Cycling on the roads

August 28, 2008 10:50am CST
I have recently started to cycle to work. Mostly to save money on fuel bills but also for the health benefits. I find that I get to and from work a lot quicker as I am not stuck in traffic. I have noticed though that the car drivers don't always leave a lot of room for you and can be quite aggressive. Who else has had this kind of problem whilst cycling on the roads? Thanks James

Hello,Mcgee! In these hard days cycling is best for us.Cycling is the best exercise as well as it saves both time and money. But you should be very much careful in the road while cycling as the car drivers and the bike riders are recklessly driving cars and bikes that I apprehend accident every moment. However it is quite good for traveling short distances.Am I right?thanx.

Yes it is much better in my opinion for me to cycle to work than to drive. Sometimes I have to drive if there is something I need to carry or somewhere I need to go that i can't go on my bike. Thanks for the response. James

I think it works both ways... there are a lot of inconsiderate drivers - and a lot of inconsiderate cyclists. I have seen drivers get far too close to cyclists and cyclists swerve across traffic lanes without looking or signalling. I would like to see far more cycle lanes and far more courtesy and common sense on both sides.

As a cyclist and also a driver it does annoy me to see inconsiderate cyclists who do as you descibe. I do not do this though as I value my life and would not fancy being under a car because I cut them up! Thanks for your response. James

I'm more of the behind the wheel person. Granted I dont get agressive about it, but it does frustrate me. People think they can pedal hard, but they're no speed racer. On top of that, I'm always afraid they'd wreck and I'd hit them.

Yes cycling is slower (on a straight clear road) than being in a car. I tend to go at my own pace but give cars plenty of room to get by me if they can/need to. Thanks for your response. James
