What are you doing to preserve the earth?

I hear a lot of people saying that we should clean up our act because our earth is suffering or because we have to do our part to save the environment. But when you ask these same people what they've done, they don't have a ready response. Personally, I try my best to use the least amount of energy but turning everything off and unplugging things I'm not using when I'm not home, I turn the water off while I'm brushing my teeth, I re-use plastic bags and try not to throw them away and finally, I put small pieces of trash I have in my pocket and then throw them away when there's trash can. It may not be much, but it's a start. So now I ask you, what have you done to help the earth?

well. right now the only thing i'm doing to minimize consumption of power, that is turning off lights, and a/c that are not needed, and also not wasting water.. at home i already started putting up some solar garden lamps, at least to save some electricity.. later on i'm planning to set-up a small solar panel system for our perimeter lights... i've been researching idea on how to be greener.. in work, i'm re-using papers to save consumption.. i also encourage my fellow co-workers to do the same.. (if there is no need to print e-mails, just read them).. at home, i will be starting to collect rain water for re-using like cleaning or watering the plants (i already made our drainage to let grey water water our plants).. these are some simple few things we can start on..

That's a great start! I'm researching on solar panels and alternative energy sources but they all seem to cost a great amount now.

Check out a solar hot water heater it is relatively inexpensive and will reduce energy costs substantially. This is a very efficient way to heat the water for your home.

yes, still the solar panel systems cost a lot.. i went to "raon in quiapo" and they gave me some estimates for a basic system.. if you are interested in making your own solar water heater and everything about solar, you can visit this site: www.builditsolar.com/Projects/WaterHeating/water_heating.htm

I also re-use plastic bags. More than that I make it an option to actually have my goods wrapped - if there are only a few items then I ask the clerk to keep the plastic so I could just put them all in my bag or hold on to my items by myself. I also close the lights when I don't use them and use florescent light because even though the bulbs are more expensive, they consume less energy and they last longer :) Thanks for the comment on my discussion!

I guess it's the small things that count. Keep it up! If everybody does what you do, we will have a cleaner and greener world. Thanks for the response!

I agree that people seem to avoid becoming environmental conscious for whatever reason. Whether it is too time consuming or too inconvenient. I always try to influence many friends and family members to get involved environmentally to clean up our World with mixed results. There is so much that can be done with little to no effort like just conserving energy usage, which will result in lowers carbon emissions levels in our atmosphere. Recycling will do the same because plastic for instance is made from oil. So get the word out and help the environment by using the 3 R's; Reuse, Recycle, and Reduce.

When I was a kid, they taught us in pre-school the 3 R's. I still follow those 3 R's until now
