually get out there and do exzcersizes after all when you are heavyset it is hard to do thoes excersizes...

hi marina Judge not lest you be judged. thats my creed. I am overweight and yes I am not blind, I do not need you or you or you to tell me that, and yes I am under a doctor's care, and yes I know it is unhealthy to you and you and you out there looking down your noses, and yes I am doing something about it but it takes time, toyou and you and you out there. and no it is not my fault, I was put on Avandia and one of its side effects is weight gain. and yes I again am off it and am doing all I c an to lose weight. so I am doing something about it, but again I have a bad leg which makes it hard for me walk. I have had it with people and countries and anyone else who is constantly onto anyone who is not a size ten. go play in traffic as I am through with you all.

Hatley,If you look at my original post, you'd see that those were not my words dear I am overweight(in the real sense of the word) myself so no, I am not judging anyone at all and as I have stated, I do not think overweight people should be generalised as everyone has their own story

There are many reasons why people weigh too much - from SOME heredity problems to LOTS OF poor eating habits. What's important to remember, though, is that as with any change in a person's life, changing eating habits has to be something a person wants to do or it will never happen. Ultimately, we're responsible to and for ourselves. As my son and I were talking the other night, I made an observation. You never see a fat person over about the age of 68. Does that mean that they finally learn how to eat? Or that old age kicks in and makes everyone skinny after that age? Or...do fat people die before the age of 68. I think it's the latter, mostly. I know that many people will not change eating habits until some doctor says so. It was that way with my dad. As he lay in the hospital one time - with pneumonia and heart problems - he was told to stop smoking and drinking and to watch his diet. He did the first two, but he relied on my mother to shop for foods and cook them, so he never did eat a more healthy diet. My hubby was diagnosed with diabetes II, high cholestrol and high blood pressure. I figured out one time that before we were married 3+ years ago (and afterwards since he ate a bunch during work hours) that he was eating between 4000 and 6000 calories a day! And not exercising. It's no wonder he gained so much weight over the span of 2-3 years. The doc put him on 1500 calories a day - a big change. He lost about 50 pounds the first 6 months. Now he cheats again, and he's losing maybe 3 pounds every 3 months. He's supposed to lose another 80 pounds or so, but I cannot nag. He has to want to...

Note: Even though I have an obese husband, I fully agree with the idea of charging people more money for insurance if they're overweight. And for charging some people for 2 airplane seats if they weigh too much.

I don't think it's always the persons fault. I do believe some people are just meant to be overweight. I, myself, am and I've tried losing weight. I eat healthier and worked out for up to 2hrs a day. My weight is a yoyo. I would lose, then gain - and it keeps going like that. Some people are overweight and healthy. It's just the way they are.

i think besides the effect of genes and medicines, nowadays the society brings too many pressure and trashy fastfood to people.these factors resaulted more and more people overweight directly.so i am sure that ---if i am fat ,it's my fault.do sth about it and get in shape.

If you are fat then its not your fault. Its a kind of disease. Your low metabolism rate is not in your control. If you even eat less due to slow metabolism you get fat. According to my knowledge, I thought Americans were more obese but thanks for increasing my knowledge and changing my point of view.

I know its not your words, but comments like that tick me off. I am overweight and i dont view it as my fault. I was skinny most of my life until i was put on certain medications and i gained a hundred pounds in less than a year. On top of which i have an underactive thyroid that i take medication for. I try to exercise but because i have fibromalyga its painful. I don't care for the fact that i am overweight and i watch what I eat, but because of the whole its being painful to exercise its hard to lose the weight. I think in some circumastances it is the persons fault because they don't do anything to lose the weight but a lot of us overweight people try to do things and its just hard.

I myself believe that weight gain and the ability to lose unwanted pounds has to do with metabolism.s we get older, our metabolism slows down.Through in the stress of a job,a family and any additional stress than can happen, your metabolism can pretty much stop.I can look at food and gain weight.I eat once a day and gain 15 lbs. a year, but only lose 5 lbs of that before I gain another 15 lbs.JMO!

I myself believe that weight gain and the ability to lose unwanted pounds has to do with metabolism. so true, there's skinny people who eat a lot but do not put on weight.. It all depends on an individual
