Do you buy an expensive gift to impress others?

I am attending a party for my great-nephew's first birthday. How much do you spend? I am not into impressing others by purchasing an expensive gift that this child will never remember receiving. Clothing is what I usually buy for young children. I stay within the $10 range for gifts, and if I can find something cheaper I will buy that item.

I usually dont spend lot of money on first birthday. For my younger niece's birthday, I just bought the tape for my camcorder and take the party for her. That way when she get older she can go back and see how her first birthday was. Plus, one year old wont remember who got which for him so if you go to the dollar store, they got tons of toys for dollar!!

I spent $8 on a pair of pants and a flannel shirt for my nephew. He wasn't even the slightest bit interested in it. The toys he received made his little eyes light up. But, will he recall who gave him what and how much was spent on each item?
