philippines by history is a country with high literacy rate..and manila once became a well known city for his richness, actually many japanese and chinese nationals work here at that time..how come we have been left behind having that advantage other countries dont have? now instead of being a producer we end up being a end up user or consumer...where are these intellectuals this nation has produced...do they served and give their knowledge for the interest of other countries while the country that give them such knowledge and education are left being in a state of brain drained..how long shall we stay being dependent by other countries technology knowing we too can do such..

I guess its our attitude towards something that is foreign must be good way of thinking is what made us end users than producers. We tend to patronize more of this imported products than our own local products resulting to poorer produce because they are not being patronized locally. Where have been the intellectuals gone, maybe they were all exported as well. The migration of so many intellectuals to find greener pastures are the ones that made things even worse. Brain drain is causing other countries benefit more from our countrymen that sell their ideas to foreigners just because they were left neglected in our place because we always look forward seeing foreign rather than appreciating our own.

i think this concern should be in the countries agenda to address possible future consequences of this issue otherwise the thing which should be for us was rather given to others and they are the one who were benefited through this kind of set up our country is overlooking much...see everything around us,,,most of them came from other country rather than producing them here...what kind of people are we?were a bunch of useless and lazy people if that will be so...

Well i guess the change must start from each and everyone of us. Our willingness to change this attitude is what will make things go for the better.

First off, these countries have qualities that our country lacks. They have inspiration and dedication. If we are focused and centered on our goals then we can achieve limitless possibilites. We have great minds here in the Philippines and all it takes for our country to benefit from these people is for them to be dedicated to their cause and our country. Also, they won't be able to fuel their minds if they're the least bit inspired in pursuing their goals. Another example would be contribution both from them and the government. If they are interested and motivated, it wouldn't do the us any good if they won't contribute to the country. Also, our government should at least fund their research for them to further our country's goal.

truly there are great minds among the Filipino people and the fact is we are winning on some scientific competition, whether if it is in invention or in the field of research and in math field too..and we have a list of these people who made to put their name in this field..maybe the reason for these problem lies on the lack of political drive in support for these endeavors..

With regards to your question, i see no problem with that. In the first place we don't have enough technology to be able to compete with other high-tech nations. And for us to be able to have that, it entails a lot of money. Let's be real here. The reason why Filipinos leave the country is that they don't see Philippines as place where they could hone their skills. If they choose to be here, there is a high risk that they could get unnoticed and it would be another waste of talent. I'd rather see my fellow Kababayans go to other countries and let their talents put into good and productive use than be stuck here hungry waiting for the government to acknowledge their work.

if only there will be a great political drive on these endeavors, i see no reason for our country to one of the great nation who became great because of technology, then theres no need for us to work in a far away land leaving our loved ones behind..that's a great risk our fellow filipinos is going through..

It's sad but what else can everyone do? You can't rely on the masses, they're too scared and hungry to do anything. You can't rely on the elite, they're too busy making money and have no time for trivial things!

i believe these people who work abroad do not actually want to go and leave their, love one behind, they just dont have any choice or option to earn enough money here, because our government are not pushing for more radical steps in pursuit of a real solution in addressing this need of the working class, they are just waiting for foreign investor to do business in the country, sad to say we wait for investor and not us doing the investing..

it was because of our leader can't stand with their own, they always dependent on other country specially USA. if from the start we never dependent maybe until now we live our own without any influence from other culture, nations and leaders. we are rich not only in minerals but also knowledge but they are now used by other countries. we can't blame to them because they look for a green pasture unlike living here with no support from our government.

the thing is surely hard to correct now, but we need to start and that is the work and must be priority of the government if they really want a lasting prosperity for our country

The great minds of our country are leaving the motherland. A lot of smart Filipinos who have studied here or who have studied abroad usually don't stay here in the Philippines. They would rather be in some other country that gives better pay. Big companies abroad spend big money on the people who are really smart here and then have them develop technology for them. I think this is the main reason why there is lack of development in our own technology sector. There is not enough support and financial backing for technology development in our country.

friend you are actually telling it right, we dont have the proper backbone on this technology thing and instead of producing we end up to be just a mere buyer of things that we dont know are made by our own people which the other countries has seen their potentials..

