My First Time! ...

Might not be what you expect: I recently went to a drive-in movie for the first time with my boyfriend and a few of his friends. You always hear people say drive-in movies are for couples making out and going on dates as well as other romantic things. It turns out all my assumptions were almost completely wrong! First of all, the drive-in theater was, in no way shape or form, romantic to the slightest degree; but maybe I should start from the beginning... My boyfriend and I drove to the theater and met up with his friends before entering. We wait in line for about half hour, moving about an inch or two every few minutes to get to the entrance where we had to pay for tickets and entry. The lady asked if we had any food or beverage with us. I had a bottle of water that was half empty. She rudely informed me that I had to pay an extra $7.00 to take it into the theater area. I said I didn't want to pay it so she yelled that I'd have to dump the rest of it out. I handed her the bottle and she looked at me with a blank look on her face and said, "You have to remove the cap!" I removed the cap, and went to dump it out beside the car, but she snatched it out of my hands and dumped it a few feet away. I guess they didn't want liquid in the roadway, but she didn't have to be so rude about it. Anyway, we drove into the yard in front of the screen. There were dozens of people already there in the better parking slots. We pulled up near the back. Against my assumptions, everyone got out of the car and sat out in the field with lawn chairs and blankets and such, or just on top of their vehicle. We had to turn the radio on inside the car to a special station to hear the movie. Finally I get a bit comfortable in the lawn chair my boyfriend brought for me. I had to put a long-sleeved shirt on even though it was almost 100 degrees, and very humid, because there were so many bugs, including mosquitoes, that seemed to love my skin. The bug spray, citronella candles, and anything else we tried didn't seem very effective, unfortunately. There were three movies being shown. The first movie was a kid's movie from Disney, which seemed a bit cute, but was almost over by the time we'd finally gotten parked, bought some concessions, set up our chairs and radios, and everything else that went into preparation for us to watch the drive-in movie. The second movie started. This was the one my boyfriend and his friends were all eager to see. I wasn't really too excited but didn't mind watching the movie. So, I get cozy in my chair and finally a nice cool breeze starts to set in finally. I relax and tune in to the movie, enjoying myself, snacking on nachos and some soda my boyfriend bought for us. A little bit after the movie started, cars are still driving up and down the aisles trying to park if they just arrived. Some people had been there for awhile but were trying to find better parking since some people had left. Apparently, most people cannot park their vehicle very well either. I witnessed many people who could barely pull correctly into a parking space. Granted, it was a little tight, but one shouldn't have to back up and straighten out their car more than a couple times, and it shouldn't take fifteen minutes for anyone just to park a vehicle! So, I'm sitting there trying to watch a movie peacefully. Instead, I get headlights shining into my eyes (even though they were not supposed to be on inside the yard because it disturbs the movie-goers), loud cars with smelly exhaust driving by every few minutes, people walking all over the place, sometimes standing directly in your view, and other annoyances! Needless to say, it wasn't the best movie experience I've ever had. It was not very comfortable, not very relaxing, not very convenient, and I really don't know why anyone would enjoy this. I'd rather just go to a regular theater and pay an extra few bucks for the ticket or renting a movie and watching it at home. It's worth it since I know a million bugs won't be trying to eat me alive and I have little chance of being blinded by or run over by a car.

Drive-ins are a fun place to go, too bad so many of them have disappeared You describe it all so well, though! The problem for you not knowing why anyone would think it was such a great place for couples is that you and your boyfriend not only met up with his buddies, you all planned on watching the movies As a teenager the drive-in was the place to go just to neck. Hell, we didn't even know what movie was playing

Drive in movies were the way to go back in the 50's when I was a teenager. Every Friday night was $1 per car load and that meant every kid you could get in a car. Usually that's when a bunch of the boys would go out. Otherwise it was just me and my gal which one of them became my first wife. Those were the days.

I remember those dollar days. It always amazed me just how many kids from a neighborhood could fit into one station wagon. Ahh, the simple pleasures of life

That sounds just like a terrible experience. We no longer have drive in movies here in New Jersey, but I remember when we did. I used to love them. We were never checked and you could bring in anything you wanted. We never did bring in anything though because there was something special about going up to the food stand and buying popcorn, hotdogs and a soda. Wow! I wish I had some popcorn, a hotdog and a soda right now. lol We were young and not everyone was able to afford to pay for the tickets, so sometimes a few of my friends would sneek through a hole in the fence and join us later. We always had a good time. It was during the era of Bruce Lee and the martial arts movies. Nothing better than watching Bruce Lee kick butt on the big screen. Lloyd

We had a drive in where I grew up too. I wasn't really a good place to make out at all. It was too loud and bright and people were constantly walking around and kids were running around. I did actually watch a few good movies there, though. When it came time to make out, we would just go park out in the woods...

As I live in Britain, not in the US, I don't see that many drive ins at all. In fact I think I have only ever seen two in my life. I think it would be fun to go to one though, but I wouldn't have very high expectations at all now you've said that about them! I'd just go for the experience so that I could say that I had been to one :)

Maybe it is better elsewhere, but my experience obviously wasn't pleasant.

There's no such thing as that in my area (or maybe in my genre, maybe they had that before ~ but I haven't seen or been to one). Anyhow, how much is the price difference between a movie ticket and the drive-in movie? The experience you got gave me the thought that it was really a horrible thing to put yourself into. :) It was just funny because if you needed to go out of the car and sit on the lawn, doing that at home or just watching in the movie houses was the same thing, I thought people just stayed inside of their cars to avoid bugs and all those fumes. But I guess it's much cheaper to watch 3 movies instead of only 1. Anyhow, at least you could say you tried it.

Wow, reading this reminded me of going to a drive with my boyfriend (long ago ex-boyfriend), but it was pretty much as you described it. Except we didn't have a lawn area or too many bugs - probably because it was in San Diego. Definitely not romantic. We did have to pull the speaker to the car and the sound was terrible. So I remember walking around a lot by the bathrooms and snack area. I don't even remember what movie it was.

We don't have drive-in movie theatres here - too cold and miserable. But if that's the way that you get treated then I'm not too sorry that I've not been. LOL. I grew up in the 60s and US TV shows shown in the UK were full of teenagers heading off to the drive in. I wonder what they did there? LOL.. Indoors is best. Air conditioning and no mossies!

When I was a teenage, my boyfriend and I always went to the drive-in to make out. We parked in the very back row so no one would disturb us. Back then, families usually took the front couple of rows. The kid's movies were always shown first, then they could leave, and being in the front let them do that. Even when we were with friends, we sat inside the car. Never knew anyone to sit outside. (Although some drive-ins did have swing sets for kids who were bored with the movie.) We didn't bring food or drinks in because everything was so cheap back then. A couple could see 3 movies and have popcorn and drinks for about $3-4. We have a drive-in near us, but hubby and I haven't been there. Sometimes our church has a movie night and they'll all head out to the drive-in, but we haven't been able to make it yet.

It sounds a terrible experience the drive in movie. See there is no harm in enjoying drive in movie in some amusement park where these facilities are available. I do not know the place you visited was not properly regulated or it was overcrowded allowed by the admin. I otherwise feel convenient to see a movie at home. We can hire CD for few bucks and enjoy it at home.

We also went to a drive in this summer, we took the kids and it was definitly not a great experience for us. Back in the day cars were much roomier than today, which made it uncomfortable for us, and the kids complained alot. It started late - of course it had to be dark first lol, but if we stayed for both shows (you pay for a double feature either way) we would have gotten home probably about 3AM!! Definitly not good with kids. It was an experience for sure, maybe not one I need to do again though!
