Why is that hospital bathrooms are always white?

I visited the hospital this morning and I had to go to the bathroom. The bathroom tiles were white. In my opinion, the white plain tiles gives you an air of austerity. Another colour would light up one's mood when one visits the hospital. Why is that hospital bathrooms are always white?

Yes, we need to use better interior designers for our public structures.

Interesting; I've never noticed this before! I suppose it's partly like people have said; it's so that you can tell that it's not dirty, and so that the cleaners can identify where the dirt is. However, to be honest, most hospital toilets I've been to haven't been that clean! I think that white is a bit too 'clinical' really. I know in a hospital clinical is kind of what you're after, but a warmer colour makes you feel a bit more relaxed and not so nervous! Another reason why they're always white and always look the same is probably due to cost. Colourful, more snazzy toilets, sinks and tiles would probably be more expensive, and the hospitals probably usually have one central supplier company where they buy these kinds of things in bulk. Maybe somewhere that specialises in bathroom furniture for hospitals. Buying different furniture from elsewhere would probably be too costly for hospitals, which are always on a tight budget (at least they are in the UK), and would probably also break some kind of public sector partnership agreement.

May be because they just want to differenciate between a dirt and clean , i mean when the floor is white in colour , they will wash everything and try to make it broght white so that can have a cleanly feeling for the patients and people working there , when it of someother colour people might not clean it properly and that will make them look dirty , i dont know this is just my idea not the real fact .And yes when we wash the white tile it really makes a bad smell , people cant stay there for sometime..

I guess for sanitary reasons only... They want it to be clean so that they can see what is visible.. I guess it would be for cleanliness purposes.

To me white symbolizes being very clean and sterile, especially at a hospital, it needs to be, and most of the nurses all wear white, to me that means they look clean and crisp and professional.

I think they always choose to have white color in any of the bathroom in the Hospital so that it is very easy to sanitation purpose and would be easy to recognize if the place has been clean or wiped out with those cleaners....

I think white stands for the clean environment. Besides, it will calm you. It's very peaceful and I think it's good for the patients. I love China

I think they feel its more of a sanitory color..if they want you to feel better it should be more of a pastel color..like light pink, blue or green..

True what you say,but white represents cleanliness and hygiene,so you can see why the white bathroom suites are used,it would seem pretty funny if we went into a hospital yto find that they had pink or green baths, and lol the latest fashion trends dictate that all bathrooms should be white now,so lol theyt are keeping up to date with the fashion.

I guess that it has something more to do with hygiene than with fashion.

I think the whiteness is to give an impression of sterility and cleanliness. It is easy to see dirt, blood and other stains on white, therefore easy to clean it up. I guess if they chose different colours it wouldn't please everyone - so sticking with white is probably a safe option.

Due to hygienic reasons, I have to agree here that white is the best option.

Probably so that you can tell it is clean. You could tell easier if anything was dirty if the surface is white rather than another color or pattern. Also with the mood thing, I think that white is a very neutral color and people associate different colors with different things. A color that may lighten one person's mood may create a negative feeling for another. In example: yellow is known to create a happy mood, but if you are feeling sick, the yellow color could make you feel worse. Another example, blue is known to be calming, but it can also make you feel "blue" or depressed.

I think it's because they look cleaner. The ones around here are green or blue taht's so they'll look modern I guess.

Nurse - Nurses always dress in white.
I think it must be for the same reason doctors and nurses dress in white: to show that the place and the people who work there are clean: dirt and filth are easier to detect on white.

I myself believe it is white so that they can see when they drop something and where it is. with darker color floors it is harder to find things. Also they can see if fluids are blood, urine or something else.

Because the dirt is visible clearly on white surface so that it can be cleaned immediately.

i guess to make it look clean and sterile and the likes...just like the uniform of the nurses and the likes..since when we think of hospital it means that the place must be clean and conducive for healing or recovering and yes white color maybe can enhanced it...but personally i like white tiles in the bathroom so that i will know when to clean it and can easily spot some dirt compared to colored ones..

hi ronaldinu they are white as it costs less than colored tiles, as hospitals are always saying they lack funds. besides white is easier to clean and looks more professional too. after all its a hospital not the Waldorf Astoria. Most hospital rooms are a shade of p;ale green or blue thats to help; patients get calmer inside. some have one wall flowered which is really nice. childrens wards are sometimes very cheery.

Around here, they are not usually white. The hospitals like a little bit more decoration than that, I guess.
