I read this news in today's newspaper that top UK's Schools scrap, slash the practice of homework saying its a waste of time and does not help in education at all.One of the Principals of a top School said"If you ask most heads what most detentions are for, they will tell you for non-completion of home-work." Personally, I, being an ex-teacher, also beleive in this theory. Children do homework(or their parents make themdo) to save themselves from detention and has no productive use. It causes enormous amount of home conflict. What are your opinions about this? Do you think homework help children on their education front? Please share your views with mylot readers. Thanks

I don't think it's a waste of time. It helps the student review the lesson they learned in class. It does in fact help in education. If they didn't have homework, they wouldn't remember what they learned in class. Bringing home assignments allows them to get more education at home other than in school.

Indeed, I agree. Homework should not be abolished altogether.

Homeworks should be given in moderation, this way children can reinforce the lessons they learnt without any cribbing. Thanks for your response. Happy mylotting!

I think that homework is beneficial most of the time. However, there are cases when it seems like homework is pointless and a waste of time - I'm in high school and sometimes I still get stupid assignments like crossword puzzles and other "busy work". Usually though, homework helps me review and understand the content better.

I think homework is good when it comes down to reviewing a subject. I don't think it should be given all the time. One thing i will say though, is that the amount of homework schools send their children home with is ridiculous. Some kids have so much homework they can't go out and play or have any sort of leisure time. They can if the want to but they wouldn't be able to get all that homework done and retain information. Schools need to stop over loading kids. They put too much of a work load on them and all it does is cause stress to the student. Work should be done at school, that's why it's there. I think homework should stay simply to review and be minimal.

Absolutely MissGia, most of the teachers shrug their responsibility and tend to load kids with homework and leave everything on parents to do it for their kids. What teachers should be doing in school for their students, parents have to do it to keep their kids upto the mark. Happy mylotting.

I think that excessive homework is a waste of time. Most of the time my 3rd grader only has homework if he did not get it finished in class. He is enjoying school more this year than any other year and seems to be learning better than previous years when he had homework every night of the week. Too much homework just stresses kids out and they do not learn well if they are stressed.

I agree with you on this point that excessive homework is very strssful for kids and consequently they start losing interest. It should be slashed so that they can reinforce their lessons as well as enjoy doing the same. Thanks for your response lilybug.

For me it's not that homework is a waste of time for me it is better that the homework be modified so that instead of it being a burden it should be something that should develop thinking at the same time fun for students. Also for me homework should be something like a practice so that the lesson will really be put into memory by the student.

I agree with you that homeworks should be in moderation so that students do it easily in less time and can pursue their other activities. This way they can retain the lessons they studied in school. Happy mylotting!

I think homework can be useful. As long as the child is not overwhelmed with assignments. Homework encouragees the child to think for his or her self, to remember and apply what was taught, and also the responsibility of completing the assignment. I think homework should not be given every day, but given in moderation, it is a good thing.

I think homeowrk is nice for a child every now and then to keep their minds fresh and give them something to do alot of times to keep them focussed and out of trouble. I do not think they should have it every day though.

Al children should get homework to do and if they do not get it to do the parent shoudl set sme for them. I beleive in this because homework reinforces what was taught. It makes the child practice and allows the parent to take an active part in it too. Whenever my child gets homework she works it at it and i check it. If she doesnt understand something I do the research from my library of many books at home and help her. It also allows me to re-learn something I have forgotten. children have a tendency to forget what is taught during the day, the homework allows then to read over, look at previous examples in order to accomplish the task. I go to school and I get "homework" too although we call it assignments. I do it because i want to succed in the course and to be able to intelligently discuss any topic taught. I teach my child the smae thing too. you see the teacher has already learnt what he/she needs to know. therefore doing homework is still apart of the learning process and should be heartily encouraged. I do give my child assignments on the weekend if she has no homework and it has improved her ability alot. I think all parents should encourage the doing of homework.

Undoubtedly Sharon, I appreciate your interest in your child's studies. If all the parents take so much interest in their kids' studies then there is no reason that the kid will be left behind in any field. I think there are busy parents who crib when they have to make kids do their homework with the result kids also dislike doing it. But yes, one thing is there for sure, it should be in moderation so that both parents and kids enjoy doing .God Bless!

I don't think that it is a total waste of time. It is when it is excessive that is when i think it is a waste of time. Doing normal exercises, and practicing things in which they learn is good habits. I think it helps develop skills. Homework isn't only about exercises, and problems, it is also about organization. So I think that homework has its advantages.

Unless and until students don't take it as a burden, homework is good for them and yes, it makes them organized and keeps them occupied while at home.

