Hot-button issue for our state

I believe that the hot-button issue in the upcoming elections for my state will be whether or not to have a state lottery. There are many pros and cons on this issue. In the past I have not been so favorable about a state lottery, but with the loss of so many jobs in recent years I now can see where it would be a good move. People need work to live happy and fulfilled lives. If you take that away from them they often feel there is not much left. Do you agree or disagree? Are you pro state lotteries or anti?

hmmm if your profile is correct you live in Ohio? I'm in Ohio and have not heard of any lottery issue on the ballot. I know we have the issue with casino gambling. That I plan on voting against because the proposed law was written to allow the casinos to have zero taxes.

Well the casinos would not be taxed like a normal business, in Neveda a state that I use to live in the casinos were taxed and the state was able to create the Gaming Comission to oversee the casinos. The tax money from the casinos also created so much revenue for the state it funded schools and also allowed Neveda to have zero state income tax. If the casinos are not taxed the state will lose considerable tax funds that would be generated. If the law was written that the casinos would be taxed than I would gladly vote for the casinos. Until the proposal is rewritten I will have no choice but to vote no.

I agree with you Zephyr, I think I will be changing my vote to no as well. I mean, we do need the jobs here in Ohio, but we also need that tax revenue. I didn't know before now that they were not going to be taxed, its my own dumb fault for not reading into the issue entirely. I'm actually torn on this issue now, I mean, having a casino here would bring jobs, and revenue to surrounding businesses, but at the same time we need the revenue that taxes on the casino would bring. Plus, if it's voted down this time, there's no telling when we would get another chance at getting one, whether the revamp the issue or not. Hmm...

I understand your point but, without taxing them would just be insane.

state lotteries are okay for people who want to participate in them, I don't because I don't buy into all the hype. I have very little money to play with and I don't want to waste it on lotteries but I think it is a personal choice.

depends on what you mean by gambler, a gambler can have a sickness and gamble away his or her life savings, car and house, or somebody that plays two dollars a week on a lottery, very different, most people actually buy a two dollar lottery ticket, or enter sweepstakes contests, some take a chance on the stock market, some gamble for dog fights, boxing, horse races, some just enter a contest like so you think you can dance or american idol that is a a form of gambling you are not gambling your money but you are your time talent etc just to see if you can win the big prize.

What it comes down to, winterose, is that it takes a certain type of personality to become a person that is a gambler, and I have never had that personality, but I don't knock others who gamble responsibly.

I am against pro state lotteries because you encourage people to bet money especially when there is a huge sum to be won. You will find people who do not have a sense of priority and sacrifice essential items such as food in order to buy lottery tickets.

I am definitely against because my husband plays it too much, taking money out of our pocket for things we need and because he works for the school system, he already told me that the money that the school are suppose to get from this, is not as much as they lead you to believe..

Gambling is a bad habit no matter which way you look at it, carmelanirel. I've seen first-hand the damage it can cause to those who become addicted.

Yes, I agree, I only mentioned some of what I am going through with this. Plus I find it weird that my husband knowing the lie about how little it really helps the schools and yet he still plays it..

I'm from a state that has had a state lottery for quite some time, and derives considerable income from it. A large chunk of that income is distributed to communities for community development black grants. My city has used those CDBGs for developing affordable housing, building capacity, replacing infrastructure (like traffic lights) - as well as some fairly silly things. A healthy percentage of that money also goes to fund programs like Gamblers Anonymous. Statistics show that the people who are most likely to play the lottery are those who in the lower income ranges. There's a reason that there are so many 'unemployed cab driver wins $1 million' headlines - it's not a matter of a one in a million lucky draws. It's that those people are the overwhelming majority of of people playing the lottery. When you look at it that way, the lottery is a way of funding community projects through contributions from those with the least income. That said, I don't have a problem with a state lottery. I believe I feel differently about allowing casinos - and our city has rejected propositions to site off-track betting and casino gambling, even though both of those would bring jobs to the city.

You didn't give your reasons for not supporting gambling casinos, chameleons.

Umm, we already have a state lottery, worldwise. I think you are thinking of the Casino issue. I think it would be a wonderful idea. People who want to gamble are going to gamble anyway, why not have some of that money stay here instead of up I-74 to the Argosy? Like you said yourself, it will bring jobs and revenue to the state that it needs so badly. I am for it, because otherwise we are losing out on tax money that could be staying right here in Ohio.

You are right, drknlvly, and I stand corrected. I can't help thinking that if people had access to jobs it just might positively impact our too-high crime rate also.
