Hi everyone! I am so not good in memorizing street names. That's why I don't get to travel by public transportations alone. Or I need someone to drive me to where I have to go. Even before when I was still studying I only knew one route from our house to school. I know the main road and familiarize myself with the landmarks where I must get off but that's just it. If the public transportation decided to cut trip then I will be lost.I don't have any alternative route cause I don't know really know a lot of places. I also have a bad habit of just sitting while inside the car. I look around while traveling but I don't actually care to remember the route. I am not an outgoing person so I feel lazy remembering street names. How about you guys? Are you observant with the route while you travel? Do you always remember the street names of places you have been and can choose to take alternative routes?

I usually take a good quality travel guide book with me when I travel. It has maps in for the major cities and I can always buy a map when I visit a small town. I look at where my accommodation and the center of the city are on my map. I build up a mental picture of the roads and directions. I look at the street names and this helps me find my way around. I had difficulty in Bulgaria because their language is Cyrillic. I had English street names in my guide book and Cyrillic on the streets or no names at all. I got hopelessly lost and had much confusion with the language barrier. Next door in Romania I got on fine because they have the same alphabet I have in my native tongue. In Parnu in Estonia many streets were not marked and so I had a challenging time trying to find my accommodation.

Hey bringing a travel book with you is a good idea. I guess that would be the best not to get lost. I notice you have been traveling a lot fellow lotter. Have you been into some parts of Asia?

Hi! My friends helped me finding a shortcut before. We use to walk a lot after school but that was a long time ago and I have forgotten those shortcuts we use to take. But it was a fun experience hunting for alternative routes hehe Thanks for sharing!

Hi! I love traveling but I never traveled alone. I know that I am poor in geography and map-reading so I would eventually get lost anyway. My companion is my guide. I tend to remember landmarks better than street names, though. If there is a situation and I need to really get out alone, I bring my notepad and scribble some directions, landmarks or street names so that I won't get lost. Happy traveling!

Hey same here fellow lotter. I'm also good in remembering landmarks more than streets names. And if there is a need to go out alone. I try hard to remember the route so I won't get lost next time. Ciao!

Hello iskayz! I love traveling! It is really one of the things I enjoy best. My one problem is that I am not good at memorizing street names. What I normally do is to get acquainted with the landmarks. I find that more effective rather than memorizing all those street names. I remember going to Hong Kong several years ago for the first time. I tried memorizing the street names, but I failed. What I did was to familiarize myself with the landmarks. From then on, everytime I go to Hong Kong, I no longer have a hard time going around Hong Kong. Same thing is true when I visit Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. I think the worst experience was with Japan. One time I went there and got acquainted with some landmarks, when I went back about a year and a half after, I couldn't see the landmarks I memorized earlier. There were new structures that practically hid the landmarks I have acquainted myself with. Hahaha!

I try to know how to get around wherever I am. But it takes more than one trip to familiarize myself with my surroundings. In my home city, I know a lot of the area even the small streets and alternative routes. But here in Riyadh where I live now, because I can't drive here, I'm so lazy to remember my way around. I know how to get to my school or the mall, but to go to other places ... um ... no LOL.

Well I bet in no time you'll know you're way around in Riyadh soon. You just have to get used to your new surroundings. Keep posting!

When i am travelling i am trying my best to familiarize the place or the names of place. But after a few minutes i forget it, so i only try to find a landmark that easy to remember. Coz sometimes i get distracted and my mind is flying. Happy posting.