No, homework is not a waste of time. It reinforces the lessons they learn in class, teaches them responsibility, self- discipline, how to work independently, meet deadlines and to take initiative. I think that parents are too quick to coddle their children and complain for them about homework, when in reality parents should be requiring them to complete their homework each day. It prepares them for real life, when they will sometimes be required to do things they don't want to do, don't feel like doing, that may take away from time for fun. Letting children off the hook with homework send the wrong message- that if you don't want to do something just whine and complain a lot and you get out of it. That is not the way the world works. Plus, education these days is seriously lacking, so if anything, we should raise the expectations for students as far as their education is concerned. That said, I don't think excessive amounts of homework is a good thing. Any more than an hour a day is probably a bit too much.

Surely homework is not a waste of time if its given less which a kid can easily do and enjoy at the same time. In this competitive world kids should be given homework so that they get into the habit of working hard right from the beginning. But I've seen in most of the schools, kids are loaded with homework with the result that both kids and parents also start cribbing. So everything is good in moderation. Isn't it?

A small amount of homework never hurt anybody. The large mass of homework that I see some kids bring home is not needed. Yes, if a child needs to practice their school work then they should. It is not given out just so kids have something to do. It is given out in order for them to practice their work and try to understand it. If your child really does not understand what they are doing, then maybe doing some homework might help them. My brother use to be like this. He hated to do homework and my parents would fight him about it. They would make him sit down and do it and then look over it. If he got a problem wrong they would help him understand how to do it. Now he does his homework without a problem and if he has questions he either asks our parents or askes help from a teacher.

So its good that your brother has been benefitted from doing his homework. I think if not totally scrapped , it should be slashed so that kids enjoy doing it and can review whatever they studied in school. Students who are loaded with homework just avoid doing it with the result they get detention in school. Good Luck and thanks for your response.

It's normal for the students to have homeworks. It helps them to be more informative and have a self-discipline in studying for thier lessons. IT helps them to be more responsible and serious in study. So it's not waste of time. It's a training for them to get ready to face the competitive world.

Good Post, comfort55. When I was in school I actually experienced more consternation at home than at school-which was tremendous as well. My parents ridiculed me constantly. When my son went to school I sat and really helped him with his homework and even did it for him, so he could play and be a child. I summarized for him so he could learn some. But when kid is under pressure at school and then comes home to do 5-6 hours or more of schoolwork and is so stressed out I don't see how that can be part of a valuable education. And this homework was when he was in 6th grade. There were times when he got home, rested for about an hour and his homework lasted til 11:00 PM. Then I kept him home the next day because there wasn't enough sleep time. I like your question very much. You are a thinking teacher, which sadly there aren't enough good teachers. Incidently, my son is now 37 years old and very successful in the banking credit card industry with a very well-known company. So my actions when he was 12 years old-in doing his homework for him did nothing for him, except in summarizing, which was just as good. And I learned things from the homework.

Welcome to mylot MalloryDavis. I agree with you that excess homework is stressful for kids and moreover it loses its educative value. Homework should not be totally scrapped out but should be given in moderation so that kids finish it off on time and can pursue other activities. This way they enjoy their studies and do not take it as a burden on them.LOL!

i don't consider it as a total waste of time but in case it helps students to be prepared and ready to take challenges and grooms them. i loved to do my homework and now when i am in the university i love the feeling of having a deadline to complete my assignment and i do it because of the childhood habit . so for me it is a good practice

I appreciate your outlook on homework. It has many advantages no doubt but only thing I want to stress is that it should not be loaded. Kids should not take it as a burden.

I have to say for the most part I do think it causes a lot of conflict as after school there isnt alot of hours to work in and you have people coming home from work, sports or whatever. There is supper to make, sit down time to eat among other things. I also run into the problem of the kids done understand their homework and some I do and some I dont. I help with what I know and even then if it is, say math, I get that isnt how the teacher does it and we are suppose to do it and show the steps the way SHE does it. I cant tell you how peeved I can get by the end of the night. Although it was way worse when I had all 7 in school!

for me it is not a waste of time, it actually helps students to be more productive in school and the parents will be forced to teach their child if ever they don't understand their homework.,so it would be an advantage.

Well, I would feel better if I see my child doing homework than playing computer games all the time. I think homework is good actually, it's like helping the child to remember what was taught in class today. Learning the concepts and applying them! If the children don't get homework, they won't pay attention in class, because they know they're not going to apply this knowledge anywhere. But I don't think doing too much homework is good either. It's probably gonna stress out the child.

I guess people has different opinions. Homework is just a form of practice of what you have learn in school. Sometimes a child has to pay attention in school in order to understand what the teacher has taught them today. After that the teacher gives homework and thus they recap what is being learnt. If the child doesnt not know anything about it, probably he/she wasnt paying attention.
