I have both Gmail and Hotmail accounts but much prefer Gmail. It's much more user friendly.

I would also say GMail (www.gmail.com), for the nearly 3gb of free space and *great* spam protection (very few make it into my Inbox). If you require greater security, you might also want to check out Hushmail (www.hush.com), which (for those who know about it) offers PGP-based encryption technology - although you don't get much space, so the free account is only useful for those "sensitive" conversations. Keep in mind though, if you aren't protected against the latest spyware threats by a good antivirus, someone could have a keylogger installed on your system, which can record the keys you type and even email them to someone.
