Are you afraid of Spiders? Meet my Spider. He's pretty Cool.

This spider has made my front porch his home for over 3 years. He spins his web in the same place every night. He enjoys moths, beatles and other flying insects. As you can see, he is well fed. He dismantles his web daily and build a new one in the evening. He does that because if the web gets dusty, it won't be as effective in catching his dinner. His web is made of saliva, so it's very sticky. When some unfortunate insect gets caught in his web, he quickly wraps it up and enjoys a sip of bug soup. I took this picture around 11:00 p.m. last Saturday night. Are you afraid of Spiders? Have you ever been had a spider bite you? I have many spiders in both my front and back yard. In my opinion, they are as scared of you as you may be afraid of them. What do you think of my pet Spider? Lloyd

I use to not mind spiders as long as they weren't over my head but a few days ago a big spider was running across my neck and down to my arm and that really freaked me out. We live in the city and we have a big lot full of trees so we get a lot of wood and wolf spiders here, I have found some mutant looking spiders in my basement that have me a little worried that they could possibly come up and visit my bed and I wouldn't be happy with that lol I haven't had a spider bite so far. You're spider is pretty neat but I'm glad he is at your house and not mine lol.

My Pet Spider. He's Really Cool. - It's amazing to see this spider at work. He knows how to survive in this crazy world.
Even though I like spiders, if this spider ran across my neck and down my arm, it would be lights out. lol What in the world is a "Wolf Spider"? Do they roam in packs? lol Regarding the spiders you found in your basement, be thankful for them. They prevent other insects from invading you house. Glad you think my Spider is pretty neat and I'm glad he is a member of my household. Thanks for your reply. Lloyd

Wow! That spider needs a leash. I must admit, I'm glad my spider isn't that large. I still wouldn't kill it though, but I'd make sure he finds another place to live other than in my basement. Hope you aren't having nightmares. lol Lloyd

He is huge. I have spent years trying to overcome my fear of spiders. When I was younger I was so scared of spiders I could not walk past them for fear that they would jump at me. I once had a spider jump at me from the letter box and it hit me in the chest and that was really scary. If I saw a spider inside the house I would ask someone to get rid of it for me. My father would catch it and put it outside. Then I learned to kill them and I used to kill any spider that got too close to me. especially in my bedroom. For years I killed every spider that came into the house. I never minded the ones outside. Now I have overcome my fear mostly and I can walk past one without getting nervous. I still do not like them in my bedroom but I will try and put it outside rather than kill it.

He is huge. But he isn't the baddest creator in my yard. Just this morning a bumble bee got caught in his web and the fight was on. The bumble bee was finally able to escape after putting up a tremendous fight. I'm glad you were able to overcome your fear of spiders. It's good that you put them back outside instead of killing them. Good work. Thanks. Lloyd

I am glad that I overcame my fear and can now live without killing them. I have a healthy respect for them now which is much better than fear of them. As to why we are afraid of them I think it is because they are fast and when they run on your skin they feel unpleasant. Well some people regard it as unpleasant. Others keep spiders as pets and like them. The fight with the bumblebee sounds interesting. I am glad it got away but it sounds like an interesting challenge for a spider to take on a stinging insect like that. I saw a spider get a fly the other day but bees are tougher than flies. Now I see spiders as important members of the world we live in, but it was hard to overcome the fear and learn to respect their place in the world.

Well, he is not a Spider I would call a Pet, as I am afraid of spiders and usually panic when I see one, especially if they are bigger. But if you like seeing him then that is good, as I do know people who have Spiders for pets. Just glad I do not have to come around.

Hi Lloyd, My brother was telling me a few days ago how he has been watching a spider, and what interesting creatures they are. I have never really observed them for any length of time but I think there is much that we can learn from all creatures, also I'm sure it would be interesting. I've never been bitten by one and I've never been afraid of them or try to kill them. Blessings.

