Color My World

New Project -
This is a photo of the afghan I started, but I'm not sure if I'm going to stick with this pattern. I like the colors, but I'm not sold on the stitch.

Some of you remember I posted that I wanted to start a new project with the yarn I bought (brown, white, aqua) and I was debating on what pattern to use. I started it yesterday and I really like the pattern, but it is way too thick and uses up much more yarn than normal. It is strictly fpdc and bpds (front post double crochet/back post double crochet) so that's why it's so thick, because part of the stitch comes down over the previous row (and also why it uses so much yarn). Anyway, I've posted a pic here of what I've done so far, and I do like how I varied the stripes, and I like how the f/bpdc almost looks like the colors are woven together where the color changes, but I hate that it's so thick, and its stretchy too. It's just an odd feeling that is hard to describe, like two afghans together or something. I think I'm going to start a swatch with a different stitch and see which I like better. I'll post a picture of that one too when I get it done. Opinions?

The colors are pretty though I understand the dilemma.....it would be a very heavy blanket! Hope you find one that you are happy with...

I'm debating on the same old ripple, or one other that I've done quite a bit off. I'm going to try to get a swatch done up tonight.

Have you ever done those mile a minute ones? I think that's what they are called...some of those are very pretty and don't take long to complete...

No, I don't like those. I can't stand having to do one that you have to stitch together. Straight back and forth for me! (That's why I don't do granny squares either).

Beautiful colours but I'm sorry to say I don't know much/anything about crocheting But good luck!

The colors are pretty together and I like the look of it, but I'm with you. That particular stitch doesn't appeal to me for an afghan. A hounds tooth would give you almost the same look but it wouldn't be as thick and stretchy. The stitch you're using seems like it would be easier to snag than a flatter stitch.

Yes, hounds tooth would give me that look for sure! I've never done it, though, so will have to give that one a look. Thanks!

Easy as can be. Just dip every 4th or 5th stitch (or however many you want in between) into the row below.

So that would be the fpdc (front post double crochet), but just do it every so many stitches?

I'm making an afghan, but I may or may not continue with that particular pattern. I like the way it looks, but it's just not 'right'.

A plain single or double crochet would be just that, too plain. Thanks, though.

I do too, but the problem isn't the colors, it's what stitch to use.

I don't work outside the home and it's just Tom and I here (and he sleeps a lot - meds), so my time is pretty much my own.

I think its a very attractive looking stitch, almost "herringbone" in appearance. I do know about not liking the feel and if one uses too much yard, the project will take twice as much. it would probably be a very warm afgan - not something we need in Texas.

Yes, it does look almost like herringbone, and I wish I could find a pattern for something similar.

I'm going to be working up a swatch or two and will probably post pictures so I can get help in deciding what to do.

I love the color combo! I don't crochet, so I'm not going to much of a help when it comes to selecting stitches You did well with your yarn choice, good luck with your stitch choice!

Yes, I do love the colors too, but I'm working on a different pattern now. And this one is too THIN! I need to find something that will be a happy medium. I could do the basic ripple again, but wanted a change.

Hi again - I really like the color scheme and the pattern you used. But, if you think it is way too thick then I guess you should try a different stitch, like you said. Let me know if you work it out by trying something different with it. Hope it turns out ok. Have fun!

Hey ldyj, I love it! Like the stich and the colors are great! Love the Blue and Brown and White together! I'm so damn jealous! I never was able to learn how to crochet or knit. My aunt was great at both and I just never could learn. My girlfriend tried to teach me too. No luck, was hopeless! Just not talented in that department. But you sure are. Really, I love the way it looks already. Can't wait to see what's next!

I don't do any of the real complicated stuff with too much counting, the things I do are very simple. I have taught people to do what I do that haven't been able to be taught before, so I would make a bet that I could have you doing the basic stitches within an hour.

Well, I think it's very nice and the colors are great. I would do that one but you never know maybe you want to do both when you start the other one. LOL I can hear it now you on the way to go buy more yarn LOL. have a nice day. Your friend Onlydia

No, as much as I think this one is very pretty, it won't work with this particular stitch throughout. Much too thick and stretchy, plus uses 1.5 times the yarn a normal pattern would. I can't justify that.

Before I even get to see the picture, I know I love the color combination. My swimsuit has those colors. I have not crocheted in years, but I have done some patterns similar. It seemed as if it took forever.

Yes, I like the colors too, and while the stitch LOOKS great, it just isn't working. I don't think I'll be using this stitch, and I've already started working on some others before I decide what to do.

Hi Ldyjarhead... It is a very nice pattern and the colors go well together...I've never done this stitch so I don't know about the thickness.... It depends on how big you want to make it too! Make a swatch like you said and see which one you like best.. It is very pretty though the way you are doing it...

It's going to be tough, because I do like the look of this stitch, but the texture and thickness is just way off. I'm still playing with things.