Hello arnoldream, We are left behind in technology because of our upbringing. We are teaching our kids to study and work for others. We should reverse these system and start from the beginning. In the USA, they teach their youngster to innovate and invent new thing to improve life. They teach their kids how to think and solve problem, not like us where we teach them items they don't need. It's more like for show, you are learn but for what? to work with other and use other stuff. I heard Chinese teach their kids to study and get a degree and go into business. I think if we change our mentality of working for others we will grow and see more inventions and innovation from the younger generations. Not politics, showbusiness and being servant of the world. We can change and it take guts and teamwork. We can start with us and then teach them to our children. Have a great day. Regards.

that is a great point you have there friend, and i do like it because i believe the same thing you have said, filipinos are mold and trained to be merely to work, and few and rare are those who were trained for scientific and business related endeavors, what is the mindset of our student today. is it not to finished school and then work for abroad...what a pity for our young generation..

Hi there arnoldream! While we have a high literacy rate and that we have talented and skilled human resources, we do not have that much capacity to keep them by giving them attractive salary. We are losing our best people to bigger countries who can afford to give them a fat paycheck. We can't stop our fellow Filipinos from leaving the Philippines as they have all the right to choose the kind of life they want to live. We also do not have the financial resources for the best capital investments. Thus, we depend on the surpluses of other countries. We also depend on capital investments donated by other countries. It is sad that while we produce the best human resources, other countries get more from their skills and talents than we do.

how much could be the necessary amount of money for our country to start shifting towards developing their own signature state of the art tech. how many billions of money does it take to have the financial resources to start a capital investment, why do we wait for other countries to exploit the ingenuity of our own people, how long shall we be waiting for our country to realize that we are the one making other countries to be rich while our own country is left behind in her poverty..how many billions of money to be owed and borrowed to fill the pockets, wallets and bank accounts of these crocodiles safely devouring the resources intended for this endeavors...

Depending on other countries' trash, is not good. For example, some gadgets or vehicles in Japan are good for a certain time. When that time is reached, they have to be disposed. Filipinos would collect and recycle their trash and it has an adverse effect on the environment. I will not elaborate on that as it has something to do with engines. Depending on other countries' technology is normal but we must prioritize our own. There are many briliant Filipino inventors but government does not support them. So these briliant inventors sell their inventions to other countries.

i was really dismayed for my country, she doesn't deserve this. our country deserve more than to be a third world country, she doesn't deserve being left behind by his own people working somewhere else to earn enough for their love ones

You asking for those intellectuals? I tell you, those who are globally competitive Filipinos are not in our country anymore. Their intellects best serves the alien nation. Our government lacks support for those people. I should say, this government is only minding what the people can do for them and not what they can do for the people. Let's mirror ourselves with Korea. Before, they are a very poor nation, but now, they surpass our country, its because the people and their government works hand in hand to established a country that is full of aspirations and patriotism. Now they have their owned brand of technologies like Samsung while Philippines is well known for pick-pockets. Its so embarrassing. Take a look at our airports, instead of having posters like "Mabuhay! Welcome to Philippines!" they have a huge notice saying "BEWARE OF PICK-POCKETS". I don't condemn our country, but those crap sitting out there are the ones to be blame.

The leaders are only up-to living their life in comfort. They don't even care how the small and simple individual live their life. Instead of having to uplift the peoples living they rather have pity on them. Then they raise a feeding program, for what? About a day of palatable food and then after back to the usual life again. This is because our leaders are doing nothing to solve this unemployment rate of our country. Before there are lots of investors who are willing to shed capital to our country but they're all gone now because of those corrupts. Where is the president's promise of having a 1 million job a year? If this problem will be solve, then after we can established our own brand like the other. It's just so sad that instead of being in the list of rich countries, we are being put to the list of the most corrupt. And our leaders are just laughing at it.

the big issue that we always cried out are the same, good leaders are the needs of the time and of our country, japan is so devastated by the recent war, but after that they emerge still one of the rich country, why and how it is because they have good leaders that have a nationalistic mind and heart who are willing to serve the cause of their country more than their own interest..here self interest first before the country

i think that is the big problem in our country, the lack of a good leader that will step away in the circle of this usual politics, and lead the country and the people toward the real and lasting solutions for the progress and development of our beloved country, the lack of this leadership makes our country with no goal and direction, because the people sitting there has no vision for the good of our country and the people...