They are very interesting creatures. If you get a chance, just observe one for a few minutes. They are master builders. They can survive in the strangest environments. And they are some tough SOBs. I'm glad you are not afraid of them and don't kill them. They play an important role in our environment. Lloyd

Spider - This is a Carolina Wolf spider.
I have to admit that spiders are not my favorite creatures. Especially if they come indoors. Outdoors, I love the pretty webs that the orb weavers build. When I lived in an apartment long ago, we had a lovely spider (yellow and black) that built a beautiful web and attached it to the brick and to the awning. I wasn't afraid of it at all. One day, the postman knocked on the door to give me a package, and before I knew it, he sprayed the web and spider with pepper spray! I couldn't believe he did that! I loved looking at the pretty web she built daily. Inside, though, I hate spiders! We have Carolina Wolf spiders and more often that I would like, they have gotten inside. I was sitting in my recliner one night, all relaxed and reading my book, when out of nowhere, something heavy dropped onto the arm of my chair. It was a wolf spider; when I looked at it, it turned and looked at me and bent something like a sumo wrestler would! lol In one liquid motion, I went over the opposite arm of the chair. My Mom said she didn't know I was quite that acrobatic! lol I was bitten by a spider once in the supermarket. I was putting some greens into a bag when I felt the bite. There were two tiny litle holes in my wrist. It started swelling and itching, but it was ok. I never did see the spider. I'm attaching a photo of the Carolina Wolf Spider...just so you can see what made me so acrobatic! lol

That is a beautiful spider. I have never heard of the Carolina Wolf Spider. Thanks for sharing the photo. Isn't it just amazing at their ability to build such beautiful webs? I can't believe your mailman used the nucleur option to deal with the spider. I guess he's seen his share of spiders and just has a low tolerance for these amazing creatures. Did the spider die? Did you know that you had such acrobatic abilities? lol I'm glad you didn't get ill from your spider bite. Thanks for your reply. Lloyd

I'm so sorry to hear that you were biten by a Black Widow Spider. I'm glad my pet spider is not of that species. Not all spiders are venomous. They do provide some benefits. They keep the insect population down. I don't know why my first picture of my pet spider didn't download correctly. Here is another photo I took on Saturday. Lloyd

Spiders are fascinating creatures. I have watched them construct their webs, or reconstruct them. And to think they did not take engineering! They are environmentally good and careful. I don't remember if I have ever been bitten. I have never been afraid of them or any of the other little creatures who co-exist with me. It is to me, funny that where ever I have worked I was the one who had to "rescue" the creatures who made the mistake of entering the buildings. Everyone else was afraid to do anything.

Spiders are very fascinating creatures. Besides the one in the front of my house, I have two other regulars in my backyard. There's one that lives on the knob I use to cut on my garden hose and there is one that lives about 3 feet below it. Everytime I go to cut the garden hose on, he runs into the wall and waits for me to leave. The other one hides and wait for bugs to fall on his web. He bites them about 4 or five times, then spin them into his web. As you can tell, I've spent a lot of idle time watching the fascinating creators. I'm like you. I don't think I could just step on a spider. If one get's in my way, I'll try and brush it outside. Thanks for your reply. Lloyd

ohhh....When I was young, I used to accompany my male cousins haunting spiders..LOL! Anyway, I am not scared of it, I will even touch some and once you will not hurt them, they will not bite you too! We have no spiders in the house or in the backyard...I have not seen any maybe because I always sweep around and wipe the ceiling or any part of the house which they love to hang out!

But I don't like spiders much. I feel some of them can be poisonous and can be harmful if touched (I may be wrong for few species, but I don't know, how to identify the poisonous ones from un-harming species and I think, it is better to be cautious then be sorry later) or even if crushed accidentally and their body fluids come in contact to our skin. Therefore, there is no question of having a pet spider by me (or even i don't like the idea itself).

Will go door knocking if hubbby isn't home to get my neighbor to execute it. Seriously!

Close Up Of Praying Mantis - Mantises are exclusively predatory and their diet usually consists of living insects; larger species have been known to prey on small lizards, frogs, birds, snakes, and even rodents.

Most mantises are ambush predators, waiting for prey to stray too near. The mantis then lashes out at remarkable speed. Some ground and bark species, however, pursue their prey rather quickly.

