If your dog needed very expensive surgery, would you put it down or pay for the surgery?

Pay for surgery. The only time I would ever put a dog down would be if they had something that could not be fixed or if they had something that kept them from living a normally life such as a breathing disorder or something extreme like that.

Unfortunately we would have to put it down. We are completely broke right now and we couldn't afford to pay for a surgery. When our dog was a puppy my husband fell on her and broke her leg. Where it was broke would have gave her problems growing so we had two options. We could pay $2500+ to have them do surgery and put in a plate that might not help much or we could let them amputate for $500. I like animals but I couldn't see spending that much on one.

I'm sorry, but if you know how much vet's fees cost and you wouldn't want to pay that much to help an animal in pain then why on Earth would you own any pets? I don't understand why someone would get a pet and then when something's wrong claim they havent got enough money to get it treated. It's a major thing you have to consider before getting an animal.

I had to have my beloved dog put down due to cancer in his rear leg! There was no way to save him, he was too sick and it was the worst day of my life!

We have pet insurance so that wouldn't be an issue. It would only depend on the quality of life he would have after the surgery. Kai is 10 years old now so the deductible per illness/accident is £95.00, after that the insurance covers everything. Whenever someone is interested in getting a pet, they should always look at getting insurance before the pet is 8 years old. We got Kai when he was 6 years old and we immediately got pet insurance for him. I would never, ever put a dog down because the surgery was expensive. Dogs are a part of our family, they are like our kids. I wouldn't do that to a human and I certainly wouldn't do that to a dog. They deserve a happy, healthy life and we make sure they get it.

I'd pay for it without a doubt. Money is not an issue, I'm far from loaded with them but I'd much rather give up the luxuries of life (tv, cars, internet, expensive clothes and food, etc) than put a dog down for no reason other than money. The only time I'd not pay is if the dog wouldn't be able to have a good quality of life after the surgery and it would be better for the dog to be put down. I'd hate it of course but I wouldn't want to have a pet that is in constant pain either.
