I have a DVD/CD-RW, this is what is shown in My Computers. I insert a Blank DVD and the drive gives a whirling sound along with flash for atleast 10-15 seconds. But then, it just stops. So, I have atleast 20 Gb of matter to be transferred to the DVD, so I am not getting what to do. I have Windows XP Professional SP3, DVD/CD-RW drive and I am using DVD-R.

Hardware errors are most likely due to functionality failures Look for any likely cause like if you haven't cleaned the drive yet, it might be dirty. Else check the disc if its the faulty one, try other disc to read/write. Hmmm, as of now that is what is best to check out.

Is this the first time that you have experienced this? Or has the same thing happened with other CDs/DVDs? If the same thing is happening with different disks then it's likely that your DVD/CD-RW drive is slowly starting to fade out. However, there are things that you can try like cleaning the drive. Also, check device manager and have a look to see if you have any graphic symbols being displayed in relation to your drive. Good luck anyway. Andrew

As previously mentioned here, if you have combo drive then you cant burn dvd'd but only cd's. try loading a cd rewritable to test if it works. if it does then you got a combo drive, and even try loading a dvd which already has data. if it fails to read than its hardware problem, try using lens cleaner and try again. as the cd/dvd is used many time its lens(laser) power decreases and hence cd /dvd device find difficult to read cd/dvd's or even fail to read..