Prey are caught and held securely with grasping, spiked forelegs ("raptorial legs"); the first thoracic segment, the prothorax, is commonly elongated and flexibly articulated, allowing for greater range of movement of the front limbs while the remainder of the body remains more or less immobile.
I can't believe you don't like Praying Mantis. Now that's a cool insect. They also can make a nice pet. Do you know in some states it's against the law to kill them? Hopefully will get over your fear of the "gentle" spider and other cute pets like snakes and praying mantis. lol Try and put them outside instead of executing them. You'll feel better later on. Seriously. lol Lloy7d

Spiders - arachnophilia
Lloyd, sorry, but I am so afraid of spiders and any critter that crawls. And speaking of praying mantises, I am so afraid of them. I remember when I was in grade school, I came home one day to find a small white box on my outside steps. Being the nosey child I was, I decided to open it, even though I did not know whose box it was. When I opened it a 9 inch praying mantis came strutting out. I screamed and dropped the box, but I dropped it in my path and was then afraid to go up the stairs. My mother came out to see what was happening, and laughingly said you better put that man's praying mantis back in the box. Evidently a nearby worker, had caught a praying mantis to take home to munch on his bugs. Then my dog came over to see what was going on. Him and the mantis decided to have a fist fight. The mantis was holding his own against the dog. they boxed for a while, which distracted the mantis, and gave me a chance to run up the stairs. The dog finally gave up, I guess it was a draw. Lesson for me was never to open something that was not mine, you never know what you may find. Did you give you big black hairy friend a name? Three years, you must have very delicious food around your house for him.

Hi Lloyd, Spiders!!!! They send a chill down my spine! I am absolutely terrified of spiders. I just don't know what it is about them. I think it's definitely the way they move and crawl, especially all those hairy legs! The worst thing for me is when I'm at home. I would find a spider on the ceiling and I'm just so afraid to sit in the chair below! I wouldn't kill the spider, I would always try and capture it in a bit of tissue or something and then release it outside. The only problem is, when they are on the ceiling, if you try to catch them they immediately drop off, and my worst fear is that the critter will land on my head, I will end up having a heart attack! I guess I don't understand spiders and spiders don't understand me. Why do we need spiders? Could they not have been created less scary? Andrew

I truly hope that you will oneday be able to overcome your fear of spiders. No. They couldn't have been created any less scary. Scaring people are what spiders do. lol You should read Hately's reply to discussion about the rubber spider that scared her. Thanks for your reply. Have a good night and don't let the spiders bite. Thanks Lloyd. Please don't send me a virtual spider through the Internet, I'll collapse! I watched the news today and it's funny that we are talking about spiders and all of a sudden, they are saying that some company has built a fifty food spider to be displayed in Liverpool! The cost to create the thing was close to a million pounds or something as it is kind of a machine and moves!! Why did they have to do that for!! Oh won't be visiting Liverpool! Anyway, I hope I overcome my spider phobia somehow, someday. Thanks Lloyd. Andrew

I could say that I'm not afraid of spiders because the ones which I often see are smaller than the thumb of my hand. And I've never been bitten by one, big or small. But if I ever see a spider like the one you attached a photo here, I will definitely have second thoughts on touching or disturbing it; more so if it would jump and crawl on me. But I remember seeing spiders as big as my hand several times. I admit that I do feel scared thinking that they might bite me or just crawl over me. I don't have the courage to kill these big ones. Locally, the folks here catch spiders and engage them in fights particularly in the provinces. They are placed on a broomstick and the first spider to fall on the ground loses. Usually, there are bets involved in this game and most of the participants are the guys. I guess this is one way to let the time pass by. As a wife, I do encounter spiders often while I'm cleaning the house. Whenever I can, I catch them, and clean their webs away with them. It's not a great sight to see black and dirty webs all over the house.

That spider in the picture is as afraid of you as you could ever be afraid of him. He is a big and juicy one. Even though he's been like a member of my family for over 3 years, I don't want him jumping and crawling on me either. I'm like you, I don't kill spiders. I try to sweep them out of ther house if I see one. You aren't the first one to mention spider fights. I've never heard of spider fights here in the United States. Lloyd

We used to catch spiders and keep them in matchboxes and have them fight with other spiders. There are some really agile and powerful spiders out there. Spiders are poisonous and some are dangerous even to humans. We used to handle spiders like they were pets but if they meet someone more capable in combat they wind up as a meal for that other ferocious spider.

Spiders are very smart. They do build their webs in places where they can catch a meal. It's almost as if they do a survey of the area. I'm glad you don't kill spiders. I also remove spider webs. They can become unsightly if you don't remove them occassionally. Lloyd
