I was practically weaned on the appreciation of dance and have studied dance myself....including yes, ballet. I remember from an early age my grandmother and mother introduced me to the world of ballet for instance.. Since I live in the NYC area, I so remember so vividly seeing The Nutcracker..practically a Christmas event...Swan Lake, Firebird....As a girl I had visions of also being a world renown ballet dancer..uh, well, that wasn't to be, but I still love watching ballet. Now I haven't been to a ballet performance in eons...hey, tickets are darn expensive....but through the magic of the internet and YouTube one can watch fragments of one's favorite ballet performances. Then just tonight, I was hunting around YouTube and came across this performance by a Russian ballet dancer named Polina Seminova...OMG...she's fantastic...this isn't your typical ballet performance as it is set to rather pop/jazz-y kind of music...but fantastic to watch....so I wanted to share it with you. Sit back and relax for some great dancing {Warning: This is NOT a referral link..but a video from Youtube} http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uz2Gp7a38DM So...do you appreciate dance of any kind...particularly ballet..like I said I did study ballet, modern dance and so forth....I too love to dance

Hi, pyewacket. I studied dance for a while when I was younger. I loved the beautiful ballerinas but being a mere 5'4" I never let myself go down the road of dreaming about being one myself. I learned early one that maintaining my dance lessons helped to keep me fit and flexible, making me better at the things I was good at doing. I visited NYC recently, and stayed for over a week in the Hudson Valley area. I wish I had thought to contact you and invite you to lunch. Next time, perhaps.

I used to do Yoga years ago.... I actually started doing it as a kid as I watched my mother do it when she watched some yoga instructor on tv....it came very naturally to to me... I wouldn't have money for taking classes....but think I can remember some of the exercises I used to do...now to just have TIME! LOL

No, I can be in the city in under an hour if I catch an express train. I love to visit my family and train into the city. I love a Queens accent. You should definitely do that class. Have you ever considered Pilates or Yoga? The developer fo pilates developed for dancers.

To be honest I didn't study ballet until believe it or not I was in my college years, but did other forms of dance prior to that. My mother DID want me to study ballet when I was very young and she was hoping that her uncle might foot (no pun intended) the bill...as she wanted me to go to the best...the same ballet school as the American School of Ballet...but he was a cheapskate and never did (believe me he had the money--just didn't want to part with it much)

What a great dance video! Wouldn't that be a thrill to have an entire stage all to yourself to dance on?!?!?! WOW! I LOVE ballet! When I was a kid my mother used to make me dance for her friends, who were mostly not interested in watching an 8 year old dance, and she also sent me to ballet class. The thing is, at that time I was more interested in building tree forts and playing boisterous games with my friends. My mother would call me in from all my fun and I would HAVE to go to ballet class, where all the little girls were so dainty and clean and dressed in pink ribbons and bows. Gawd, I felt like an alien! Needless to say I lost all interest in dancing for quite a while. Then when I was about 17 I saw a ballet on PBS that hooked me back into it. Of course then I got to spend the next dozen years regretting that I had not pursued ballet instruction as a child! Oh well, this is actually a better time for me to be studying ballet anyway... I no longer have a bunch of friends hollering outside my door for me to come out and play and it gives me something to do in my dotage that I feel passionate about. I have a ballet video for beginners that I like to practice, but I really like belly dancing too! Those Veena & Neena 'exercise' videos are very fun. I am including a link to a solo performance by Veena that comes at the end of one of their videos. Their costumes are fabulous! They get them from Turkey. I would like to order a few of them myself! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biViVzIBlLk&feature=related

I just related elsewhere here that while I was into a lot of forms of dance, I didn't study ballet until...gasps...my college days! It was more just for fun and I never reached the point (no pun intended) where I could dance en pointe, meaning on my toes...something like that one needs to be trained very young...I should at least get back to doing barre exercises, since many stretches are like Yoga and might loosen my ever stiffening limbs...oh, and as far as belly dancing...that would be a GREAT way to exercise the stomach area..

I saw your post elsewhere about the "barre" exercises that ballet dancers do..I'm just betting YouTube has some kind of instructional video of basic exercises

Sigh... What a beautiful dance pye. (By the way. we also have the same nickname, mine is without an e though. ) I love ballet... I actually love dancing like you. I'm a frustrated ballerina. Lol. I've always always wanted to take ballet lessons but whenever I'd tell my parents, my mom would tell me that my legs would "get bigger". My dad didn't mind then but since my mom said no, he had to agree as well. Sigh. So I had no choice but to watch in the background. I did develop my dancing skills though. I can do modern, jazz, ethnic and ballroom dancing. Salsa and Rhumba is really nice. Flamenco is another type of dance that I've been practicing on. Very sultry and sexy.

Don't ask how late I went to bed...I got a bit addicted watching one ballet video after another...LOL. I was even able to find a few really old videos of Maria Tallchief...the only Native American ballerina...my mother had seen her in Firebird...must have been spectacular--think when she was younger she saw a lot of the greats including Margot Fontaine

Wow! What a treat, pyewacket. Her grace and fluidity of movement are something to behold. I was adamant that I would watch this video(on your recommendation), even though it took me 3 attempts to finally succeed. I had to reinstall my flash player but it was well worth it.

If you still have the anxiety and will to dance your self or see dancing you can perform. The dancing perhaps is a practice and if you stop practicing for a longer period your speed to dance will come down and you may not compete with the music in such faster speed as you were in earlier age.

After that video I started watching a lot of ballet videos...amazing how many there are over at YouTube. From what I'm gathering, that ballerina is one of the top ones in the world now....was watching some of her other performances as well.

Well Pye, I also did want to be a ballerina when I grew up! That was until I started taking dancing lessons and didn't like the shoes because they hurt! What did I know, I was only 5! Didn't have much tolerance then either! So there went the ballet career and the tap too! Tried that at the same time. I had fun for awhile, but got bored with that quickly. Wasn't very good sticking to anything ever. Took violin and flute too. Same thing. Too hard, not comfy! Been going through my whole life that way. It's amazing I even finished high school and started college-no didn't finish that either. But I do love to watch ballet and I did like to dance until the arthritis took over the knees! But even that wouldn't stop me if I was in the mood! Will check out the video, I promise!

I'm beginning to think I should go back to doing some of the ballet barre type exercises and Yoga again....haven't done it in years...it did keep me flexible and "fluid" in movement..in fact I just got this book called Yoga for Arthritis..which is just one of the books I'm reading now. Heehee...I'm actually the opposite...I usually always finish anything I start, even if it takes me awhile...I studied violin as well...then later learned guitar...just don't have time to play anymore though...so much more of my time is with writing now.
