do your baby or small child suck their thumb?

Many babies love to have something to suck on, and that one thing is usually their their thumb. Many mothers will pull the thumb out of the baby's mouth and stick a pacifier in. Does your baby suck his/her thumb, and if so, do you try to break that habit? Do you substitute the thumb for a pacifier? How old was your child when they stopped the habit. My sister used to suck her two middle fingers, my mother try everything from hot sauce to socks, she eventually stopped.

My younger sister is 14 right now. She has (and I sometimes think always will!) suck her fingers. It's really strange though - she sucks her ring and pinky finger on her right hand. She use to be really bad about it when she was younger, but she has a lot gotten better. Every now and then you can still catch her with her fingers in her mouth when she gets tired. My mom tried EVERYTHING to get her to stop, but nothing worked!

I have a grown married friend who still sucks her thumb. She likes to suck her thumb and rub something silk at the same time. It used to be funny to see her driving her car, with her thumb in her mouth and she always had a piece of silk cloth with her.
